"It isn't in this room, please follow me." Ceries walked to the door and opened it, giving Vaughn a slight smile. "Ah, hello Vaughn. I need to show Mr. Bl- I mean, Brenton, something from the vault."

The vault was where the royal family had kept rare and magical items, as well as ancient documents. It was extremely rare to allow anyone to enter.

Vaughn frowned but nodded, “of course, your highness.” He looked to Brenton then back, “if you’re sure?” Was Brenton controlling him? Except... Ceries has said /Brenton/ and not Mr Black. Ceries was in control.

Brenton didn’t get the significance but nodded. “Lead the way then. I will follow...”

"I'm sure." Ceries lightly brushed his wing against Vaughn. "It's alright." He promised softly.

He led Brenton through the halls and down a couple flights of stairs. He unlocked a door to a short hallway that led to another door. "Please lock that door behind yourself Vaughn." He said, giving the man permission to enter with them.

He walked to the second door and held out his hand, focusing hard. A complex key made of ice formed in his hand. He examined it for a few moments before inserting it into the door and unlocking it.

He pushed the door open to reveal a huge room, the walls lined with shelves of magical items and ancient scrolls, all locked behind glass. The middle of the room had a large table. Ceries stepped into the room and walked over to one of the shelves of scrolls, examining the plaques as he searched for one.

Vaughn relaxed at the wing rub and nodded. He was glad Ceries was okay.

He followed them. Bowing and locking the door behind them and watching in fascination at the key.

Brenton was also fascinated. Such precision. Interesting. But not nearly as interesting as the room revealed. He went to explore but was held back. By Vaughn! Stupid cat. “What?”

“Only the Prince can give you permission to touch in here. Stay here.” Vaughn argued.

Brenton laughed. “Awfully brave suddenly.”

“I have my moments.” Vaughn simply stated.

Ceries made another key out of ice and unlocked one of the glass cases, he got out a pair of white silk gloves and slipped them on before carefully pulling out a scroll wrapped in silk.

He lay the scroll out on the table, using the silk wrapping to keep it from touching anything directly. "You may come in, both of you. But please do not touch anything, some of the things in here are very delicate."

The scroll he had chosen was written in an ancient version of their language, it has beautiful ink paintings illustrating the history of the war it described. The part Ceries had unwrapped showed a woman standing in a field surrounded by lightning, then her meeting the king, then her fighting surrounded by fire with what appeared to be wings of flames.

"It can be difficult to tell what parts of our history are completely factual and what is merely a legend..." Ceries explained. "This is a very old story of a hero who appeared from a storm and fought weilding the power of a phoenix..." He looked up at Brenton "It looks familiar doesn't it?"

Brenton moved closer and looked at the scroll. He couldn’t read the writing.... but “yeah. Looks similar. What does it say happened to her?” Had she returned home? Or did she die here?

Brenton wasn’t sure what to think. Part of him missed home. Electricity for one! But there was a charm here too. And easy bed fellows.

Vaughn looked too. Power of a Phoenix? Those wings did look familiar. “Did the scroll mention anything about controlling the power?” He wondered. Guard and security at heart.

Ceries rolled out more of the scroll. "It says that she spent the next twenty years working with the mage's to look for a way home... Then one day she just... Disappeared..." He frowned slightly in confusion. "No is sure if she found a way back but never told anyone, or if she just gave up and moved away." He glanced up at Brenton. "If you wish to return to your home then I can have the mage's research it. Please keep in mind that this scroll is over a thousand years old, our understanding of magic has greatly grown in that time." He didn't want the man to feel hopeless.

He couldn't help but laugh softly at Vaughn's question, the man really was a great guard. "It says that she quickly became a master of her powers and worked hard to protect the country. But that's about it."

Brenton considered that. So it might be possible to leave? “For now I’m okay. I’ll let you know if that changes....”

He stepped away, eyes looking at everything around him. He didn’t understand most of what he was looking at.

Vaughn nodded, “hopefully Brenton will learn quickly too then....” he looked over at the man in question. Brenton looked... lost? A strange mask for the man.

Ceries nodded and carefully rolled the scroll up again. "There are some other legends of similar things happening in other countries... Although those are much older and so have fewer details." He locked the scroll behind glass again. "Brenton has been working hard to learn, so I am sure that he will make progress soon..." He hesitated for a moment. "There are... Tools in here that can prevent powers from being used... I have no idea if it would even work on Brenton, and obviously I would not use that kind of thing on him without his consent..." Ceries said quickly. "If he decides he wants something to prevent him from losing control during his training then we could try it, but I would like to avoid that..."

