Appearance: Haruka is a tall, young man with short, straight black hair and blue eyes. He always retains serious expression on his face and never seems to show any kind of emotion. He seems to wear his swimming jammers everywhere. As pointed out by members of the swim team on multiple occasions, all of his swimsuits look virtually the same (they are all black swim jammers, but with slightly different patterns of violet), yet he claims they all fit differently.

His typical school uniform consists of light-brown trousers, a white shirt with a green necktie, a dark gray unbuttoned blazer and blue sneakers. During the spring and summer, he would wear his summer uniform, which consists of gray trousers, a white shirt with a dark gray collar, a green dotted necktie and blue sneakers.

Personality: Haruka is a strong and quiet person who loves water. He is a taciturn and reserved individual. His strength lies in his confidence in his decisions. Up until Rin beat him their swim race, Haruka never questioned his reasons for swimming.

Haruka is very protective towards his friends, especially Makoto. During the team's summer training, Makoto relived his childhood nightmare in the ocean and felt compelled to tell his team the truth about his fear when the subject was brought up. Immediately sensing Makoto's hesitation, Haruka commanded Rei to drop the question.

Haruka also deeply values his friendship with Rin. Afraid that he had hurt Rin when Rin lost to him in a swimming race when they were little, Haruka had given up on swimming competitively just to guarantee Rin's victory the next time they were to race. This willingness to compete was gradually restored, however, when Rin challenged him a number of times. He was extremely devastated when he had overheard that Rin wanted to abandon swimming, as he wished desperately to be able to swim with Rin again. Haruka demonstrates his great determination, through his efforts to revive Rin's passion by seeking him out and offering consolation before the relay race.

Haruka's attraction to water makes him a very comical person; he will swim anywhere and in anything with water (including a fish tank). His style captivates many others, and he has a powerful fixation towards freestyle swimming in particular.

Childhood: Haruka had been friends with Makoto ever since they were very young. One day, at the playground near their homes, Makoto asked Haruka to join the swimming club with him, but Haruka immediately refused, saying it's "too much trouble". When Makoto said he won't join as well and was asked why not, Makoto said that there was no point in joining if Haruka wasn't with him. Makoto eventually got Haruka to jointhe club with him and since then, they were the members of Iwatobi Swimming Club.

Junior High: Starting his junior high school life, Haruka wasn't intending to do club activities at all because he didn't like that they would cut his swimming time down. He didn't see the point of doing anything other than swimming and time spent in P.E. classes doing sports was enough for him. On the first day of school, Asahi approached Haruka and said, "You look like the type of guy with no friends," therefore having a one-sided friendship with him. Haruka didn't seem to like Asahi and when he asked him to call him "Haru" like Makoto does, he said that he could, but just because he did not want Asahi to follow him around more.

Trivia:

-Like all members of the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club, Haruka has a female name.

-He bathes with his swimming trunks on.

-Haruka will go anywhere as long as there's a body of water that he can get into.

-Haruka has exceptionally great art skills, such as drawing and wood carving.

-The year before, Haruka had been one of 987 entries entered in the Iwatobi Town mascot contest. His entry was named Tobimaru-kun. According to Gou, it wasn't very cute.

-He has a certain romantic attraction to water.

-Rin stated that Haruka has said "Tadaima" (ただいま), which means "I'm home", upon arriving to their swimming club during elementary school.

-If Haruka was a girl and he had to date one of the boys from the Iwatobi Swimming Club, he would choose Makoto because it was the easiest choice. However, his choice was quickly changed to Nagisa when the first year promised to cook him mackerel for breakfast every morning.

-Rei states that Haruka's decisions all center around mackerel.

-Haruka and Makoto appear to have a game that consists of Makoto guessing what Haruka is thinking.

-Haruka once wore a girl's swimsuit in elementary school. Nagisa borrowed his trunks because the blonde's sister swapped out his swimsuit for a girl's one. Haruka claims that he had no recollection of this memory, but shows that he does at the end of the track.

-Haruka's best subjects are Home Economics and Art, while he's bad at English.

