Korean Gay Cinema disturbing

Every Korean movie(few exceptions exist) must end with one of the boys dying, getting raped, saying they can't be together etc.

It occurred to me that the Korean movie industry reflects its society sooo well, portraying gay people as riders of the apocalypse.

First time I watched a Korean boyslove movie I thought 'well, okay, artistic, okay'. Second time, 'again?well,ok, its romance, lets see the ending'. As more movies came out I noticed a pattern and after 2014 I can honestly say I am pissed off. I stopped watching Korean BL movies because the negativity theme is not artistic anymore. It's the same old pattern of disturbance and distress showing how immature and monotonic Korean movies(society) are.

Seriously, it's a never-ending sea of monotonic and disturbing movie themes.

Thai movies are so much better in that aspect. There's a healthy mix of positivity and negativity that you can't find in K-movies.

What are you thoughts? Isn't it pissing you off by now?

You should probably try to watch No Regrets because there no one dies and it's a bit of positivity in the end of the movie. Though the movie is a bit dark.

A sort of happy Korean movie is Boy Meets Boy, though it's short and mute. I'm not sure how much it can be considered "a movie". :D

On the other hand I think many of the gay/BL movies have the tendency to make tragic ends because that makes the movie more shocking. If you think of the best known and appreciated BL movies (Brokeback Mountain, Boys Love 1 and 2 etc) all have this tragic aura.

Actually, I think it's a more social problem then anything else. See, movies gotta sell, so in strict societies where homossexualism is frauned upon, the market tend to force the hands of the producers to make it tragical or overtly sober. We see so much good LB's momentum coming from Japan cause they are more "to each it's own", they really think the only one caring about how to live your life should be you, so I think the hands are less forced in this sense.

Here in Brazil, the single soap opera that had the guts to go trough with a gay couple ended up having to cut the kiss scene off from the episode where it would appear, for there is a lot of religious fanatism here. In Argentina things are less severe. I think it varies with each countrie's reality.

I agree, it varies and while I understand the social aspects and boundaries of being gay in Korea, I am afraid I do not understand your statement, which is, let me quote you here:

"the market tend to force the hands of the producers to make it tragical or overtly sober".

Now, we know that Korean society, on the surface, likes to play around with the idea of two guys being in love with each other, but, isn't the target audience the LGBT community and its friends(read. fangirls/boys, artists, etc)? I seriously doubt any decent producer would finance BL movies targeting a wider audience, that is the majority of Koreans who— you said it yourself— discriminate sexual minorities.

About the West- lately I am both shocked and amazed at how the West changed. It's getting hard to find a movie without gay people or gay romance. I love how western society(always: minus Russia| sic!) has changed their approach on homosexuality - movies/TV shows stopped picturing gay people as demoralized individuals committing sodomy.

Really? I had no idea Brazil was behind the West in terms of acceptance/tolerance. I always imagined being gay in Brazil was similar to being gay in Thailand. I guess liberal thinking and religion in South America are separate things and society is probably split between those... shh!

About the "target audience". Yea, one would easily think so. But the fact is that the said 'not-target' still influences the market. If they get too shocked or scandalized, they could rage against it and force the company behind the movie to have some serious problems (when releasing movies NOT made for the LGBT community)

About here in Brazil, things are kinda shady. If we talk South America, even more so. Buenos Aires, in Argentina, is known as the "Mecca of the LGBT movement". Take a less-then-two-hours-flight to São Paulo and You will find out a diferent reality. Gay people being beaten up to death, religious moviments mingled up in politics lifting flags like "Gay cure", and, at the same time, the LGBT movement being corrupted by people that make it like a Whorehouse out in the open. The LGBT movement is demoralized here in Brazil. So much so that most of the LGBT community are AGAINST IT, for what it has become. While that happens, the few serious politics that fight for equalitary marriage and such laws are frauned upon and sabotaged from the so called "Bancada Evangélica" (Evangelicall Party) that control people trough a common hatred so they can keep on stealing money trough their churches and send it to foreign accounts to where they fly with particular helicopters. Well, I'll give You three chances to guess the hatred target of the moment.

All the while, take a 45 minute car trip to some cities that openly support gay marriage and a church that even accepted gay people in their midst. Yea, a strange kind of cold war is underway, and allthough I'm closeted, most of the heterossexuals here allready join forces defending the LGBT movement. Well, the one that is not trying to destroy itself, that is.

I did the same thing. But not only because of their predictable and always-dramatic storyline, it was also the bad quality of the movies and their super bad actors/amateurs. It's not a gay thing or a self korean society portrait, just that 10 in 4 korean movies end in tears. No math error. XD But even so, others love those type of movies so there's really no point in wondering why do they produce that. Conceptions and misconceptions, that's why you're a consumer - pick what you like, avoid what you don't. Simple as that.

Have you watched the korean movie 'Two weddings and a funeral'? It's a happy gay movie (tissues will need to be at hand, hence the title) but it does end positivly :) Its great and fun to watch...even my mum enjoyed it ;)

I remember not that long ago that I watched like 5 asian gay movies in a week and evey sngle one had a sad ending. They were really good but so depressing. I need some light hearted movies in my life.

Now, we know that Korean society, on the surface, likes to play around with the idea of two guys being in love with each other, but, isn't the target audience the LGBT community and its friends(read. fangirls/boys, artists, etc)? But targeting a wider audience can mean more money, providing it does well.

And that's the one thing I don't quite understand. When it comes to (korean) bands people ship the memebers like crazy but if someone calls them gay they get all defensive about it. But isn't that the whole point in shipping? (especially if it's a same-sex ship) Probably because it's a ship, it's not real and can't be real...
