Appearance: Makoto is a tall young man with short, olive green hair and droopy green eyes. His usual school uniform consists of light brown trousers, a white shirt with a green necktie, dark gray unbuttoned blazer and orange sneakers. During the spring and summer, he also wears his summer uniform that consists of gray trousers, a white shirt with a dark gray collar, the green dotted necktie and the orange sneakers.

While swimming, he wears black long leg swim pants that have green patterns on them. He's seen wearing black framed glasses once, but it's not said whether he really needs them or not.

Personality: Makoto is a nice and considerate guy, who is always concerned about his friends' welfare. Due to his caring personality, he is often seen with a gentle smile on his face. However, he is rather weak-hearted and can get scared easily, as shown when he appeared terrified of the possibility that their old Swimming Club may be haunted. When he gets scared he tends to hide behind Haruka or cling to him in some way.

Makoto also seems to be one of the more sensible people in the group and can get a bit worn out from his friends' peculiar antics and mannerisms. He is the one usually restraining Haruka from randomly stripping or diving into fish tanks.

Makoto and Haruka have been together for so long that Makoto is able to read Haru's mind. He is also shown to be slightly manipulative, often using Haruka's love of water to his advantage to convince Haruka to do what he wants. It was also shown that Haruka dislikes it when people use his first name, but Makoto always somehow manages to win the argument and calls him 'Haru'.

Childhood:Makoto and Haruka have been friends since at least kindergarten. It was in kindergarten that Haruka started calling Makoto by his first name and Makoto calling Haruka "Haru-chan". It was Makoto who wanted to join the Iwatobi Swimming Club when they were children and Haru tagged along with him. Due to the length of time Makoto and Haruka have been friends, Makoto can usually guess what Haruka is thinking and vice-versa, resulting in the both of them being able to hold wordless conversations.

When Makoto was young, he would visit a small fishing harbor. At the fishing harbor, there was a nice old fisherman that would sometimes play with Makoto. During the summer, at the festival near the harbor, Makoto wanted to scoop for fish but already used up all his allowance. The fisherman gave him two goldfish to make him feel better. Later that summer, there was a big typhoon and the fisherman's boat sank. Many people drowned including the old fisherman. Later when the two goldfish died, he made a grave, which is now a precious memory to him, for them, in which he changes the flowers everyday. Because of this experience he is afraid of the ocean.

Elementary: As a child, Makoto used to swim the breaststroke and usually won the 100m breaststroke events against Rin but would lose the 50m breaststroke against him. It was when he teamed-up with Rin, Nagisa Hazuki and Haruka for the relay in elementary school that Makoto switched to backstroke and found that he was more comfortable with the stroke and has since specialized in the backstroke.

Junior High: In Iwatobi Junior High School, Makoto was known as "the big kid from class 2" because of his good physique and because of it, Kisumi Shigino asked him to join Iwatobi Junior High's basketball team after seeing him play during one of the P.E. classes class 1 and class 2 had together. One day before their practice at Iwatobi Swimming Club, Makoto and Haruka ran into a black stray dog. Makoto liked it but Haruka told him not to pay attention to it because it will follow him around. Even though Makoto made sure not to look at it, the dog followed them and despite Nagisa's assumptions that the dog is attached to Haruka, it was in fact attached to Makoto. It stayed down the stone stairs near Haruka and Makoto's house, but Makoto couldn't keep it because his mom wouldn't stop sneezing it if was near her. Haruka then told Makoto he would keep the dog if it stayed down the stone stairs when they come back home from school.

Trivia:

-Like all members of the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club, Makoto has a female name.

-Despite being on the swim team, Makoto is afraid of the ocean.[3] However, in the High☆Speed!, Makoto is not only afraid of the ocean, but the water in general.

-Makoto has been described as the wishy-washy type by Haruka, because he is too nice and was unable to decide which club member would be his boyfriend if he were a girl.

-Makoto and Haruka appear to have a game that consists of Makoto guessing what Haruka is thinking.

-According to Free! TV Animation Guidebook:

-Makoto likes eating green curry and chocolate.

-Makoto's best subject is Literature, while he's bad at English and Art.

-Makoto likes physical activity and manual labor.

-Makoto was voted Sexiest Anime Man of 2013 by winning over Haru Yoshida from Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun with 24861 votes.

-Makoto has won the Muscle Contest held at the renewed Iwatobi Swimming Club, where Gou was one of the judges. However, the one Gou gave the most points was Rin.

-Makoto's voice actor, Tatsuhisa Suzuki, is the vocalist for OLDCODEX, the band which performed the opening themes for both seasons of Free!, "Rage on" and "Dried Up Youthful Fame".