Appearance: Makoto is a tall young man with short, olive green hair and droopy green eyes. His usual school uniform consists of light brown trousers, a white shirt with a green necktie, dark gray unbuttoned blazer and orange sneakers. During the spring and summer, he also wears his summer uniform that consists of gray trousers, a white shirt with a dark gray collar, the green dotted necktie and the orange sneakers.

While swimming, he wears black long leg swim pants that have green patterns on them. He's seen wearing black framed glasses once, but it's not said whether he really needs them or not.

Personality: Makoto is a nice and considerate guy, who is always concerned about his friends' welfare. Due to his caring personality, he is often seen with a gentle smile on his face. However, he is rather weak-hearted and can get scared easily, as shown when he appeared terrified of the possibility that their old Swimming Club may be haunted. When he gets scared he tends to hide behind Haruka or cling to him in some way.

Makoto also seems to be one of the more sensible people in the group and can get a bit worn out from his friends' peculiar antics and mannerisms. He is the one usually restraining Haruka from randomly stripping or diving into fish tanks.

Makoto and Haruka have been together for so long that Makoto is able to read Haru's mind. He is also shown to be slightly manipulative, often using Haruka's love of water to his advantage to convince Haruka to do what he wants. It was also shown that Haruka dislikes it when people use his first name, but Makoto always somehow manages to win the argument and calls him 'Haru'.

Childhood:Makoto and Haruka have been friends since at least kindergarten. It was in kindergarten that Haruka started calling Makoto by his first name and Makoto calling Haruka "Haru-chan". It was Makoto who wanted to join the Iwatobi Swimming Club when they were children and Haru tagged along with him. Due to the length of time Makoto and Haruka have been friends, Makoto can usually guess what Haruka is thinking and vice-versa, resulting in the both of them being able to hold wordless conversations.

When Makoto was young, he would visit a small fishing harbor. At the fishing harbor, there was a nice old fisherman that would sometimes play with Makoto. During the summer, at the festival near the harbor, Makoto wanted to scoop for fish but already used up all his allowance. The fisherman gave him two goldfish to make him feel better. Later that summer, there was a big typhoon and the fisherman's boat sank. Many people drowned including the old fisherman. Later when the two goldfish died, he made a grave, which is now a precious memory to him, for them, in which he changes the flowers everyday. Because of this experience he is afraid of the ocean.

Elementary: As a child, Makoto used to swim the breaststroke and usually won the 100m breaststroke events against Rin but would lose the 50m breaststroke against him. It was when he teamed-up with Rin, Nagisa Hazuki and Haruka for the relay in elementary school that Makoto switched to backstroke and found that he was more comfortable with the stroke and has since specialized in the backstroke.

Junior High: In Iwatobi Junior High School, Makoto was known as "the big kid from class 2" because of his good physique and because of it, Kisumi Shigino asked him to join Iwatobi Junior High's basketball team after seeing him play during one of the P.E. classes class 1 and class 2 had together. One day before their practice at Iwatobi Swimming Club, Makoto and Haruka ran into a black stray dog. Makoto liked it but Haruka told him not to pay attention to it because it will follow him around. Even though Makoto made sure not to look at it, the dog followed them and despite Nagisa's assumptions that the dog is attached to Haruka, it was in fact attached to Makoto. It stayed down the stone stairs near Haruka and Makoto's house, but Makoto couldn't keep it because his mom wouldn't stop sneezing it if was near her. Haruka then told Makoto he would keep the dog if it stayed down the stone stairs when they come back home from school.

Trivia:

-Like all members of the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club, Makoto has a female name.

-Despite being on the swim team, Makoto is afraid of the ocean.[3] However, in the High☆Speed!, Makoto is not only afraid of the ocean, but the water in general.

-Makoto has been described as the wishy-washy type by Haruka, because he is too nice and was unable to decide which club member would be his boyfriend if he were a girl.

-Makoto and Haruka appear to have a game that consists of Makoto guessing what Haruka is thinking.

-According to Free! TV Animation Guidebook:

-Makoto likes eating green curry and chocolate.

