The man scanned the human from head to toe and tried to figure out what he was and if it was a menace but he could tell it was just a frightened person.

 

"You shouldn't wandered the woods at night like that or you're going to be on the menu for demons" said the man that looked like Keiko with narrowed eyes. "Why are you here in the first place?" he said getting closer to the guy noticing the strange clothes that he had. "You have odd clothes to begin with. Are you from the capital?" he asked frowning trying to remember if anyone looked like the guy back in the city but he couldn't remember seeing anyone dressed like him.

 

Seeing that he wasn't getting a respond and that the guy was frightened he bend down on one knee looking closer to him.

"Can you talk? Or did the demon caught your tongue" he said teasing smiling. "You're safe now so ... tell me where you live and i'll escort you home" he said smiling hopping the person would trust him.

As the demon faded away Hikaru collapsed on the ground panting desperately. He looked up at his savior and even under the dim moonlight he couldn't possibly not recognize that handsome face. "K... The man stumble a little at the fast uprise of the man hugging him tight and calling him his name. It was strange cause he didn't know the guy but yet the guy seemed to know him. Not to mention his strange clothing that he never seen before too. As the guy stepped away and looked at him, making him even more confused at the words he was speaking, not understanding quite all of it he remained silent till the small outburst.

 

"Demons are not a prank. They are vicious evil creature who will feast on your worst fears and then devour you along with your soul completely" he said looking strange at the man. "And what do you mean costume?" he narrowed his eyes.

 

"I don't know who you are or how you know my name but ... you should return home. The woods are not a safe place to wonder at night" he said placing his hands on his shoulders pushing him away standing up, making a small bow then turning walking away. He felt a little unease by the men. The way he was talking to him, saying his name. It was like the guy knew him but he couldn't remember anything about the guy.

He said weakly: "There's no such thing as demons.. right?" While normally Hikaru would be right, but after just being chased by that monster in the woods he sounded rather silly for denying the reality before him. But what truly chilled him to the core was the way Keiko was talking to him, it was like he was a stranger to the man he loved more than anything in this world, and that was just utterly heartbreaking. Or could he have really mistaken some stranger for his boyfriend?

 

Hikaru panicked when "Keiko" bowed to him before walking away. "W... wait!" Hikaru cried out as he grabbed the man's hand: "I... I don't know how I got here... I live at #$^ city &&* street number 4 room 503.... I don't suppose you know how to get there?"

Turning his hand he caught his hand as he helped him up of the ground. "Fallow me and don't stop on the road. Stay beside me , okay?" he asked hopping the guy understood.

 

"Since you know my name, may i know yours?" he asked as they were walking.

"Ch'in dynasty... Poyang?" Hikaru muttered in confusion. Weren't those names used back in history? Adding to the traditional clothes and sword "Keiko" was wearing could he have fallen back in time somehow? The idea seemed ridiculous then again so did the thought of demons actually existing. He let out a sigh of relief when "Keiko" seemed willing to help. Almost instinctively he held the man's hand a bit tighter somehow knowing that he could be trusted. But what the man said next was rather a surprise.

 

"I already know your name? So you are called Keiko after all? What a coincidence..." As they walked through the dark woods they happened to pass through an area where the branches were a bit less dense, and as the beam of moonlight illuminated Hikaru's features he said: "My name is Hikaru. Mitsurugi Hikaru."

He didn't comment on the surprise in his voice about the time they were in so he walked further. All until he said his name. That was when he stopped and turned in confusion and finally saw him. His pulled his back looking in shock at him.

 

"How is this possible?" he mumbled to himself taking a step back. "You ... you look like .... how can this be?" he didn't know to say. He was about to take his sword out thinking it was a shapeshifter demon but something in his guts was holding him back from doing so. but why?

 

Trying to understand he looked around and took his coat and put it over the other, covering his head. "Keep it over your head and face. Let's go" he said taking his hand walking now faster.

 

It didn't took them long to reach the end of the forest right to a mansion where the lights were up and the smoke fire was build out of the horn.

 

"Master ... You need to see this" said 'Keiko' as he entered the yard reaching the door.

When "Keiko" saw his face under the moonlight Hikaru too was able to get a better look at the man in front of him and as he thought, the man looked almost identical to Keiko, his Keiko, obviously with the exception of his hairstyle and clothing, but there was also something else, was a similar feeling he got when he looked at a masterly made sword, sharp, cold, frightening, but undeniably beautiful. While he much preferred the warmth he felt whenever he was with his own Keiko, he had to admit he felt a certain attraction from him.

 

"Ugh.. thanks?" Hikaru muttered in confusion as "Keiko" put the coat over his head. He was feeling a little chilly so the coat provided some comfort, though given how the man made him cover his face he doubt the gesture was out of kindness or concern of his health. Soon they cleared the forest and arrived at what apepared to be a traditional style mansion. As he was lead through the yard and into the door a voice too familiar for comfort came from inside the house.

 

"What took you so long Keiko?" The source of the voice emerged from behind a sliding door and Hikaru looked in shock as his eyes met with the other. It was like he was looking into a mirror but his reflection was wearing the traditional clothes of a shrine priest similar to the ones his father wore in his work. As shocked as Hikaru was, his "reflection" seemed equally surprised, but only for a brief moment. "Well well well Keiko, what an interesting guest you've brought me?" the man said as he approached Hikaru and nodded slightly: "Greetings child. Welcome to my humble home. My name is Mitsurugi Hikaru. What's your name?"

 

At this point Hikaru's mind was a total mess and he just muttered automatically: "Mi.. Mitsurugi Hikaru..."