Appearance: Haruka is a tall, young man with short, straight black hair and blue eyes. He always retains serious expression on his face and never seems to show any kind of emotion. He seems to wear his swimming jammers everywhere. As pointed out by members of the swim team on multiple occasions, all of his swimsuits look virtually the same (they are all black swim jammers, but with slightly different patterns of violet), yet he claims they all fit differently.

His typical school uniform consists of light-brown trousers, a white shirt with a green necktie, a dark gray unbuttoned blazer and blue sneakers. During the spring and summer, he would wear his summer uniform, which consists of gray trousers, a white shirt with a dark gray collar, a green dotted necktie and blue sneakers.

Personality: Haruka is a strong and quiet person who loves water. He is a taciturn and reserved individual. His strength lies in his confidence in his decisions. Up until Rin beat him their swim race, Haruka never questioned his reasons for swimming.

Haruka is very protective towards his friends, especially Makoto. During the team's summer training, Makoto relived his childhood nightmare in the ocean and felt compelled to tell his team the truth about his fear when the subject was brought up. Immediately sensing Makoto's hesitation, Haruka commanded Rei to drop the question.

Haruka also deeply values his friendship with Rin. Afraid that he had hurt Rin when Rin lost to him in a swimming race when they were little, Haruka had given up on swimming competitively just to guarantee Rin's victory the next time they were to race. This willingness to compete was gradually restored, however, when Rin challenged him a number of times. He was extremely devastated when he had overheard that Rin wanted to abandon swimming, as he wished desperately to be able to swim with Rin again. Haruka demonstrates his great determination, through his efforts to revive Rin's passion by seeking him out and offering consolation before the relay race.

Haruka's attraction to water makes him a very comical person; he will swim anywhere and in anything with water (including a fish tank). His style captivates many others, and he has a powerful fixation towards freestyle swimming in particular.

Childhood: Haruka had been friends with Makoto ever since they were very young. One day, at the playground near their homes, Makoto asked Haruka to join the swimming club with him, but Haruka immediately refused, saying it's "too much trouble". When Makoto said he won't join as well and was asked why not, Makoto said that there was no point in joining if Haruka wasn't with him. Makoto eventually got Haruka to jointhe club with him and since then, they were the members of Iwatobi Swimming Club.

Junior High: Starting his junior high school life, Haruka wasn't intending to do club activities at all because he didn't like that they would cut his swimming time down. He didn't see the point of doing anything other than swimming and time spent in P.E. classes doing sports was enough for him. On the first day of school, Asahi approached Haruka and said, "You look like the type of guy with no friends," therefore having a one-sided friendship with him. Haruka didn't seem to like Asahi and when he asked him to call him "Haru" like Makoto does, he said that he could, but just because he did not want Asahi to follow him around more.

Trivia:

-Like all members of the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club, Haruka has a female name.

-He bathes with his swimming trunks on.

-Haruka will go anywhere as long as there's a body of water that he can get into.

-Haruka has exceptionally great art skills, such as drawing and wood carving.

-The year before, Haruka had been one of 987 entries entered in the Iwatobi Town mascot contest. His entry was named Tobimaru-kun. According to Gou, it wasn't very cute.

-He has a certain romantic attraction to water.

-Rin stated that Haruka has said "Tadaima" (ただいま), which means "I'm home", upon arriving to their swimming club during elementary school.

-If Haruka was a girl and he had to date one of the boys from the Iwatobi Swimming Club, he would choose Makoto because it was the easiest choice. However, his choice was quickly changed to Nagisa when the first year promised to cook him mackerel for breakfast every morning.

-Rei states that Haruka's decisions all center around mackerel.

-Haruka and Makoto appear to have a game that consists of Makoto guessing what Haruka is thinking.

-Haruka once wore a girl's swimsuit in elementary school. Nagisa borrowed his trunks because the blonde's sister swapped out his swimsuit for a girl's one. Haruka claims that he had no recollection of this memory, but shows that he does at the end of the track.

-Haruka's best subjects are Home Economics and Art, while he's bad at English.

Appearance: Rin is a tall young man with semi-long, maroon colored hair. He has red eyes and shark-like teeth. His winter and fall school uniform consists of white trousers, a white buttoned up jacket with a black t-shirt underneath it and black shoes. In the spring his uniform consists of a black polo shirt with a pink collar, as well as a pair of white pants and black shoes. His school bag is a red messenger bag with the word "shark" printed on the outside.

While swimming, he wears black jammers which have red markings trailing along the length of his outer legs and thighs, as well as a pair of dark blue tinted goggles.