-Makoto's best subject is Literature, while he's bad at English and Art.

-Makoto likes physical activity and manual labor.

-Makoto was voted Sexiest Anime Man of 2013 by winning over Haru Yoshida from Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun with 24861 votes.

-Makoto has won the Muscle Contest held at the renewed Iwatobi Swimming Club, where Gou was one of the judges. However, the one Gou gave the most points was Rin.

-Makoto's voice actor, Tatsuhisa Suzuki, is the vocalist for OLDCODEX, the band which performed the opening themes for both seasons of Free!, "Rage on" and "Dried Up Youthful Fame".

Appearance: Rin is a tall young man with semi-long, maroon colored hair. He has red eyes and shark-like teeth. His winter and fall school uniform consists of white trousers, a white buttoned up jacket with a black t-shirt underneath it and black shoes. In the spring his uniform consists of a black polo shirt with a pink collar, as well as a pair of white pants and black shoes. His school bag is a red messenger bag with the word "shark" printed on the outside.

While swimming, he wears black jammers which have red markings trailing along the length of his outer legs and thighs, as well as a pair of dark blue tinted goggles.

Personality: When he was young, Rin showed a lot of passion and competitiveness for swimming, as well as an interest in teamwork.[4] After years passed, his ideals about swimming drastically changed. He does not care that much about the trophy they won during their elementary days.

As the Iwatobi High School Swim Club continues to practice and have fun together, Rin often times catches glimpses of them during their practices and is notably morose when he sees how happy they are together while he stands there alone. The teenager aspires to make his father's dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer come true and has detached himself from everyone while working toward that particular goal.[9] At times, Rin displays a softer side, as he is shown to still harbor concern for his friends' well-being and he acts like a mentor toward his younger sister Gou and teammate Nitori. Rin is conflicted emotionally, but his pride as a swimmer is used to mask his insecurities.

Childhood: Rin's father died when Rin was very young; his father was a swimmer who had dreamed of going to the Olympics but had to give-up his goal and become a fisherman. Due to a tragic incident (a storm), his father drowned three kilometers off the coast along with the rest of his crew. Rin stated that he has very few memories of his father and cannot even recall what his father looked like, as his father would be gone for days while out fishing. Rin decided to try and become an Olympic swimmer because he believes that by following this path, he will be able to see his father's face.[9] Rin puts his swimming goggles on in the same way his father did (by pulling the strap back and letting it snap back onto the back of his swim cap). Rin joined the Iwatobi Swimming Club prior to leaving for Australia because that was his father's old club, where his father and his teammates had won the relay. Rin wanted to make a team and win the relay to emulate his father as he started down the path of becoming an Olympic swimmer.

Elementary: Junior High: In elementary school, Rin was in the same swimming team along with Haruka, Makoto and Nagisa. After they won a tournament, Rin then went abroad to Australia to attend a swimming school.

-Like all swimmers associated with the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club, Rin has a female name.

-Rin is the type of person who cannot sleep without his pillow.

-Haruka stated that Rin accidentally called his coach mom during elementary school.

-Gou has admitted that Rin shaves his body hair to reduce water resistance.

-Rin likes eating meat and spicy foods while he doesn't particularly like sweet foods.

-Rin's best subjects are English and Math, while he's bad at Literature and Old Japanese.

-Rin's best stroke is the butterfly, but his obsession with beating Haruka, who only swims freestyle, leads him to focusing on that stroke and whatever distance Haruka is swimming in competition only.

Its 6am and the clock alarms. Makato turns over with a groan but hops up anyway. He reaches over and shuts the clock off and starts to yawn and stretch. He gets up and makes his way over to his closet pulling out a shirt and pants and finally grabs his signature green tie out of the top draw. He throws the clothes on the bed and goes down the hall to wake up Ren and Ran. He knocks on their door stating "Ren Ran time to get up for school. I hope you completed your homework." He hears grumbles and heads to the kitchen to start breakfast. While in the kitchen he starts to think about Haru and how he never changes. It was heart warming actually. He chuckled to himself knowing he'd be seeing him soon and continued making breakfast.