 

"Yes, that's my name..." the other Hikaru smiled as he looked at the face identical to his with a bemused expression: "Oh wait, you're not telling me that we have the same name, are you?"

 

"Ye... yes, we do." Hikaru replied.

 

The Hikaru wearing priest costume fell silent as he lowered his head and held his chin. A slight frown came to his face for a brief moment followed by what could only be described as a bitter smile. Then he raised his head and looked up towards his doppelganger and said: "I see.... Looks like we have a lost child at our hands.. Don't worry child, you're safe here." He turned to look at "Keiko" and ordered: "Tell the servants to prepare a bath and bring him some of my clean clothes. Once he's cleaned up take him to my room. We've got much to discuss."

"Sorry for being late master" said Keiko bowing his head in respect stepping aside to let him see the person he just brought, which he found to be very strange as they looked alike and had the same name.

 

He looked at them both as they speak and he found it strange to understand what exactly was happening. He never encountered something like this before. Just some shapeshifter demons but this guy wasn't one. And it seemed that his master knew better and trusted the guy so he had to comply.

 

Hearing his name he looked up at his master.

 

"Tell the servants to prepare a bath and bring him some of my clean clothes. Once he's cleaned up take him to my room. We've got much to discuss."

 

"Yes master. Right away" he said bowing his head again turning to the new guy. "Please fallow me" he said entering the mansion walking down some halls to the bathroom opening the door. "Here is the bathroom. I'll ask the servants to bring you hot water and i'll bring some clothes too" he said bowing his head again as he turned and left.

 

On his way he spoke to some servants which immediately started to prepare the needed tools for the bath and he looked in his master closet for some clothes and returned to the room where he left the guy. Opening the door he left the clothes on a box keeping his eyes away from the guy.

 

"Here are the clothes. If you need help getting dressed let me know. I'll be waiting outside till you're finished" he said turning and closing the door behind him, giving the guy some privacy.

Soon arriving at the bathroom he waited there for the servants to fill the bath with hot water before he took off his dirty clothes and walked into the wooden bathtub. He let out a long tired sigh feeling the bath water warming up his cold body. Leaning back against the edge he muttered: "Just what the hell is going on with this place.... these men... Keiko and Hikaru... why do they look like us, and even have the same name?" After being chased in the woods he felt fatigue creeping up upon him and almost fell asleep, but the voice of Keiko quickly woke him up. "Ah yeah.. thank you Keiko.... I can call you Keiko right?" He turned towards the door and asked: "So... about Hikaru, not me of course but the one you know, you called him... master? So are you like a student of his or you work for him?"

Being on the hall he heard the guy talking to him so he tried to respond as normal as possible.

"Yeah .. You can call me that. I don't have a specific title so , using my name is easier" he said standing straight against the wall, with his arms crossed over his chest thinking about the second round of questions the other had given him.

 

"Yes. He is my master as i am his guardian. For generations now the Mitsurugi Family has been and still are priests in charge of spiritual defense against demons or dark spiritual creatures. They can perform powerful magic which consumes a lot of energy and that's direct combat ability is hard. Because of that matter it is required a bodyguard" he said casually but then blinked a few times realizing that he told him so much without even thinking that he was surprised.

Hikaru listened to Keiko describing his relationship with the other Hikaru, and the more he talked the more he found the similarities to be uncanny. After all his own "Mitsurugi family has been priests running the small shrine in the countryside for countless generations, and he was sure at some point they probably performed some rituals which supposed to have warded off evil spirits. It all seemed too similar to be mere coincidence and he couldn't help but keep coming up with all sorts of wild theories in his mind. After a while he emerged from the bath and dried him off before putting on the clean clothes

 

"Sorry for keeping you waiting." Hikaru said as he opened the door. Now wearing traditional clothing he looked even more similar to the other Hikaru. His hair was still quite wet and his skin had a tint of red from being freshly out of the bath. "Please lead the way Keiko. I hope the other Hikaru could help sort things out..."

 

Shortly after the two of them arrived at the priest's room. "Please come on in. Have a seat" the man said as he pointed at the zabuton cushion across from him. He had his legs crossed on top of a cushion as well and had another cushion set right beside him for his guardian. The room was quite spacious with piles of books and scrolls stacked up all over the place. "My apologies for the untidiness but I just can't get enough of books as it's one of my favorite pastimes. "Ye.. yes I do. In fact I'm actually writing a novel." Hikaru replied, somehow feel comfortable to talk about such matters with the man near identical to him.

 

"Is that so! I've always been on the reader's side when it comes to literature. Perhaps I should give authorship a try as well? What do you think Keiko?" The other Hikaru chuckled and said: "Putting our hobbies aside. I think it's about time that we discuss the matter at hand, namely who are you and where did you come from... Or perhaps I should say... when?" the priest paused for a moment and continued: "Can you tell me what you remember before arriving here? "

 

"O... okay.." Hikaru nodded nervously as he began recounting his story, how he got off work late and suddenly found himself in the dark woods, how the monster grabbed his pendant and when he tried to take it back the monster was able to capture him. Then just when he thought he was about to die he was rescued by "Keiko", who looked just like the Keiko he knew.

 

"That's... fascinating..." the priest Hikaru muttered as he crossed his arms. "So let's start from the conclusion, essentially you've traveled back in time, and not only that, you are me, well, not exactly me, but my reincarnation. And I suspect that your Keiko is the reincarnation of my Keiko as well!"

"This pendant was a gift from Keiko to me. It's one of a kind in this world. By any chance you got it from your Keiko as well?" the priest Hikaru asked.

Leaning against his guardian Hikaru looked at Keiko with a teasing smile: "Oh my dear guardian, to think that not only you manage to find your way back to my side again in our next life, but also gave me the very same gift!
