mangotango
(Oh crap, I should know this...) Let me see if I can come up with something... Um, I know that the early accounts/history recorded in the Nihon Shoki are sometimes discredited by modern scholars, so this kinda makes it difficult for me to figure out. Ok, I know according to current thought, the earliest is the Jomon period which is Paleolithic/Neolithic Japan (but that's according to modern thought/science). SO... uh... according to the Nihon Shoki... the year was 660BCE with the "mythical" founding of Japan by Emperor Jimmu. It's said that Jimmu was descended from the gods, so I'd say that would be my best guess as to the earliest. Of course, prior to Jimmu, the Nihon Shoki details stories of the kami in the first sections about the divine descent/reign of the gods, etc, so that era must be the period of the Kami/Gods...? (crap guys, IDK... I took a class a long time ago but now my brain's fuzzy... am I making this more difficult than it needs to be?) *___*
Saga
Correct. (*hushbeans) 2 out of 3 questions for the 800 points guessed. You can choose a path again,if you want. (Beppu is located between sea and mountains. There are nine big areas known very well. Oniyama Jigoku happens to be area, which is mountain. Indeed, hot spring area. It is known more like Wani-jigoku, meaning the hell of crocodiles - for the large numbers of crocodiles bred and kept on the grounds surrounding this hot spring.) Saga
Correct. (*carvinusher) 1 out of 3 questions for the 800 points guessed. You can choose a path again,if you want. (This is a really hard question, but you handled it okay. In fact, maiko are around 15-20 years old. So, to become a geisha, they should be at least 20 years old and over.) Incorrect. (*mangotango) 0 out of 3 questions for the 800 points guessed. You can choose a path again,if you want. (Okay, believe it or not, even I had hard time with both - classifying it as correct/incorrect and hard time when I studied the era names. So, I will explain in brief, The first era was Taika era 645 during the reign of Koutoku. That era has been re-adopted in Hakuchi era. But, Taika era has been the first era ever made. Japanese has formed it as an idea born from the eras in China - that time was 140 BC. Even though it was AD, Taika era has been the first era ever introduced in Japan by Emperor Koutoku. The era system has been on hold a few times. One was when Koutoku's death occured. Then Taika era has been stopped and "forgotten". Official records can't help much,so specialists turn to unofficial information. The era name system has be reinstalled by Emperor Temmu, the 40th Emperor of Japan. But soon after his death, the era name system was once again abandoned. The confusion comes when people associate the eras with Emperors. Jinmu era is with its first Emperor, true the era of Gods. Even nowadays Japanese believe that their Emperor is a divine. But if you ask me, Taika was the first era since was "copied" system from Chinese, that time has been 140 BC. Which basically means that Taika has been on hold even though unofficially, later on it has been released as a new era in Japan. The fact that Japan has a few periods without era brings many questions and confusions. Your era is indeed 660 BC, and Taika is 645 AD, but unofficially in records of Nihon Shoki is said that the idea is born from China during that time 140 BC. Which logically makes not Jinmu era first with its first Emperor, but Taika with the forgotten Emperor. Another fact is that modern historians dismiss that era because there is no information about Jinmu and his previous successors. If you think that I didn't classified your answer correctly, please prove me wrong. (: )

I am guilty of associating the era with the emperor... most definitely. That was a challenging question for sure, but that's not a bad thing either! Given the huge influence of China on Japan, I should have done more detailed research, because you do make sense in your explaination. Dang it, I should have been more thorough.) ^^ However, the points don't matter... well, they DO matter, but I'm going to put that aside and just do this for the sake of some fun learning.