I groggily woke up to Niitori's annoying voice."Jeezus.. can you ever say anything than screech "Rin-sepai!Rin-senpai!", I growled in my head, mocking his annoying voice. I closed my eyes and several seconds later,i re-opened them, quickly shooting out of bed and got dressed."Later", i said as i almost ran out the door, without looking at Niitori. "how could i be so stupid, today was a very special day and i completely forgot!" I ran past some of the other swimmers without saying anything and out of Samezuka Academy. I kept running, my only goal in mind at the moment to meet Rin and Haru to our special place we always go to when we were kids. I had planned to confess to both of them, and i kept practicing on what i was going to say since last night, making me feel slightly groggy so i had to chug down an energy drink and now here i am. I stopped at a convenience store on my way and bought a all-mackerel bento for Haru and and pork bento for Makoto. I know buying bentos for them was stupid, especially if i made or bought their own, but its the thought that counts.

Haruka woke up as always when the morning came. He looked at the sun shining! His eyes was already distracted by the beautiful color of the sunrise but not more than something else. He felt like that he missed water more than ever. He stood up from his bed and then took off his pajamas and wore his back swimsuit with a few purple lines on it. He walked to the bathroom and then opened the water, let it flow down in the tub and to fill it. When it was full enough. He closed it and starred at the beautiful liquid. He felt like that he can`t take it anymore though he was hungry and it was already time to be ready and go to school! He went inside the bath and let his legs to get used to be wet and then he let out a sigh and let the other parts of his body inside the water. It was a but cold but he didn`t really care! He felt great and free just be in such a small limit of water but he wanted to swim soon. He hoped that the weather goes hot soon so the he could swim! He felt like that he was running out of time but he knew that it was fine, he felt like that Makoto was going to catch him again as always.

Makato looked at the clock and started shooing the kids out of the door saying "hurry guys you don't want to be late. Have a good day". He waves to the kids and starts walking the familiar path to Haru's house. Smiling at the the thought he grabs his phone to text Rin. Its been a couple of days since they have spoken. But that was due to him being nervous around them both. Lately thats all he has been able to think about, Rin and Haru. He really doesn't understand it but he wouldn't have any other way either. Before he turned the corner he quickly shoots Rin a text. "Hey hope everything is good see you soon -mako-". By the time he arrived at Haru's he sent it and knocked on the door.

I just got a message from Makoto saying" Hey, hope everything is good, see you soon-mako-. I squealed in my head like a little girl as I sent a quick reply. I nervously stood by under the special place, the tree we always made our special memories under it. I crouched down to see the writing of Makoto's, Haru's, and my initials engraved on the red brick. m+r+h=forever was slightly faded from old age, but still visible to read. I traced over the word engraved on Haru's brick, Free, with my finger and chuckling softly at the fact that he hasn't changed at all. I thought the same thing as I traced the drawing of a baby orca on Makoto's brick. I felt jittery all of a sudden, glancing every now and then to see if they had come. I calmed my nerves by reciting my confession in my head to pass the time

Haruka did actually heard the door knocking. He didn`t really want to stand up all the way and open the door since he knew that Makoto would come in himself! He sighed and took a deep breath and went under the water. He really loved the way water looked below. He just wanted to swim forward but he knew that he was going hit his head to the other side of the tub so he fast and then shook his head a few times so that his hair would dry up a bit. Starting to play with the water inside, started to think about Rin. He was glad that he was alright now and he was trying his best in Samezuka Academy. He seemed to get even closer to them. After he showed him the side he have never seem before. He raised his hand up and splashed the water away, hoped that this moment would not finish so soon though he knew that Makoto was going to appear soon and starting to yell that they were late, Nagisa and Rei were waiting for them!

Makato sighed and thought to himself "he must be under the water again". He reached for the knob and unlocked the door walking right in. Knowing exactly where to go he headed straight for the bathroom. He stood in the entry way and watched for a bit. Haru was always at ease when he was in or near water. It was so beautiful to see. He was glad he was one of the few that got to see that side. Waking up fro the semi day dream he called to Haru. "Morning Haru come on out we're going to be late. Everyone is waiting for us."

