I always (when talking with friends) referred to her as a girl. maybe it's her features (which doesn't always apply because there are so many gorgeous guys in anime ). I think that because she's grown up with animals that also she is a girl she uses the manly pronouns out of reflex (because in packs, it's the alpha male leading the hunt, well that's the accepted idea at least) I'm not sure maybe I'm over-thinking it. It also may be that she's so much of a tomboy that she decides to refer to herself as a male. and i don't remember, did she have any women in her earlier life? that may also have an affect on it. It's been awhile since I've seen it so I need to rewatch it again.
