Appearance: Rin is a tall young man with semi-long, maroon colored hair. He has red eyes and shark-like teeth. His winter and fall school uniform consists of white trousers, a white buttoned up jacket with a black t-shirt underneath it and black shoes. In the spring his uniform consists of a black polo shirt with a pink collar, as well as a pair of white pants and black shoes. His school bag is a red messenger bag with the word "shark" printed on the outside.

While swimming, he wears black jammers which have red markings trailing along the length of his outer legs and thighs, as well as a pair of dark blue tinted goggles.

Personality: When he was young, Rin showed a lot of passion and competitiveness for swimming, as well as an interest in teamwork.[4] After years passed, his ideals about swimming drastically changed. He does not care that much about the trophy they won during their elementary days.

As the Iwatobi High School Swim Club continues to practice and have fun together, Rin often times catches glimpses of them during their practices and is notably morose when he sees how happy they are together while he stands there alone. The teenager aspires to make his father's dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer come true and has detached himself from everyone while working toward that particular goal.[9] At times, Rin displays a softer side, as he is shown to still harbor concern for his friends' well-being and he acts like a mentor toward his younger sister Gou and teammate Nitori. Rin is conflicted emotionally, but his pride as a swimmer is used to mask his insecurities.

Childhood: Rin's father died when Rin was very young; his father was a swimmer who had dreamed of going to the Olympics but had to give-up his goal and become a fisherman. Due to a tragic incident (a storm), his father drowned three kilometers off the coast along with the rest of his crew. Rin stated that he has very few memories of his father and cannot even recall what his father looked like, as his father would be gone for days while out fishing. Rin decided to try and become an Olympic swimmer because he believes that by following this path, he will be able to see his father's face.[9] Rin puts his swimming goggles on in the same way his father did (by pulling the strap back and letting it snap back onto the back of his swim cap). Rin joined the Iwatobi Swimming Club prior to leaving for Australia because that was his father's old club, where his father and his teammates had won the relay. Rin wanted to make a team and win the relay to emulate his father as he started down the path of becoming an Olympic swimmer.

Elementary: Junior High: In elementary school, Rin was in the same swimming team along with Haruka, Makoto and Nagisa. After they won a tournament, Rin then went abroad to Australia to attend a swimming school.

Trivia:

-Like all swimmers associated with the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club, Rin has a female name.

-Rin is the type of person who cannot sleep without his pillow.

-Haruka stated that Rin accidentally called his coach mom during elementary school.

-Gou has admitted that Rin shaves his body hair to reduce water resistance.

-Rin likes eating meat and spicy foods while he doesn't particularly like sweet foods.

-Rin's best subjects are English and Math, while he's bad at Literature and Old Japanese.

-Rin likes sports that he's good at.

-Rin's best stroke is the butterfly, but his obsession with beating Haruka, who only swims freestyle, leads him to focusing on that stroke and whatever distance Haruka is swimming in competition only.

Appearance: Makoto is a tall young man with short, olive green hair and droopy green eyes. His usual school uniform consists of light brown trousers, a white shirt with a green necktie, dark gray unbuttoned blazer and orange sneakers. During the spring and summer, he also wears his summer uniform that consists of gray trousers, a white shirt with a dark gray collar, the green dotted necktie and the orange sneakers.

While swimming, he wears black long leg swim pants that have green patterns on them. He's seen wearing black framed glasses once, but it's not said whether he really needs them or not.

Personality: Makoto is a nice and considerate guy, who is always concerned about his friends' welfare. Due to his caring personality, he is often seen with a gentle smile on his face. However, he is rather weak-hearted and can get scared easily, as shown when he appeared terrified of the possibility that their old Swimming Club may be haunted. When he gets scared he tends to hide behind Haruka or cling to him in some way.

Makoto also seems to be one of the more sensible people in the group and can get a bit worn out from his friends' peculiar antics and mannerisms. He is the one usually restraining Haruka from randomly stripping or diving into fish tanks.

