Novel: Seven

Author: Adrienne Wilder

Genres: SF, Paranormal, Fantasy, Mystery, Romance

Released: 2013

Part of Book Series: The Others Project #1

Summary: A past that won’t let go…

After losing his job, Chase Sarim finds himself living in a shit hole apartment. His new neighbor calls himself Seven, wears aluminium hats and carries around a ceramic rooster. He also seems to know what Chase is going to do or say before it happens, and talks about people named Nine, Three, and Four.

Chase knows better than to get involved with someone like that.
But some men are just too hot to resist.

A future of fear…

Seven has been running for his life ever since he escaped Sub-Floor. In order to elude those hunting him he can never have a home, never have friends. And love? It’s nothing but a weakness that can be used against him.
Hiding had become a way of life. Until Chase.

Greed, power, and corruption…

Dr. David Stone knows Seven has a secret. Why else would his colleague, Dr. Radcliff, help Seven escape Sub-Floor? It wasn’t the loss of a defective precog that bothered Stone, it was the fact Radcliff was willing to die to keep Stone from knowing why he did it. Or better yet, how.

Two men, one love, brought together by a series of impossible circumstances and destined by fate for an entangled future.

But maybe fate has nothing to do with it.

Post’s Author Opinion:
Note: This is a personal opinion, it does not reflect YaoiOtaku’s official position towards the novel.

A while ago I read the first part of the synopsis on this novel, the first two sentences or so, then I looked at the cover and I thought, nah, I don’t want to read this, I don’t think I’d like it. Well, joke’s on me, because I decided to give it a shot and I did like it. I think this is also one of my first SciFi novels, at least I can’t recall reading another, so this whole thing was pretty new to me. And it was great. Adrienne Wilder once again managed to build a new world, create great characters, and pull me right in the middle of it. I don’t know how she does it. However, this is my least favourite novel from Adrienne Wilder.

I liked Seven and Chase very much. At first there was something unique to Seven, then he became more normal, but not dull. With all his abilities, he was surprisingly regular which was nice for some reason. Chase was a great character. With all that was happening around him, he did a very good job at everything. I have mixed feelings about them, though. It could be argued that their relationship, their feelings, weren’t completely genuine, but I say they were. They felt real to me, there was chemistry between them, they obviously cared for each other, and they just fit so well together.

My favourite couple in the book, though, was Three and Four and I would have liked to read more about them. Their relationship seems to be so complicated, I want to know how it started (although there is one thing I do not like about it), and I want to know what’s next for them. Three is almost obsessive over Four and Four is such a force grounding Three. I really, really liked them.

I felt for Twenty Three too, his story saddened me and I would have liked for something good to happen for him, something very good. I would have liked some sort of conclusion to all of them, but there was none. I feel like there were more books planned for this series, but judging by the ratings on the following books (Seven has over 1000 ratings, and Thirteen only around 200) I suspect the sequel didn’t do as well and the series might have been dropped. If that’s the case, I hope the decision is overturned and we get those sequels. Truth is I am not even that interested in reading about Thirteen. I am probably going to, but I really would have liked to get Three and Four, and/or Twenty Three. Maybe they are mentioned in the sequel.

Going back to Seven, the plot was interesting. Not new, but Adrienne Wilder managed to make it captivating. Although at times predictable, there were a few twists and turns that took me by surprise. I still have some questions regarding Nine and why he did everything the way he did, but I don’t think I’ll get any answers, so I’ll leave those aside.

The more I think about what I read, the more flaws I can find, so I’m going to stop here. The plot makes sense, there is obviously a lot of planning it all out, and the characters are relatable and likeable. Paired with Adrienne Wilder’s writing, this is a good read.
