I don’t think I’ve come across a manga that is as strangely sweet and delightful as Monster and the Beast. I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting into. The thought of a man falling in love with a literal monstrous being seemed so outrageous, but once I got into it I loved every moment of it. This is what I get for judging a book by it’s cover.
The story is about a dashing middle-aged (and quite promiscuous) gentleman named Liam and his monster companion, Cavo. Cavo meets Liam in the woods and, after saving Liam from a group of men intent on harming him, Cavo decides to help Liam find his way back to civilization. Along the way these two become closer and closer, filling each page with adorable, cute, and fun interactions. Cavo is rather shy when it comes to affection, but the ever persistent Liam enjoys pushing his new friend into touchy situations, and will very often offer his body up for sex (to which Cavo refuses). The story eventually takes a turn and reveals that there are some secrets Liam has been hiding, but we’ll avoid getting into that to save us on the spoilers.
As you progress through the story you find yourself rooting for these two strange companions (or at least I did). They work oddly well together and you simply want nothing more than for the two of them to find love and live happily ever after. The fluffy feels made my heart explode, but there’s also plenty of drama to keep you on your toes. Aside from that, the artstyle is superb; I would stare at the panels for ages before moving on just so I could admire Liam’s beautiful face or Cavo’s gorgeous long hair.
Overall, I haven’t read a manga that has given me emotions like this in a very, very long time. I 100% recommend giving it a shot (and let me know how you like it!)