Makoto and Haruka have been together for so long that Makoto is able to read Haru's mind. He is also shown to be slightly manipulative, often using Haruka's love of water to his advantage to convince Haruka to do what he wants. It was also shown that Haruka dislikes it when people use his first name, but Makoto always somehow manages to win the argument and calls him 'Haru'.

Childhood:Makoto and Haruka have been friends since at least kindergarten. It was in kindergarten that Haruka started calling Makoto by his first name and Makoto calling Haruka "Haru-chan". It was Makoto who wanted to join the Iwatobi Swimming Club when they were children and Haru tagged along with him. Due to the length of time Makoto and Haruka have been friends, Makoto can usually guess what Haruka is thinking and vice-versa, resulting in the both of them being able to hold wordless conversations.

When Makoto was young, he would visit a small fishing harbor. At the fishing harbor, there was a nice old fisherman that would sometimes play with Makoto. During the summer, at the festival near the harbor, Makoto wanted to scoop for fish but already used up all his allowance. The fisherman gave him two goldfish to make him feel better. Later that summer, there was a big typhoon and the fisherman's boat sank. Many people drowned including the old fisherman. Later when the two goldfish died, he made a grave, which is now a precious memory to him, for them, in which he changes the flowers everyday. Because of this experience he is afraid of the ocean.

Elementary: As a child, Makoto used to swim the breaststroke and usually won the 100m breaststroke events against Rin but would lose the 50m breaststroke against him. It was when he teamed-up with Rin, Nagisa Hazuki and Haruka for the relay in elementary school that Makoto switched to backstroke and found that he was more comfortable with the stroke and has since specialized in the backstroke.

Junior High: In Iwatobi Junior High School, Makoto was known as "the big kid from class 2" because of his good physique and because of it, Kisumi Shigino asked him to join Iwatobi Junior High's basketball team after seeing him play during one of the P.E. classes class 1 and class 2 had together. One day before their practice at Iwatobi Swimming Club, Makoto and Haruka ran into a black stray dog. Makoto liked it but Haruka told him not to pay attention to it because it will follow him around. Even though Makoto made sure not to look at it, the dog followed them and despite Nagisa's assumptions that the dog is attached to Haruka, it was in fact attached to Makoto. It stayed down the stone stairs near Haruka and Makoto's house, but Makoto couldn't keep it because his mom wouldn't stop sneezing it if was near her. Haruka then told Makoto he would keep the dog if it stayed down the stone stairs when they come back home from school.

Trivia:

-Like all members of the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club, Makoto has a female name.

-Despite being on the swim team, Makoto is afraid of the ocean.[3] However, in the High☆Speed!, Makoto is not only afraid of the ocean, but the water in general.

-Makoto has been described as the wishy-washy type by Haruka, because he is too nice and was unable to decide which club member would be his boyfriend if he were a girl.

-Makoto and Haruka appear to have a game that consists of Makoto guessing what Haruka is thinking.

-According to Free! TV Animation Guidebook:

-Makoto likes eating green curry and chocolate.

-Makoto's best subject is Literature, while he's bad at English and Art.

-Makoto likes physical activity and manual labor.

-Makoto was voted Sexiest Anime Man of 2013 by winning over Haru Yoshida from Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun with 24861 votes.

-Makoto has won the Muscle Contest held at the renewed Iwatobi Swimming Club, where Gou was one of the judges. However, the one Gou gave the most points was Rin.

-Makoto's voice actor, Tatsuhisa Suzuki, is the vocalist for OLDCODEX, the band which performed the opening themes for both seasons of Free!, "Rage on" and "Dried Up Youthful Fame".

Makoto walked down the hall towards the swimming pool. It was joint practice with Samezuka Academy's swim team. He caught up to Nagisa, Rei and Haruka. He stood beside them as they all warmed up. His gaze drifts over towards a certain red head approaching them. His childhood friend Rin. He honestly found the other beyond attractive. He even found his newly sharp teeth a turn on as well. Makoto wouldn't admit it aloud but he got hot whenever he was near the other. He wonders just how he would lure the other close enough to sneak a taste.

