Remalade
It all started in a lab. An underground government facility undergoing experiments that the President of the United States wasn't even aware of. Scientists tried to restore human life, attempting to bring fallen comrades back to life. Their efforts went awry when a bite from a test subject led to the transmission of a deadly disease. Before anyone could stop it, the disease had spread like wildfire, infecting millions in a matter of weeks. The disastrous side affects would only appear after being activated by a bite. No one believed in "zombies" until they had seen the infected with their own eyes. Two years have passed since the disease spead worldwide, and all of the governments have fallen. Now, humanity is left to struggle for survival. My character: Name: Nagimara Kise Age: Will be twenty years old soon Height: 5'8 Position: Seke Pic: Bio: Kise was born as the only child of a middle-class but respected family. When the apocalypse began, he dropped everything to get back to them. Searching for his family is the only thing driving him forward anymore. Random facts: -Kise's father was a retired Kendo player, and he was raised to value honesty, fairness, strength, and honor. Remalade
Kise leaned against the rough brick wall to take a drink of water, making sure that he'd left some for later. He quickly closed the bottle and shoved it into his backpack. His eyes scanned over his surroundings closely. Kise had been walking for a matter of days now, after the car he'd found had stalled and died in the middle of the road. He was exhausted, but he knew that he had to keep moving. The young man, at the very least, needed to find a safe place to rest for the night. He squinted at the signs on the horizon, and he could just barely make out the symbols for a gas station and motel. Perhaps he could find a place to barricade himself and rest. Twenty minutes of tired walking later, he arrived at the ravaged gas station and run-down motel. He had a feeling the places were in poor condition before all of this mess even started. Checking over his shoulder instinctively, Kise looked around warily before pulling out his gun from his hip and raising it defensively. He pushed open the shattered glass door of the gas station and stepped inside slowly. Although his face was straight, his heart was pounding in his chest nervously. One wrong move could be the difference between life and death. He heard the sound of something falling from a shelf a few feet away, and he froze in his tracks, his weapon raised and his finger on the trigger. greenbunny2468
The bark under his fingers was rough, the tree harder to carve into then he thought. Ryou sighed loudly the rock in his hand doing little of what he hoped it would. “Come on!” He whispered hurriedly to himself as he carved harder, an X appearing on the tree Ryou had been tirelessly scratching away at. Content with his work – the jagged mark like a treasure sign – Ryou stepped away from the tree and was about to drop his rock when the sound of crunching alerted him that he was not alone. Tensing Ryou gripped the rock tighter in his hand, and prayed it would be enough – the heavy steps creeping closer. “W-why did we stop?” The sound of footsteps approaching had made the teen tense, but the familiar voice made his grip on the rock loosen and his shoulders un-hunch. Whipping around the teen glared at the older male who had his hands resting on his knees, panting heavily the older man looked like he would collapse at any moment, his black hair drenched in sweat. “I’m making another.” Was the teen’s harsh reply, the fear the man’s footsteps had brought him making Ryou sound madder than he was. The black haired man took a second to catch his breath then relied quietly: “You really think she’s still alive?” Ryou looked insulted at the question. “That crappy old motel isn’t that far from here. If she made it away from those – those things, she should see the marks on the trees and find us.” “We shouldn’t have just left her.” The man said quietly, hoping Ryou wouldn’t hear his comment. “Well – we did.” Ryou said stiffly. Dropping the rock, Ryou grabbed his duffel bag and walked forward, not bothering to wait for the other male.