Personality: When he was young, Rin showed a lot of passion and competitiveness for swimming, as well as an interest in teamwork.[4] After years passed, his ideals about swimming drastically changed. He does not care that much about the trophy they won during their elementary days.

As the Iwatobi High School Swim Club continues to practice and have fun together, Rin often times catches glimpses of them during their practices and is notably morose when he sees how happy they are together while he stands there alone. The teenager aspires to make his father's dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer come true and has detached himself from everyone while working toward that particular goal.[9] At times, Rin displays a softer side, as he is shown to still harbor concern for his friends' well-being and he acts like a mentor toward his younger sister Gou and teammate Nitori. Rin is conflicted emotionally, but his pride as a swimmer is used to mask his insecurities.

Childhood: Rin's father died when Rin was very young; his father was a swimmer who had dreamed of going to the Olympics but had to give-up his goal and become a fisherman. Due to a tragic incident (a storm), his father drowned three kilometers off the coast along with the rest of his crew. Rin stated that he has very few memories of his father and cannot even recall what his father looked like, as his father would be gone for days while out fishing. Rin decided to try and become an Olympic swimmer because he believes that by following this path, he will be able to see his father's face.[9] Rin puts his swimming goggles on in the same way his father did (by pulling the strap back and letting it snap back onto the back of his swim cap). Rin joined the Iwatobi Swimming Club prior to leaving for Australia because that was his father's old club, where his father and his teammates had won the relay. Rin wanted to make a team and win the relay to emulate his father as he started down the path of becoming an Olympic swimmer.

Elementary: Junior High: In elementary school, Rin was in the same swimming team along with Haruka, Makoto and Nagisa. After they won a tournament, Rin then went abroad to Australia to attend a swimming school.

-Like all swimmers associated with the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club, Rin has a female name.

-Rin is the type of person who cannot sleep without his pillow.

-Haruka stated that Rin accidentally called his coach mom during elementary school.

-Gou has admitted that Rin shaves his body hair to reduce water resistance.

-Rin likes eating meat and spicy foods while he doesn't particularly like sweet foods.

-Rin's best subjects are English and Math, while he's bad at Literature and Old Japanese.

-Rin likes sports that he's good at.

-Rin's best stroke is the butterfly, but his obsession with beating Haruka, who only swims freestyle, leads him to focusing on that stroke and whatever distance Haruka is swimming in competition only.

While sitting upon his bed, Rin held his phone up to his face. A picture of his precious boyfriend Haruka was his screensaver. He smiled a it just at the thought of spending time with him today. His eyes dart towards the clock. "Only one more hour left. I better get ready to go see my beloved." he says to himself as he sat up. He went to shower and then got dressed. The entire time thinking of seeing Haruka. In the back of his mind he wanted to take the other out on a date. It would be their first one since they started going out. Rin wonders where would be special enough to take Haru.

Makoto was so excited about today so he got up early to be prepared, he knew that he had an hour so there was no way to rush but thinking of being late or not good at their first date might make Haruka angry. So he dressed up fast and left the room. Though Haruka`s place was right next to his, they decided to see each other at the aquarium. He knew it was the place place that he invited Haruka to since there was all about water and fish. Makoto was sure that they would have a lot of fun. He got to the place, waiting for the black haired. He wads even thinking off giving him a kiss when they were going back.

Haru sinked his body on his bathtub as usual he did in the morning, yeah water never could be separated from this black-haired male. He bring his head up and exhaled deep air because he already sank his body for a couple of minutes. His blue eyes looked at his bathtub water and sighed as remembering about his date with Makoto today at the aquarium but the one thing he though was, his condition now. He was dating both of his best friend, Rin and Makoto. He know it was disaster thing but he couldn't ignore both of them so he ended up accepted two of his best friend's feeling though he was indeed had a feeling too with the two. With dragged step, Haru get out from his beloved bathtub and dried himself, dressed up quickly so he could goes to the place that Makoto decided or he will going too late though he could meet with the green eyes male because their house really close.

Just as he began to leave, Rin got a brilliant idea in his mind. He quickly calls Haruka. Since he was going to meet up with him anyway he was sure he would answer. To be on the safe side, Rin sent a quick message to Haru as well. He told him they would meet up at the aquarium entrance. He knew Haru was deeply fond of mackerel and water. So this felt like the perfect plan for a first date. Rin grins as he caught the first train towards the aquarium.