I was still standing under the tree, slightly pissed that they were this late, " Did they forget what day it was?", I said to myself, panicking. I snapped my neck to the entrance, but there was still no sign of them. I grunted in irritation and slumped my shoulders sadly," They completely forgot, How could they forget, we swore ourselves that we won't forget about our special place, but i see now Mako and Haru doesn't care about vows or promise. We were in high school know so of course they would think it childish to keep such a thing. Guess they didn't love me as much as I loved them. My heart tore in two as I hesitantly threw out the bentos i bought for them in a trashcan, and slowly heading back to Sumezuka, hands deep in my pockets and scuffing my feet with each step.

Haru looked at the other and hid a half of his face under the water like that he didn`t want get out of bed but he knew that he couldn`t help it. He got out of the water and then out of the tub. "It`s strange, you learned that you don`t have to call me with chan?" He said as he walked to the kitchen and wore his apron. "I`m about to cook mackerel now for breakfast, then I am going to get ready!" He said as he started cooking, he was a bit fun with an apron on his swimsuit. He suddenly reminded something and looked at the other. "Weren`t we supposed to see Rin today?" He mumbled and then walked to his phone. "He is probably mad! He said inside and called the other, still cooking his fish, h glanced at Makoto. "Call Rei and Nagisa, tell them to go o first, we should see Rin." He hoped that Rin would answer his phone.

Makato inwardly cursed. How could he forget they were to meet. He feels stupid and guilty and grabs the phone to call rei and nagisa. During the phone call he tells them to go ahead and that they'll see them in class. They asked if there was anything they could do? Makato smiled and said "thanks but no. Its something Haru and I have to do" and hung up. He turns to Haru. "Hey Haru chan can you skip the mackerel today? I'll get you a mackeral bento after we see Rin. This is too important to let rest. Imagine how upset he is. Did he answer"?

Rin was still walking,hunched over and eyes down-cast, grumbling on how ungrateful those two were. Several minutes later, he made it back to Samezuka, ignoring concerned voices and made a beeline to my dorm. Fortunately, Niitorii wasn't there to interrogate him and he plopped himself on the bed, pulling the sheets over him. He wanted to go to Haru's house, and he's pretty sure that Makoto was going to be there, and tell them off, but he couldn't stay mad at them. He loved them too damn much not to. And It's partially his fault for not saying anything about it, thinking the same way he thought.

Haruka sighed and then shook his head. "He didn`t, okay but just since it`s a special day for us, I call him again!" He asked in a calm voice as always and then went to his room and opened his closet, wearing his uniform, as always with no stress and with a cool expression, his body form was truly sexy and that was what Gou really admired! He walked back to Makoto and then grabbed his hand. "Let`s go fast, I don`t really to see Rin cry again!" He said as he wore his shoes and left his place, calling the pinked hair boy but this me leaving a message! "Rin, it`s me, we are coming to the usual place, please wait there for us!"

Makato grabs hold of Haru's hand and took off running with. He can't believe they forgot. While running he starts to speak. "You know we're gonna have to make it up to him. You know he's probably hurt and pissed off at us." Releasing Haru's hand he grabs his phone and dials Rin again and leaves a voice mail "Rin please pick up. We're on the way please. . We're sorry. " Makato hung up and sighed." As they approached their space he started looking around and noticrd the thtoen bentos on the ground. "He's really upset Haru".

I still laid in my bed, facing the ceiling". " I wish this day would end", I sighed, exasperated. Just then, my phone went off and it was playing the ringtone I chose for Makoto's number. I purposely let it go to voicemail and once it went to voicemail, I could hear his apologetic voice,"Rin, please pick up. We're on the way, please...we're sorry", the voicemail ended and I almost felt really bad at what I did, just hearing his voice was enough, anyway. I ran out the door, hoping I can find them.