Remalade
Kise relaxed slightly when he heard a human voice mutter from behind the shelf, but still held onto his gun tightly. Even if he knew that it wasn't one of those disgusting monsters, an unknown person could be just as dangerous. Letting his guard down or trusting the wrong person could lead to his death as well. He took a careful step forward, then ducked behind a counter. Kise stayed still for just a second. He could hear slow footsteps, but the person gave no sign that they had seen him. He moved over slightly, and he could just see the faint outline of a young woman. Her back was turned, so he couldn't tell how old she was. From her stance, Kise could tell she was holding something. Was she armed? He decided to just sit and wait for her to leave instead of creating a confrontation. People tended to act impulsively in dangerous situations, or react violently when they felt threatened. Just last week he had seen a teenager shoot an older man in the chest because she thought he was trying to take her food. He had also seen a rough-looking man shoot a family of three just to steal their vehicle. Everything that had happened had made things much more dangerous, and he wasn't taking any chances. greenbunny2468
Rika was a rational person, she knew she wasn’t special and that being bitten would only led to one thing. She also knew that despite the part of her that wanted to blame Ryou for leaving her behind, and that coward for following the teen, she would’ve done the same. Stealing herself to her fate was the only thing she could do. Her rational part also why she knew after killing the zombies that had trapped her inside the motel and making it outside she wouldn’t be able to follow the x’s she knew were from Ryou. Limping her way back inside the woman searched the shelves and found paper, making needless noise as she went. Finding a pen also, Rika slumped to the floor ready to write her will. “Outside..trees…find Ryou…good, has…food, water, guns.” Unknowingly Rika had spoken aloud as she wrote, though that meant little to the bleeding women. Looking down at the crumpled paper satisfied, Rika clutched her gun tighter and read her note one last time. Dear whoever reads this, Outside of this place there will be a pine tree, in its bark there should be an x mark. Other marks will cover more trees the farther you go down without a doubt. If you should follow the trail you will find Ryou, he’s a good kid – he will have someone else with him. Having raided a quick mart a few days back they will have food, water, and some guns we found along the way. If you chose to find them the goal Ryou has is someplace north. Please tell them Rika sent you, and that I will not be coming any time soon. You can have the gun you will find on my body – the clip will be full, minus one bullet. I hope to God whoever is reading this isn’t one of those fools that have gone mad. This world, despite everything, wasn’t so bad. Rika A bitter smile was given as the women read her closing remark, raising the pistol to her head Rika’s eyes closed. Same melancholy smile in place has she eased her finger off the trigger – a loud bang rang throughout the broken-down gas station, bright red staining the crumpled piece of paper. Remalade
Kise strained to hear the stranger's mumbling. Who was the person talking to? Did they have a radio or walkie talkie? He tried to take another peek around the counter, but the woman had moved out of his line of sight. He sat back down, hoping the woman would hurry up and leave. He went still when he noticed how quiet it had become. Before Kise could move, an ear-splitting bang erupted not too far away from him, shaking him down to his bones. It was a sound he was used to by now, but still struck a dreadful sense of fear and panic within him. Kise slowly stood up behind the counter, his weapon still raised as he slowly ventured out. The metallic smell of blood hit him like a whip, and he cringed at the red splatter on a nearby shelf. When he turned down the aisle, he was met by a leaning corpse. It was obviously a suicide, but his only question was why she'd done it. Maybe she had been tired of running? He had seen a few people take their own lives because they were so overwhelmed and just wanted a way out of the hellish world they'd become trapped in. He took a cautious step forward, and his eyes landed on the discolored bruise and bite mark on her leg. He didn't particularly feel bad for her since he didn't know the woman personally, but he admired her courage to take her own life before letting herself become one of those horrid creatures. He stepped back to leave, but stopped when he saw a bloodstained piece of paper. He pointed his gun at the corpse, just to be safe, before plucking the note from the curl of her fingers. He realized it was something like a suicide letter, and he remembered his father telling him stories of samurai warriors that would leave long letters of repentance before taking their own lives. If only they were in the samurai era instead of this one. After reading the letter, Kise reviewed his options. He could continue alone, and he would only have to worry about himself. Finding food and water hadn't been that hard, and he knew how to conserve. On the other hand, it could be more beneficial to work in a group. He would have more help to fight off those things, for starters. Not to mention the fact that they were headed north just as he was. With a sigh, Kise decided that he would give it a try, and if he didn't feel comfortable, he would continue alone. Kise glanced down at the woman (Rika, was it?), and figured he should do something to show his gratitude. Sure that she was dead and would stay that way, he tucked his gun back over his waist and approached the corpse. He laid her down flat on the floor, taking the gun and clasping her hands over her stomach. She would have looked like she was preparing for a coffin if it weren't for the blood and dirt. He found an old blanket in an aisle and covered her body, then said a small prayer. Kise prepared himself to get back into the cautionary mindset, then left the gas station and headed off in the direction of the marked trees. greenbunny2468