Makoto was already there. He took a taxi as he went there. He actually got there before Rin and he waited a bit at the entrance but later thought of buying something for Haruka until hew came. He looked over the shopping market and found a very beautiful bracelet with shells and blue stones. He payed for it and left the shop as he pulled out his phone and messaged the other. "Hey, Haru! I'm already here at the aquarium so I was wondering if you are still in the house or on the way here! I'm waiting for you love and I can't wait to see your beautiful eyes again."

The train that Haru riding was already stopped then he got out of the train, didn't realize his phone bugging on his pocket. But as he walked toward the aquarium, he put his phone and stopped his step once he saw one miscall and two message from both of his boyfriend. 'Rin? he miscalled me?' he mumbled then start to read the message. Though his face didn't show anything, his mind started to chaostic, why Rin asking him to have a date at the same time with his date with Makoto and the most dangerous thing was the place! it was aquarium too. Haru's forehead start to sweating, he confused what to do with this. The black-haired male didn't want to disappointed Makoto but he also didn't want Rin felt the same. Haru still walked toward the aquarium and tried to think up this problem.

Rin had arrived shortly after Makoto had walked away. So he didn't notice the other male was there. He sat upon a bench by the entrance of the aquarium. He looked around for Haru. His heart on his sleeves as he wanted this date to be very fun and special. He was even thinking of sharing a kiss with Haru by the dolphin tank. Since he always felt the other reminded him of one. He couldn't think clearly as his mind clouded with thoughts of Haruka. He was sure nothing could go wrong today.

Makoto had already missed the voice of his neighbor that he always hear. Maybe because it was not a normal talking anymore like they were only friends. He was happy the Haruka agreed to go out with him and now they were a couple and he was his boyfriend, he could add some sweet romantic words during talking with him over the phone and even stands close to him, take his hands and whatever. He pulled out his phone and called the black haired, waiting for his reply. Hewas impatient in seeing him now.

Haru's mind couldn't find any idea to solve his problem, actually he wanted to yelled out loud but he couldn't do that on this crowded place. At the moment like this, the black-haired male just wanted to swimming on the pool and his mind could clear a bit. A couple of minutes later Haru reached the aquarium and saw Rin sat on one of the benches in front of the aquarium, at the same time his phone buzzing on his pocket. When he saw the caller, he bit his bottom lips because the caller was Makoto. He know that the green head impatience about their date and he decided to pick up the phone. "h-hallo, Makoto.." he answered with uneasy tone while his head still tried to find the best solution of this.

Rin was waiting silently as he glanced at his phone. He noticed the time and it was getting close to when he should meet up with Haruka. This worried him since he honestly wanted to go out on this date. He decides to call him but just as he was he noticed Haruka approaching the entrance. He stood up and waved at the other. Something caught his attention as he noticed Haru on his phone. He wonders who it was.

Makoto was happy that he heard the other`s voice over the phone, it made him to start walking to the entrance. "Hello Haru, I have already missed you though we met last night, where are you? Are you here? I'm waiting for you and I guess I can't be more patient. He looked around for him.

Haru mind's completely distracted as heard Makoto's voice on the phone, it kinda calm him down but as his eyes caught a sight of Rin on the entrance he know that today won't be his date anymore. "I'm at the entrance, Makoto.." he paused and sighs softly. "Makoto―" he couldn't finished his words because Rin already waved at him. This really made the black headed male completely dilemma and guilty.

Rin walked over to Haruka with a grin on his face. He was very happy about this. His first date with his boyfriend and on such a lovely day as well. He stood beside him waiting for Haru to finish his phone call. He wasn't trying to eavesdrop but he was sure he heard Haru mention Makoto's name. He knew the two were best friends. So he didn't think anything weird about him talking with the other male. Little did Rin know how worried he should have been.

Makotop saw Haruka and blushed brightly. He wanted to rush to him and hug him out of happiness though as he raise up his hand to wave, he saw a familiar person running to the blue eyed first. Impossible ! It was Rin who was now standing next to Haruka...What was happening there? Did he run to him like that or....? He didn't know himself, he walked to the two and smiled faintly. "Hello..."

A couple of sweat run down from Haru's forehead at the moment Makoto walked toward him and Rin. He tried his best not to nervous and make his face a bit cheer up. "Hi Makoto.. umm I-I think I want to told you something.. you too Rin.." he said as looked at both of his boyfriend and yes, he already decided to tell the two about the situation though he know the two of them will got angry with him and he was ready for it. "I think we can talk at the quiet place, come on follow me.." he stated simply then make his way toward the park that quiet and not much people on it.

