It's interesting, in Spanish pencil is Lapiz and in Portuguese is Lapis. It's very interesting indeed! If I recall correctly, they both have a Latin base no? I can recognise Portuguese when I see 'em' and 'do' in the sentences and certain diacritical marks on the letters, plus spellings.