Rin was telling his teammates about what should they do and which things they should be concentrated of in the next match of them. He was the captain after all. He looked back and saw Makoto and the others waiting for him there. He walked to them and then smiled faintly as always, show the four others his teeth. "Good morning guys! It's good to see you long!"

Makoto looked at Rin as he walked over. He was thinking something rather interesting but couldn't say aloud. His gaze drifting down as he couldn't keep looking at the male. Haru was looking at the water so tempted to just dive in. Nagisa poking fun at Rin and wanting to swim as well. Makoto noticed how much Nagisa was so casually touching Rin. It irked his nerves but one would never be able to tell. Makoto was so good at hiding his actual personality.

Rin sighed after the blond haired begged him to swim and he grinned. "Okay, okay!" He glanced over Haruka and then walked to him, wrapping his left arm around his neck. "Hey, hey Haru! If you like to swim that much then go on!" He laughed as he looked at the olive haired and signed him to come. "Let's swim, Makoto!"

Makoto was lost in his thoughts as he stood there. He only snapped out of it as he noticed Rin calling to him. He smiled but wasn't all for swimming today. He honestly wanted to get closer to Rin. He just wasn't sure how. There was so many ways he could go about asking the other out or even to spare some time. Makoto just didn't want to make it sound awkward or weird. He had to remain to gentle guy on the surface. He walked towards the pool which Haru had already instantly dived into

Rin looked at the other as he smiled. He was happy that he could finally go back together with the others. He noticed at he had something to tell to Gou so he sighed as he told Haruka that he would come back soon. He wanted to massage her to buy him some meat so he walked straight to the locket room and there was nobody else there.

Makoto was about to get into the water but noticed that Rin was leaving for the locker rooms. He decided to break the strap of his goggles when no one was looking. This giving him a reason to head to the locker room as well to grab his spare from his bag. As well as having a moment to talk with Rin alone. He walked back there and noticed the red head. "Hey Rin. Can we um, talk?"

[Ryouta]

Rin massaged his sister and then locked his locket again as he noticed someone standing there. He looked back and then saw his est friend, Makoto standing there, he blinked as he leaned to the lockets and looked at him with a gentle smile. "What do want you tell me, Makoto? Something wrong?" He asked gently.

Makoto was a bit nervous about asking Rin this but he couldn't help himself. "I know we've been friends for a long time and this might come to a surprise to you but..." he started wondering just what reaction he would get from the other. Just the thought alone sent shivers down his spine. Makoto took a deep breath before speaking again. "I can't get your very image out of my head. I have fallen for you Rin." he said awaiting a reply from the other. Makoto's gaze fixated on Rin to see how he would react to this.

[Ryouta]

Rin didn't really expected it to turn out like this, he wasn't even thinking that Makoto`s words to him would be important but it was, it really was! And also made him really nervous. As soon as he heard him confessed his cheeks started to burn out of embarrassment and his heart started to beat fast. He gulped as he looked away. "Wha..what are you saying Makoto? Is that a joke or something?"

Makoto walked closer to Rin. Seeing his reaction was a bit enticing. He took hold of the other's hands and held them close. "I'm not joking! I would never joke about liking you. I am being dead serious Rin." he said looking at him. He wasn't about to let this moment slip pass him. He honestly wanted the other to give him some form of reply to his confession.

Rin blushed darker, almost all the face was reddened badly as he looked down. He had no way to escape away from the other since Makoto had grabbed his hands...even after his friend telling him that this was not a joke he didn't know how to take it. It was just so sudden and Rin had never seem anything weird from Makoto when around him so why so sudden? He couldn't talk, he was silence.

"Can you not accept my feelings for you? I really want to be with you Rin. It would make me the happiest man alive." he said looking at the red head. He could tell Rin was at a lost for words. It was so cute seeing him all embarrassed like this. He starts to wonder what other expressions he could see on the other's face. He also began to find himself thinking so really naughty things.

