Where was I when they stopped saying "Yaoi"?

Hello everyone. This is my first thread here, even though I have been a member for a while.

Here's the scoop. I just heard today, while writing on a message board(not about yaoi, or manga, so I put their knowledge in questioning), that they don't use the word yaoi in japan anymore. I sat there for almost 5 minutes, mouth open, question marks over my eyes. They don't say yaoi in Japan anymore? But I spoke to my friends there last week, and we talked about the latest yaoi mangas, magazines, movies, animé..... What did I miss? Yeah, I know they're putting both yaoi and shounen-ai under the "BL umbrella" more and more, but my friends have only left shounen-ai, and calls it BL, but not yaoi. I don't think they're calling it yaoi just for my benefit...

Is this really true? Is "yaoi" no longer used in japan?

Interesting topic ^_^

As far as I know yaoi is still used in Japan. Here's also what Wiki says, (I underlined the parts that interest us) it mentions BL as well, but that BL is considered as a separate category from yaoi.

Yaoi has become an umbrella term in the West for women's manga or Japanese-influenced comics with male-male relationships, and it is the term preferentially used by American manga publishers. The actual name of the genre aimed toward women in Japan is called 'BL' or 'Boy's Love'. BL is aimed at the shōjo and josei demographics, but is considered a separate category. Yaoi is used in Japan to include dōjinshi and sex scenes, and does not include gei comi, which is by and for gay men.

Thank you Leslie_LC. That is exactly what i thought and how I and my friends use it. Shounen-ai has disappeared inte Boy's Love, while Yaoi still is Shoinen-ai + the sex.... We speak about different things when we say BL/Yaoi.

My Japanese teacher at university knew the terminology from his daughter and could explain what yaoi was in a decent way when one of my co-students asked what that was *it somehow landed up being a vocabulary, which earned the professor plus points with me ;-)*