Brenton heard them talking but mostly just continued to look. Only half paying attention.

Vaughn wondered if these ‘tools’ could be used if the memory potion failed? He’d discuss it with Ceries later.

Brenton turned when he realised they spoke of him. “No need. I’ll regain control.” He said confidently. He actually felt better about his powers after the interaction with Advyk. “Plus I’m too tired today to full lose it anyway....”

Vaughn frowned but nodded. They’d have to monitor that ‘flaw’. “Don’t tell others about that. If the enemy learnt that you had a weakness.... they’d wear you out then attack us all the same....”

“So little faith in me?” Brenton mocked.

“You’ve given me little cause to have faith in you...” Vaughn stayed calmly.

Ceries let out a soft sigh as he put the gloves away. "Please don't fight..."

He glanced at Brenton. "Is there anything you would like to know about while we're here?" He asked, noticing that the man seemed interested in the items locked away.

Both men stopped and looked at Ceries. Vaughn looked down apologetically and Brenton quirked a brow amused. But they stopped.

Brenton looked and pointed. “What’s that?” It looked like a helmet but.... not? It had feathered wings of the side and was larger than a human head. Designed for some beast perhaps? It looks old and yet new. Gleaming magnificently.

Ceries's eyes lit up at the question, he really loves talking about history although he didn't have many chances for it. "Ah, that's a control helmet from the Corsine war, it was used to pacify war-birds so they could be used for battle. We have better technology now that isn't so harmful to birds, those helmets are quite inhumane."

“The feather detail....” Brenton looked at Ceries ears. “To show who is in charge? Do you still wear armour or use the birds?” He didn’t know why, but he was curious.

"This paticular helmet was used in military parades, so it was made to look more impressive." Ceries explained. "We still have armor and use war birds, they are difficult to train and breed even with modern technology so there aren't very many. You'll see them at the parade for my coronation, they can be a bit frightening..."

Brenton considered that. Then pointed to something else that had caught his eye. A long staff like thing with mechanical parts? He had no idea. “What’s that?”

The idea of seeing trained birds.... didn’t frighten him.

"That's an old lightning rod. It can be used to shoot a bolt of lightning at enemies, it can only be used a few times before breaking down completely." Ceries said. "We have newer versions that are smaller and last longer, but we still haven't found a material that can withstand being used more that a few dozen times..."

“Oh? Curious?” He watched it. “Lightning rods on buildings are usually metal in my world. They help to deflect it harmlessly away...”

Curious, Brenton wandered and stopped. It looked like.... he frowned.... a picture of him? A sketch... but it was.... uncanny! “What’s this?”

"I've heard of such things being used in countries where lightning is more common. It's pretty rare here so we don't need them." Ceries followed him, his eyes widening at the sight of the sketch. He had seen it before of course, but he hadn't remembered exactly what it looked like... But seeing Brenton right next to it...

"I don't know... My father didn't have a chance to tell me about that one." He lied. "It looks a lot like you doesn't it? I'll see if I can find any information on it."

Brenton looked at Ceries a moment, he seemed.... off? Just surprised or something more?

He grabbed his chin. “Do I need to fuck an answer from you? Or do you really not know?” He growled.

Ceries blushed deeply at the man's touch, for a moment his eyes flickered with desire but he quickly shook his head. "N-no, I'm sorry... I really don't know... I'll do some research and tell you what I find. I'm sure there's something in my father's office..." He glanced at the picture. "It's just... Strange..." He said softly, hoping that Brenton would just think he was confused. "It looks exactly like you..."

Brenton eyed him a moment then released him. Satisfied. “Okay. When you learn more we’ll discuss it.” He looked at the picture. “It does.... any idea how old it is?”

Vaughn stepped closer and had a look himself. It did look exactly like Brenton, but how can that be? How could it look like Brenton when Brenton had only just arrived? Vaughn had so many questions to ask Ceries later, but they would have to wait.

"It looks like it's a few centuries old..." Ceries said carefully. "Judging by paper used at least... I can bring in a historian to try to pinpoint a more exact date, if I can't find any information on it at least."

He let out a soft sigh. "Well, I suppose I should finish my work for the day... Dinner is going to be served soon..." He trailed off, not wanting to think about what was happening after dinner.

Brenton perked up at the sound of dinner. “I think I’ll grab a nap before the festivities then.” He laughed and headed to the exit.

Vaughn put a hand on Ceries back. “You okay!”

Ceries's cheeks flushed deeply and he looked away at the man's words. He leaned into Vaughn's touch. "I'm alright... Let's go to my office." He said softly. He pulled away and headed up to his office, making sure to lock everything up behind himself.