[Ryouta]

Rin couldn't believe this at all! It was all a lie, right? A stupid joke! It was just that Rin didn't know what to say! He was seriously shy about this and he was just trembling like a girl and looking down, trying to stay away from the olive haired by taking a few steps back but as his naked body felt the cold locket behind him, he groaned cutely! He closed his eyes, if it wasn't a lie so why didn't tell him sooner? After all these years and it's strange since they were both boys!

Makoto looked at Rin finding this to be a little troublesome. He wanted some sort of reply to this. Even if it wasn't a flat out yes. Not hearing the red head say anything made it worse. "Rin, will you say something. Anything about this. If you keep silent how will I know how you feel?" Makoto was becoming slightly impatient but one couldn't tell right away.

[Ryouta]

Rin looked up at the other as he blushed how can i answer?? You...suddenly telling me this. Why now, after all these years" he still couldn't believe that makoto was telling the truth but something inside was telling him that he was and it made him more and noe nervous...he kept wondering if he was telling the truth! If he was...what should he answer, it was strange, two boys together...

Makoto glanced to the side. "To be honest I had always felt he had liked Haru to such an extent. It's why I've held back so long. You and Haru are both two people I care about. Though as time went on and I was always watching you. I noticed that your feelings towards Haru were strictly swimming based. When I realized this it have me a little confidence to actually tell you. The next part was timing. Which was never right since someone would always pop up. I felt if I didn't get this out I would lose it one day. So today sprang the moment and I took it." he said looking at Rin.

Rin listened to the other thought he didn't want to believe it was actually a good reason though he never looked at Haruka in those ways. He blushed a bit as he looked at the other`s eyes for a second, still leaning his body to the locket. He didn't what to sat, how to answer. He had no feelings like that for Makoto yet though he didn't want to hurt him either. "I seriously...don't know what to say...I..." That was the truth and his answer.

Makoto inched away from Rin. He didn't plan to let this go. He knew now that Rin knows how he felt it was only a matter of time. So he had a few tricks up his sleeve to get Rin to come to him very soon. "Oh alright. I understand this might be a bit sudden for you. I'll let you think about it more." he said wearing a rather hurt and sadden expression. Though that was far from how he actually felt. Makoto knew how Rin was so using a little guilt was perfect. He knew what would assure a perfect victory.

[Ryouta]

Rin looked at the other as he blinked, he didn't know what to do now! It was bad since he could feel that the other was feeling down but what could he do. He looked away as he fist his hands, tried to think of the right thing to do! He looked at the other as he stepped a bit closer, raising his hand up, trying to reach him. "Makoto...I'm...I don't want to hurt you, it was so sudden though I...I don't want to brake your heart...I'm confused and...and..." He was speechless.

Makoto had to hold back from smirking to this moment. He glanced over at Rin. "How about I give you a few days to think if you still feel confused we can just hang out one on one. This way you can see how it would be just the two of us together. After that I'll wait for your reply to all of this." he said giving his usual smile. He really felt liked he was luring in a big fish that he'd soon capture. The thought alone was enough to spark something in him.

Rin blushed dark as he looked away, didn't let the other to see his face. "You mean like a date or something..." No way! Impossible, that seemed something impossible for Rin to accept, dating a guy, in that time he couldn't beat that since he was still a straight person though watching the other smiled as ever made his heart to skip a bit as he closed his eyes. "I'll think about it and...just once..." He mumbled. "We can go out just once then I'll tell you my answer."

Makoto was rather happy to hear this. "Thank you Rin. Anyway I should get back before Haru and the others start to worry." he said going out first. As he walked he began thinking a little to himself. He couldn't wait to have Rin completely wrapped around his finger. It was only a matter of time. To top it off he had help on his side. With Gou in their swim club, learning little things he didn't know about Rin would be easy.

Rin looked at the other left as he leaned back to the locket , feeling that he was a about to faint, he took a deep breath as he slide down of the floor and covered his face on his hands, he ad to think of something though he didn't get the time to since suddenly somebody called him. "What are you doing Rin?" That voice was Sosuke`s, Rin shook his head as he stood up. "Nothing I'm just a bit tired! Let's get back."
