707
Ren was so, so dead. He ran around his apartment, looking for various things like his watch, his phone and the keys of his most prized possession, his ducati 848. "I'm so fired." He grumbled to himself, finding everything he needed as he exited his room and took the stairs, three at a time. Then he was outside, swinging his legs on his bike and speeding towards the center of the city. He arrived just in time to see the coffee shop manager park his car. He opened the front doors and his supervisor glared at him. "Ren, you're late. Again!" The woman, handling the cash register stated in exasperation. "Sorry Mina," He amended, going behind the counter and taking his apron. "Fell asleep last night." "Ren," The manager started as he entered the joint. "Have you done that research you were saying?" "Yes, boss.." He replied, taking some black coffee beans from the back. "I've emailed it to you last night." The manager only replied with a grunt and a hearty pat on his back. carvinusher
"So, here we go! Today is my first day of work ".Zaide said to himself as he ran down the stairs. He was so excited because he wanted to work on a Coffee Shop. He also dreamed to own and manage a Coffee Shop just like her mother dreamed of but never came into fulfillment. So he decided to himself that as soon as he mastered how to run a Coffee Shop and have enough Financial resources, he's going to build one". Zaide hurried down the streets. The Coffee Shop was a few blocks ahead from his apartment. As he entered the Shop, he heard the woman saying " Ren! You're late again." and he noticed the manager had arrived also. The manager smiled at him and turned his back to talk to the Barista. Then a few minutes later, the manager called the attention of the workers saying "Listen up guys, we have a new Barista here and from now on he's going to work here ". and walked towards Zaide. "His name is Zaide and he's the son of my friend Carmen". as the manager continued to introduce him to his co-workers. " Everyone here seems to be nice", murmured Zaide to himself. As he looked around, he caught someone glaring at him from behind the counter.
707
Ren heard their boss say that there was a new barista. He glared. It was either the guy was good or they were gonna assign him to Ren. For training. He got his answer when their manager looked at him. "Hey, Ren why don't you come here and introduce yourself to your new underling." Ren smiled. He liked the sound of that. "Ren Illian," He stated, extending his hand. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance."
carvinusher
Zaide heard the manager calling the guy behind the counter. And to his surprise, that guy was assigned to tutor him. He doesn't like the idea of the manager but there's nothing he can do. He need to obey the rules. "Ren Illian". said the barista as the guy extended out his hand. "Eh, Zaide.. I'm Zaide Jovan. Err,nice to meet you. ", he replied as he reached out for the hand of Ren. "I have a bad feeling about this. I hope this works out", Zaide thought and smiled back to Ren. 707
Ren nodded in agreement. It wasn't that he didn't like Zaide, it was just that he was not keen on telling other people how he made his coffee blends. When he was still in training, his superior had told him that he was a savant in the matter of coffee blending and preparation. He did not know what that meant but he still took it as the compliment that it was. Ren, for his part, just liked coffee. He was fascinated on how many kinds there were and how many combinations and flavor one could create. Since he was a kid he had dreamed of having his own coffee shop, maybe make it also a wifi zone and maybe add some pastries on the side. He still had that dream and he was saving everything that he could to one day be able to invest in his dream. Since he was an orphan of sorts, he had been saving for a long time. Ren had enough for him to start his own business but he didn't want it to be small, so he was still saving for him to afford a bigger one. He looked at Zaide and nodded to himself. 'Here we go.' He thought as the first customer of the day arrived.
carvinusher
Later on, the first costumer arrived. Zaide headed towards the espresso coffee machine. He knows how to make a coffee beverages specially his favorite one, the cappuccino. He was thinking what would Ren teach him first. He looked around and saw Ren chatting with the costumer. "I guess I should do it myself". Zaide sighed.
707
Ren looked at Zaide and smiled even if a little bit. The guy had initiative. And initiative, Ren liked. "Check the espresso machine if it is clean." Ren stated as he leaned on a nearby counter just beside Zaide. "Remember to always French roast the coffee. If you're using coffee beans, grind it well using the burr grinder." He looked up as another customer entered the shop. "Cappuccino and two espresso." Ren called behind him as he went out the back to get some beans.
carvinusher
"Yes, Senior." answered Zaide. He hurriedly started the machine and prepared the order of the costumers. While preparing the beverages, he can't help glancing towards the direction where Ren was standing. There's something, maybe it's because of the reason that he's the one tutoring him or some reasons that he doesn't know himself either. "Well, anyway", Zaide said to himself. "The orders are ready, senior", Zaide called out.