Ryou knew he could be a little rash – it was one of his charm points as far as he was concerned. Though paired with his rashness he could also be a little dumb sometimes – in hindsight the two weren’t a good mix; though that never stopped Ryou from acting on his dumb, rash whims. His latest whim being to keep walking even though night had fallen – it wasn’t like it was a rule of his to stop walking and find shelter at night, but it was just something simple that he had taken to doing. A learned survival method if you will; something he seemed to do since the world had gone to hell. Though trudging headfirst into a dark forest wasn’t something he would do even if the world hadn’t fallen apart – it was something he found himself doing now. Stumbling over fallen branches and tripping over lose twigs, Ryou using the moon as his only guide walked freely through the dark forestry, the sound of crunching leaves behind him something he believed to be his companion’s footsteps as he followed him. Though the slowness of the other’s steps was starting to annoy him; maybe it was time to take a little break and set up camp. They could get some rest and restart tomorrow. Turing to let the black haired male in on his plans – Ryou’s throat locked up at what he saw. Someone had been following him, but it wasn’t the right someone. Remalade
Kise glanced up at the sky, noticing that the late afternoon light was quickly receding. He needed to hurry and find these people before it got too dark. Even if he was armed, trudging around in the dark in an unknown forest was extremely dangerous. Luckily, the moon seemed to be a bit brighter tonight, so he could still see the outlines of the trees. The moonlight reflecting off of them showed whether they held the tell-tale "x" or not. The number of marked trees seemed to be increasing, so maybe he was getting closer? Taking another step, Kise hadn't noticed the tree root tangled and jutting out of the ground. With a loud grunt, he tripped and landed on his stomach. His body ached after the painful contact with the forest floor, but he didn't dare make another sound. He remained still, listening hard to make sure that his mistake hadn't attracted any unwanted attention. When he was sure it was safe, Kise slowly pushed himself up and examined himself as best as he could in the mild darkness. He had a flashlight, but he didn't want to waste the batteries out here when he could still see slightly. He ensured that none of his supplies had rolled away, then used a nearby tree to steady himself. He could feel a blunt pain in the leg he had tripped with, but he knew that he didn't have the time to stop and wait for it to pass. He needed to keep moving. Kise trudged on, a little slower than before because of his leg, keeping a vigilant eye out for more marked trees. He hadn't seen any for a matter of minutes, and he feared that he had gone off course. Suddenly, he froze, his gaze landing on a dark figure up ahead. It was moving as slowly as he was, and he feared that he had unknowingly stumbled upon one of those creatures. Kise immediately reached for the gun on his hip. He raised it quickly, his finger already poised on the trigger. His blood ran cold when the figure turned around and seemed to stare right at him. greenbunny2468
Ryou put together two things quickly as he took in the sight before him – One: it wasn’t a zombie that had been following him, but another human and not the one that should have been. Two: the fucker was pointing a gun at him. Ryou thought he would’ve been more scared at the prospect of having a gun turned on him, but as he took in the other male – Che! Taller than him, glasses covering his shocked face, gun pointed towards the teen – the only thing Ryou felt was white-hot rage burning through his veins. He guessed having dead people trying to eat him had wasted away all his fear for normal things – like the incomplete standoff Ryou suddenly found himself in. Turing completely so he was glaring fully at the other, Ryou‘s voice rung throughout the forest, snappy and filled with contempt; “You goanna shoot or just stand there looking stupid, asshole?” He knew – some distant memory in the back of his mind from a conversion he and sister had – that he should be trying to humanize himself to his could-be-killer; telling the man standing before about how he was a person and that it was immoral to kill him, but Ryou’s what to fuck with the person that still managed to look so put together and in-control in such a world squashed his logical part. Remalade