Rin glanced to the side as he saw Makoto walking towards them. He was now feeling confused as to why the other male was here. He didn't wish to jump to conclusions as just looked towards Haruka. Before he could ask or say anything, the blue eyes, said for them both to follow him. Rin nods following behind Haru and glancing at Makoto. With things as they were he really hopes this wasn't a breakup idea of Haru's.

Makoto was a bit surprised, he glanced back at Rin when he did as he became a bit suspicious. What did the black haired wanted to talk about. He followed the boy to see what's happening, though some kind of feeling was telling him the most possibility, he couldn't believe it. He inhale and exhaled and tried to be positive. Maybe they just ran to each other like that so if that was true why Haruka didn't seem surprised.

Haru reached the park in a couple second later then faced the two males in front of him, confused about what will he said first. Actually he didn't want this happen but god seems had another plan for the three of them. All he want was disappear from this world, he didn't want to see the two of his boyfriend got sad because of him. "Rin, Makoto.. sorry, I was lying with both of you.. I couldn't reject both of you, sorry.." he said almost whispered with his gaze on the ground, didn't dare to look at the two and he know that his words must confused Rin and Makoto but he couldn't think other best word again.

Rin couldn't stop looking at Makoto and then Haruka. It all made no sense to him. This had to be some misunderstanding that happened. He waited to hear with his boyfriend had to say. "Haru, what do you mean you lied? You could reject us...? Wait a minute! Haru are you dating Makoto as well as me...!?!" he asked raising his voice a little. He didn't expect this to be what was going on. "How could you Haru!? I trusted you. So was it a lie when you said I was only yours?" he asked tears suddenly on the verge of falling from his eyes. Rin slowly stepped back. "I guess I should have known. It's always Makoto. He knows Haru best. He's a lot closer to Haru. I never stood a chance." he said overreacting just a bit

Makoto waited to the other to tel them what was happening and made Makoto`s heart to skip a bit. He was just starring at Haruka, unable to say anything, or complain... He woke up from thinking inside when Rin started to talk and yell at th blue eyed. Actually he felt as hurt as the pink haired. Haruka told him the same thing that said to Rin but he could kinda understand why he did that. He was wise enough to understand, probably didn't want to hurt them but still...He felt sorry for the shark teeth after he talked the last words and looked at him worryingly. "That's not true, it's not like that I knew it. I was just like you..." He looked away. "Actually, I think it's the opposite since I was always jealous of Rin when he swims with Haru."

Haru's blue eyes widen in surprise way and his body tensed up at the moment he heard Rin yelled out his disappointed toward him. He bit his lips as he though what will he say to Rin but when he wanted to open his mouth, Makoto already tried to calm Rin down. Yeah, Haru always know that Makoto could take this thing up because he always wise about anything but he couldn't blame to Rin because he have right to mad with him. The black haired male glanced at Makoto then at Rin who stepped back. "I know, Rin. I was wrong.. I just, I couldn't reject both of you cause I like you two.." he looked at Rin. "Rin, you know that I always didn't want to lose from you and I really enjoyed the time when we swim together.." then he gazed at Makoto. "..and Makoto, I always like your wise character and we always had time together too. I know I was egoist but I couldn't let both of you! I love you, Rin, Makoto.." now this was Haru's turn to yelled out his feeling though he embarrassed with face dark red cause he rarely show his expression but it's different when it related to the two male in front of him.

Rin calmed down a bit hearing Makoto. "You were jealous of me? That's odd to hear since you both swim on the same team." he said sighing a bit. He glanced at Haru after the other got a bit expressive. "I suppose I can't stay mad at you. I'm hurt Haru but your reason makes some sense. Also if it had to be anyone I guess Makoto is fine. He's a good guy after all." he said trying to accept all of this without going over the top. Rin walked over to Haru and took hold of his hand. "Anyway, now that this is out you better not have any more secrets Haruka. Now I came all this way to take you out on a date and I plan to do just that. Makoto can come too" he said looking to the side a bit.

Makoto glanced at Rin all the time he was talking though he didn't really agree with the threesome date. He looked away and smiled faintly as he shook his head. "You guys go and have fun, I know that there is nothing that I can blame you for Haruka but still you have to choose one of us and until then. I can't go on a date or anything else with you, if you are going to accept me then I['ll be your boyfriend but if not, we are going to be just just before." He turned around. "So goodbye guys!" He looked down as his fake expression changed, he was really sad but couldn't help anything.

He just can't believe that Rin could take this confusing situation and happy cause the other seems didn't mind too much about it. But his happiness wasn't long enough at the moment Makoto told him he still doubt about this relationship and gasped while the green haired male start to walk away which made him chase Makoto and hold his hands.