707
Ren nodded as the other did what he told. "Specify your grinding with the filter that you are using.." He added as he retrieved a bag of Colombian coffee. "Before you use a coffee try rubbing the grinds between your fingers so that you'll be able to know them by size." He stated, putting the bag down the space below the counter. "Never ever reuse any coffee grounds. That's like taboo in coffee industry." He chuckled as he watched the progress of the other. carvinusher
"Time really flies", said Zaide while pressing the buttons of the coffee maker. "Yeah, It really does", Ren answered back. "Make sure you remember what i thought you", added Ren. "Yes senior! by the way", paused Zaide but before he can continue what he was saying, the manager called Ren to assist a costumer. Hours went by and it's nearly time to go home. As Zaide was going to approach Ren to say thank you, he didn't notice that his shoelace were untied. Then, in a moment... "BLAAGG!!" 707
Ren turned and that was all that he managed before something fell on top of him, toppling him to the floor. "Owww," He stated with a grimace, rubbing his aching head. Looking down, he saw that Zaide was almost sprawled on top of him, his shoes clearly saying that it was their fault. Ren glared. "Don't you even know how to tie your own shoes?" He asked, shoving the other off of him as he stood, taking his apron off and walking out the door without even a backward glance. carvinusher
"WAIT!!"..shouted Zaide as he stood. He was going to follow him but something held him back. He couldn't make another step forward. "Oh, well, I guess I have to apologize to him tomorrow",grumbled Zaide with a worried look. Later that night, he couldn't stop thinking what happened that afternoon. In an instant, without noticing his untied shoelaces, he accidentally fell above Ren, knocking both of them down on the floor. And he saw that face, covered with annoyance and anger, before walking without even turning back.
707
Ren parked his bike just outside the apartment complex. There were still some things that he should finish but he just couldn't stop and not stare at the waning sunset. "I know, I shouldn't have been so mean to him." He mumbled to himself. "At least he knows what to do when it comes to it." He smiled a bit to himself as he watched the colors of the horizon change.
carvinusher
The next day.. "I hope Ren is not angry on me", Zaide sighed before he entered the Coffee Shop. He hurriedly went to the counter and greeted the other staffs. "Where is he?", he grumbled while wearing his apron. Minutes later, Ren arrived. He was going to approach the guy but he cant make a step forward. He was going to call out the name of Ren, but he can't manage to utter a word. "What's happening to me?" mumbled Zaide in confusion. 707
Ren nodded to himself. "I should try and at least be civil towards him." He murmured to himself as he parked his bike in front of the shop. "Morning!" He greeted as Mina looked at him with disbelief. "You're on time today." She stated slowly, looking around her for the sign of the apocalypse. "Is it the end the world?" "Mina," Ren started in annoyance. "I can be early if I want." He sniffed indignantly, feigning annoyance. "For that I'm not making you your favorite lavender tea." "Oh come on Ren!" Mina whined. "Please, pretty please?" "Fine, fine.." Ren waved lazily. "Just stop annoying me." He went to the back to get some of the necessary beans for the day when he noticed that Zaide was fidgeting slightly and it was as if he wanted to talk to him. "What?" He asked, looking at the other with lazy eyes.
carvinusher
"What?" asked Ren with a lazy eyes. Zaide doesn't know what to do. He was feeling nervous because of the fear that his senior would be angry. It took several minutes of silence before Zaide replied. "Err, Senior... I just want to ..". but before he could continue what he was saying... "Ringg!! " the sound was from his cellphone.
707
Ren grumbled mostly to himself as he returned in the shop, noting that already a few customers were in. "Mocha cappuccino, black African brewed, mellow American brew, and a coco and milk shake." Mina stated lazily as she flipped through a sports magazine. Ren nodded as he started making the orders, making sure that the customers were very pleased at the result. He sighed and wondered what Zaide's problem was. carvinusher
"Uhmm, excuse me" Zaide ran towards the staff room and then answered the phone. "Zaide, my dear, how are you?", said the women on the line. "I'm doing good Mom, How about you?, Is there something wrong", he asked. "I'm fine my dear son, It's nothing, I just missed you little boy", answered her mom. Zaide's tears began to fall. He also missed having her Mom around. Then a few minutes later, he decided to end the telephone conversation with his mom. He thought that maybe the other staffs are looking for him. He hurriedly went to the Coffee Machine and he remembered something. "Blast it!", he sighed.
707
Ren sighed as Zaide started scampering around the back room. Sometimes he just didn't understand how people like Zaide operated their usual business. Can't they be systematic even for the sake of their co-employees? "Can't even separate work from family related matters.." Ren mumbled, wiping the coffee stain a customer spilled a few minutes ago. "Stop muttering things, Ren" Mina chided lightly, noticing that the day was slow and customers were scarce. "If you wish to speak to the newbie, you are free to do so." She chuckled. "I have nothing to say but the necessary tips that he needs to learn" He glared, making Mina's chuckles to turn into giggles. "The work place is for work related ethics..Outside is the place for other things.." "Don't be too hard, Ren" The Manager laughed, slapping the teen on the back. "I'm not very strict on work ethics. If you're competent on what you do, then i have no qualms if you have an open conversation with the staff." The Manager laughed harder as Ren continued to glare at the piece of cloth in his hands. "And I should know. I hired you 'cuz your Professor told me you're a savant!" Ren's reply was to mutter something untoward to said Professor. - - - Updated - - - Ren sighed as Zaide started scampering around the back room.