Kise gave an audible sigh of relief when he realized that the figure was human, but the stranger's antagonistic tone made him stiffen again. Humans could be even harsher than those creatures. Of course, he wasn't going to shoot him, the person hadn't given him a reason to. Yet. If the rude stranger made any moves to attack him, Kise would be forced to protect himself and retaliate. But he never made the first attack on a human. "I'm not going to shoot you if you don't give me a reason to." he replied calmly. Talking to the stranger reminded him of the reason that he was there in the first place. "Are you Ryou? I met Rika....she told me to come and find you." His grip on the gun hadn't lessened, but he hoped that he had found the right person. His lower leg was still throbbing painfully, and he couldn't afford to waste anymore time wading through the forest looking for someone that could very well already be dead. greenbunny2468
It took Ryou a second to soak in the other’s words, he was almost about to ask the strange male where Rika was and why in the hell she would send him instead of coming herself, but then he got it. Understood that his best chance of seeing Rika was her trying to eat him, and then either killing her or letting his friend roam the earth as one of those things until the end of time. …That was the type of world they were living in after all and they had left Rika behind knowing there was a huge chance they wouldn’t see her again – though having the worst-case scenario come true hurt Ryou more then he thought it would. Trying to pass the weird pang in his heart off as hunger pains or some weird cramp, Ryou gave the other an indifferent look, raising his eyebrow slightly as he answered the other – “For some reason hearing you say my name pisses me of, but yeah. I’m Ryou.” Catching that the other still had in him in his sights with the gun annoyed Ryou immensely; “If you’re not going to shoot, put down the gun, asshole.” Running his hand through his tousled dirt caked hair Ryou smiled slightly, “We’ve got shit to talk about after all.”
Remalade
Frowning at the insult, Kise stared at him for a few more seconds before slowly lowering his weapon. He put the safety back on returned it to its place on his hip. "Fine we can talk...but I'm going to sit down..." he said hesitantly. He announced his actions so that the stranger wouldn't feel threatened by his sudden movements. The dark-haired young man slowly lowered himself to sit down at the base of a large tree next to him. He checked all of his possessions and assured that they were still secured on his person with a relieved sigh. Kise's gaze trailed to his leg, which was still throbbing slightly. He didn't want to tell this person that he was injured. After all, he had just met him, and he didn't know what he was capable of. What if he tried to rob him of his equipment and leave him for dead? Kise was strong, but he doubted that he would be able to fight off a band of those creatures with an injured leg and no weapons. He glanced up at this Ryou person and squinted in the darkness at him. He could see the outline of the young man, but it was hard for him to see details. Did he have blue hair? He wondered what the boy's parents had thought of such a ridiculous thing. But then again, with the situation they were all in now, hair color was most likely the least of their worries. "So what do we need to talk about? I found Rika in a gas station not too far from here. She looked like she was badly injured, and she killed herself before I even got the chance to talk to her. When I came over to her, she had this letter in her hand, telling me to find you. So I've been searching through this forest for over an hour looking for you. I'm Kise, by the way." he added, inclining his head formally. Even in a situation like this, his politeness would not be forgotten.
greenbunny2468
So it had been his actions that had ultimately killed her, huh? This “Kise” guy reaffirming Ryou’s own thoughts put a bitter taste in the teen’s mouth. Inhaling sharply at the thought of Risa killing herself just to escape from becoming one of those things made Ryou shudder – his airway restricting like cotton was suddenly clogging his throat, breathing coming hard to the suddenly hyperventilating teen; “I...k-killed her?” Unknowingly Ryou had said the words aloud as he paced back and forth through the clearing the turmoil rampaging through his mind making the teen not care about the audience to his breakdown. “I – we shouldn’t have l-left…dead – we killed her…” Suddenly feeling the urge to bow over and puke, Ryou set his jaw tightly and fight down the illness rising in his gut. This probably wouldn’t be the last time someone’s death was hanging over his head – if he wanted to survive he had to stop caring so much… Raking a shaking hand through his hair, Ryou forced himself to stop pacing and turned around so he was facing the now seated Kise – his voice cold and distant as he beat down his emotions; “What we need to talk about, Kise,” The way the name was said made it sound more like a growl leaving a wild animal’s maw then a word leaving a humans’ lips. “ – is why you would travel for an hour through a forest with no real idea who you were looking for – or what they were capable of just the to carry out some dead women’s last wish. If it’s condolences you wanna deliver: thanks, they’ve been received – you can fucking go now – but if it’s something you want…well, you should probably start talking, time is a luxury no one in the shitty world as anymore after all.”
