Before any writing you need to know basic alphabet or structure of language you are try to learn. Korean(한글han-gul) has 14 consonants(자음ja-eum) and 10 vowels(모음mo-eum). First, let us know what 14 consonants are. ㄱ(기역gi-yeog) ㄴ(니은 ni-eun) ㄷ(디귿 di-geud) ㄹ(리을 li-eul) ㅁ(미음 mi-eum) ㅂ(비읍 bi-eub) ㅅ(시옷 si-od) end written sound is S but coming out sound is D. ㅇ(이응 i-eung) ㅈ(지읒 ji-eud) end written sound is J but coming out sound is D ㅊ(치읓 chi-eud) end written sound is CH but coming out sound is D. ㅋ(키읔 ki-eug) end written sound is K but coming out sound is G. ㅌ(티읕 ti-eud) end written sound is T but coming out sound is D. ㅍ(피읖 pi-eub) end written sound is P but coming out sound is B. ㅎ(히잏 hi-eud) end written sound is H but coming out sound is D. With this there are double up one… for sound just ad Ssang in front. ㄲ(쌍기역 Ssang-gi-yeog) ㄸ(쌍디귿 Ssang-di-geud) ㅃ(쌍비읍 Ssang-bi-eub) ㅆ(쌍시옷 Ssang-si-od) ㅉ(쌍지읒 Ssang-ji-eud) And there is some consonants go together. This is most used in under. This one I will give you few examples. ㄳ – 삯(Saks) – wages ㄵ – 앉아(Anja) – Sit down ㄶ – 많이(Manhi) – a lot ㄻ – 닮았다 (Dalmassda) – looks like it ㄾ – 핥다(Haltda) - lick ㅄ – 밥값 (Babgabs) – meal price or money for meal But, same as English with out vowels consonants doesn’t make any words. So now let learn about 10 vowels. ㅏ(a) ㅑ(ya) ㅓ(eo) ㅕ(yeo) ㅗ(o) ㅛ(yo) ㅜ(woo / u) ㅠ(yoo / yu) ㅡ(eu) ㅣ(i) This vowels also mix together to work. ㅐ(ae) ㅒ(yae) ㅔ(e) ㅖ(ye) ㅘ(wa) ㅙ(wae) ㅚ(oe) ㅝ(wo) ㅞ(we) ㅟ(wi) ㅢ(ui) These are the most basic you need to know before structuring into word... Some people said Korean is most scientific language in the world. The building structure of Korean isn’t easy, but long as you know how to put consonants and vowels together it will be easy to put together. And the sound of the word will not change much at all... So what you write is what you get. So let built up some word. First, let use first consonant and vowel together. 가(ga) – Go! Even just one consonant and one vowel together made into the word. There are many other... Like 나(na) – I or Me, 다(da) – Everything, 라(la) – sound La, 마(ma) – it’s some kind of root veggie, 바(ba) – Bar, 사(sa) – Four, 아(a) – Ah, 자(ja) – Ruler, Go to sleep! 차(cha) – Car, 파(pa) – Dig or sound Fa, 하(ha) – laugh sound Ha Like this... even one work also could have many meaning. Also, you could put other consonant under this single word. 각(gak) – angle or each I will stop here for today. YO has been having several problems in the last 2 weeks, first the login/refreshing problem, then the current slow loading and the inability to upload images (be it as signature, avatars, in album, in groups). As you could see, we had to remove the shoutbox (chat) and other PHP applications which were causing an even heavier loading. We worked on fixing those issues, but we came to the conclusion that we have to move to another server. We already bought a new server (for the first month) and now we are working on configuring and securing it (thanks to Josh) so we can move the site there. Hopefully the next week we'll manage to complete the transfer. UPDATE: Because we want to secure the new server very well (due to the previous attacks we had) and set up a monitoring for us to analyze the logs so we can collect detailed information in case of a possible future attack attempt, the migration to the new server will take longer than we anticipated. There are zillion things to do. Until now everything went smoothly and a big part of the server is already secured. I know it's annoying, the way the forum is working now, but better to do the things good than rush them and face problems later on. Anyway, if everything goes well, we'll finish the migration until the end of the month. After migration we'll add the shoutbox (chat) again and other PHP applications that were removed due to the slow loading and also we'll launch the new manga reader on which we've been working for 3 months already. 1. It is completely normal for students to call there teacher "(first name) Teacher." Not Mr. Gwynne, or anything else, just "Ben Teacher." I am a teacher, therefore they refer to me as one as a sign of respect for authority. They call the Korean teachers "Native Teacher." Furthermore, even my coworkers call the Principal…."Principal" and the Vice Principal…"Vice Principal." This carries on at places even like the GYM, a place which is pretty informal and friendly. People call the guy who works at my gym "trainer." 2. Drinking is NOT permitted in 99% of bowling alleys in Korea. I always assumed bowling and drinking went hand in hand, but not here. Here, it’s a "family atmosphere" so no drinking allowed. Some places have separate rooms that have vending machines with beer, but you can’t bring the beer down to the bowling alley. One place just opened up a few months ago that has a huge bar and is a traditional bowling alley like they have back in the US, however the place is a mob scene at night now. I hope they open more… 3. The word "perm" can be used as a verb in Korea. "I was late for class because I was perming my hair." 4. Bare feet are "offensive" to some elderly people. For this reason, most people wear socks with sandals if they are walking around with them outside. If you were to go to a restaurant with sockless sandals, you would be disgracing the place to no end (yourself as well). 5. After meals when using a toothpick in Korea, the correct method is to use one hand to cover your mouth, and the other one has the toothpick in it. 6. Usually, one person (customarily it’s the oldest) pays for drinks/dinner when you go out with your coworkers. Splitting the bill doesn’t happen much. I went out with my coworkers for drinks one night, we drank a lot and ordered some food, the Vice Principal footed the bill even though he didn’t drink and barely ate. No one flinched when the bill came, he paid for it as they expected him too. 6a) Another time at a bar, the head teacher (the oldest person with us this time) tried paying for the bill even though I was burying beer after beer. I hopped in paid half since I make more than them and was being a "tank" as they called me. It was outrageous to me that she was trying to pay for it even though half the bill was mine. 7. There are 4 seasons in Korea, and they pride themselves on it. All the students know it and write about it quite frequently. To be fair there is a real spring, summer, fall, and winter, unlike in NY and other places where sometimes an entire season gets skipped over. 8. There is no daylight savings time in Korea. 9. Things can be purchased and ordered without using a credit card. It’s quite common that places over the phone will place your offer and just expect you to wire them the money. What a sense of honor. 10. At many restaurants, the bill is placed on your menu right after you order. If you ask for something else, they just write it onto the bill. You also pay for the bill by bringing the receipt to the front of the restaurant, you don’t pay the waiter and wait for change.