Haruka rushed to the place. It was unusual of him to look nervous and walk fast to somewhere other an a pool or sea. He was almost there, his hands was holding Makoto`s and pulling him with him to the tree of the kindergarten. They were there but there was no sign of Rin. Haruka was mad at himself and cursed himself, he sat of his knees and buried his face into them. "Rin...please! I`m sorry!" He mumbled as he was close to cry but he didn`t teared. He actually cried in the inside, hoped that Rin would come.

Makato sighed as he saw Haru upset and went to comfort him. He knelt next to him pulling him in his arms hugging him and kissing the top of his head. "Speaking into his hair he asked "do you want to wait or should we go or even maybe go to his dorm?" While he was holding Haru he was trying to keep his emotions in check for haru although he wanted to cry and Haru looked like he was seconds from it. He sighed again and started rocking Haru back and forth while he asked him again. "What should we do"?

I ran past people that gave me glares and strange looks as I bumped accidentally into them and not apologizing. i didn't have time to apologize, the only people I planned to apologize were Mako and Haru. I ran up to Haru's house, vigorously ringing the doorbell but heard nothing several seconds later. "Shit, where could they be?!", as I walked away from the street to his house and turned the corner again. "Don't tell me they're waiting for me at the place? So they did remember!", I almost skipped in glee while I was running, but stopped when I was about to trip over a crack. I saw the top of the tree. " Hold on Mako,Haru, I'm coming".

Haruka heard a familiar voice and looked up and saw Rin coming to them. He felt relaxed and happy as he stood up and ran to the other, held him tightly. The last time, when they swam in a relay together, before that Rin seemed very bad and sad but Haru didn`t want to. He suddenly jumped on the other and held him tightly. "Thank god!" After a while, he pulled away and then smiled gently."Thank god that you are alright! Sorry that we forgot today and how special it was!" He said as he looked back at Makto and then walked to him, pulling Rin with him, he stood next to Makoto. "So, do you want to tell us something, Rin? Anything is fine, we are here to listen to it!"

Makato was relieved that Rin showed. He let out a sigh if relief but was still trying to gauge his mood. He heard Haru say there would listen if he had anything to say. It was true if he wanted to scream and curse at them he understands. It would upset him but he would deal with it because it was Rin. He looked over at Rin when Haru finished talking grabbing his other and lacing his fingers with Rin's. "Please Rin forgive us. We didn't mean to forget. We're really sorry." Feeling worse than he did a few seconds ago Makato's eyes start to water and he grabs Rin into a tight embrace.

Rin tried to catch his breath when he stopped in front of Haru and Makoto. "I'm glad that you're both here". He looked at Haru and Makoto, voice lost for a second as Rin gazed at their concerned faces, thinking again why he fell in love with them in the first place, "I'm sorry for overreacting, so you didn't forget, after all, huh? Rin scratched the back of my head awkwardly. Then, Rin remembered what Haru asked me and got all silent. Rin took a deep breath and got all serious. "I do have something to tell you two, something I haven't had the guts to say before now and I hope you say yes...I love you", Rin exhaled, looking at them expectantly, waiting for their responses.

Haruka suddenly was surprised by hearing the other spoke. His bag fell from his shoulders and it was dropped and collapsed on the floor. He gulped as he walked closer to him and then blinked. "What? Really, Rin!" He said and smiled gently. He slowly moved his hand to his hair and stroked it. "You are so cute! Isn`t it a bit strange that you`ve fallen for us both?" He laughed and then held the other tightly as he wrapped his arms around his friends and then kissed them on the cheek, as usual with no expression on his face. He smiled at the other and then looked over Makoto. "What would you think, Makoto?" He paused and thought himself. "Let me think about it a bit Rin, I told you my answer tonight!" He managed a smile and then looked over the tree.

Makato gulps as hus nerves were in full force. He had no idea Rin and Haru felt the same. He cleared his throat and said "well since we are being completely honest.. I-i love you both too. For quite awhile now." When he spoke his last words he abruptly closed his mouth and sighed. A weight has been lifted. He grabbed each of their hands and looked them directly in the eyes. "I love you please lets all be together. We can figure out the details later but I need you both in my life".
