Appearance: Tall-ish and tanned, from working on the beach. He has a good physique after training in swimming and running. Thick, messy brown hair and bright blue eyes that he considers his best feature.

Personality: Nate is a cheerful, protective kind of person that makes friends easily. He can be vain and often lets praise get to his head, but not too often.

Plot: Nate has a summer job as a lifeguard, and one long, boring day a beach-goer alerts them that something dangerous could be swimming in the waters. He goes out to investigate, only to find that a mermaid is the cause of the panic! Nanai poses no threat, but the second they see the lifeguard, they’re determined to latch onto him.

Nate stretched in the sun, giving a lazy, wide mouthed yawn. He was striding across the sand, squinting against the glaring rays. His back prickled with the heat. Days like this were the best. Everybody having fun, playing games, eating food...being a lifeguard was...enjoyable.

 

It had been so calm that Nate almost jumped when somebody called for him anxiously. A young woman, pointing towards a patch of water near the rocks.

"Excuse me?" she asked worriedly. "I saw something swimming about, a-and I'm not sure what it is. It could be dangerous! Could you check it out...?"

 

Nate gave a reassuring smile and gently touched the woman's arm. "Don't worry," he said smoothly. "I'm sure it's nothing, but thank you for alerting me."

 

Nate walked over to the water's edge and began to swim out, bobbing back up for air. He dove back down and neared the rocks, peering around. And then he spotted it-a boy with a tail. Beautiful and strange. Nate gasped and choked, hauling himself up onto a rock to catch his breath.

Nanai was out for a swim. It was a lovely day out and he had a favorite place he loves to visit. He moved towards the rocks as he gazed out at the beach nearby. It was as lively as ever. He loved to watch the humans move about upon the sand. At times he would wonder and imagine himself doing the things they do. As he sat beside the rocks he caught the attention of a female nearby. He quickly dove back into the water. He wasn't one who liked to be seen by many.

 

Nanai was trying to hide once more when a male seemed to be out in the water. He poked his head out of the water and stares at the male. For the first time in his life he noticed something more mesmerizing than the depths of the sea. This male captures his every heart in that short moment. He would have said something to him but that was a forbidden thing to do. Mermaids and mermen weren't to talk to mortals.

Nate almost fainted. He put a hand to his head, heart thundering. His mind was blank and devoid of any words. He felt sick and shivery, drawing his legs up to his chest. A quick pinch on his arm cleared his brain up a little. Taking a deep breath, Nate sat straight up and stared back at the sparkling waters. He needed to be a man about this. He probably didn't even need to panic!

 

"E-excuse me?" Nate called, hoping that the merboy could hear him. A flash caught his eye, and he guessed that it was the creature's tail. It had been beautiful; shiny, blue and silver. Nate had never seen anything like it. "Are you...are you dangerous?" he asked feebly. "I'd appreciate it if you could...um...tell me..."

His gaze shimmers a little as he watched the male. Suddenly being asked such a thing was a bit surprising. He wonders why mortals would think mermaids were dangerous. Even so he had to give the other an answer. So Nanai shook his head no. He then moved a little to sit across from the other on the rocks. He wanted so badly to say something to him. Even if it was a simple hello. However he was very strict on himself to obey the rules of the sea.

 

Nanai knew many mer-folk who talked to mortals and were fine. He was just too scared to actually give it a try. His tail splashed at the water a little as he looked at the male. He couldn't help it anymore. This was probably the only time he'd see the male. "You don't have to be scared. Mermaids and mermen aren't violent."

It felt dangerous, talking to the merboy. He was weird, new and foreign in Nate's eyes, even if he was pretty. His tail was particularly beautiful. Nate had never seen anything like it, not even on the biggest fish he'd caught. He snapped his attention away from the glittering scales to meet the creature's eyes, and then almost jumped at the sound of his voice. For some reason, he was a little on edge today.

 

"A-are they not?" Nate glanced towards the shore and cursed softly, ducking behind a large rock and bringing the boy with him to assure that nobody saw. "Be careful. Even if you're peaceful, humans can be vicious. Usually out of curiosity or greed." Nate felt a certain protectiveness wash over him. "What're you doing here, anyways?"

Nanai looked at to be other silently. He could tell this person was taking in the current situation all too clearly. His appearance seemed normal to him but to a human he was sure it was a sight to see. He didn't mind if this particular human saw all of him. This male intrigued Nanai to the point he wouldn't mind going home with the mortal.

 

His eyes widen a little as the other suddenly pulled him out of view. "I know the dangers that lurk with talking or being too close to humans. I only come here to watch how people enjoy the sea. The laughter, the joy, the music and even romance. The ocean can bring out so many different emotions in humans. I love to watch them all." he said with a smile

The merboy spoke more poetically than any human Nate had ever heard. His voice was pretty, too, he noted. Nate hoped that he wasn't a siren or anything. Not that he knew much about that kind of stuff. "Oh, really? It's that interesting to you?" Nate spent all day watching people swim, but it was more of a safety thing than a past time. "Humans are...ok..." He paused. "Aren't...your people more interesting though?" He glanced towards the boy's tail.

 

Nate was quiet for a moment. He rested his chin on a rock, poking at a anemone half submerged in water. Then: "What's your name, if you don't mind me asking?"

"In your case we are the interesting ones. In my case humans are interesting. So it works both ways. We know only what we can see and hear. You know what your hear and are told in stories. Its all about curiosity in the end for both of us. All just depends on how curious one is." he said as he glanced at the other. Nanai was really happy he was talking to the person. For more reasons than one.

 

His gaze moves towards the water. "You want to know my name!/ If I tell you then please tell me yours okay." he said softly before blushing a little. "My name is Nanai Ningyo. Its a pleasure to meet you." he said happily.

"It's just..." Nate sighed, continuing to examine the boy's tail. "You're so much more beautiful and graceful...when I was younger, I would hear stories of people like you. I always imagined you as people that turned into humans and swam alongside dolphins. I even thought that one day I might discover Atlantis. I never really believed it, but now..." Nate gave a gentle smile.

 

"Nice name," he complimented. "I'm Nate Winters, and it's awesome- I mean, uh, a pleasure to meet you, Nanai." He tried not to stumble over the pronunciation. He frowned a little, then sighed. "I...I don't want to say goodbye, but people will start worrying..."

Nanai couldn't help but giggle. The other was really cute. "Well if you really want to discover Atlantis you can. I could take you there. I mean if you ever wanted to." he said feeling a little happy about this. He glanced to the side a little. "Also we do swim alongside dolphins but that's just for fun. As for having human legs, we can get those two but its not as easy as one thinks." he said frowning.

 

His attention turned to Nate as he heard his name. He instantly loved the sound of it. "Your name is really nice. Plus your last name is my favorite season of all times." he said smiling. Nanai didn't wish to say good bye either but he couldn't stay ashore all day. "I'll come back here tomorrow. We can meet right here again. If you want to." he said

Nate's eyes brightened and his cheeks flushed a little. "R-really? Atlantis exists? I'd love to-" He stopped himself before he could say anything else embarrassing. Nate cleared his throat and flushed. "Um, I mean, that's pretty cool. Maybe we could, heh, go some time?"

 

He gave a small sigh. "Well, it was great to meet you. I'll be back..." He thought about his lunch break. "At roughly noon. I promise, ok?" Tentatively, Nate reached out and gently touched Nanai's shoulder, blushing softly. "Wouldn't miss it for the world." He gave a small wave and began to swim back, already feeling sad. ((Timeskip?))

Nanai giggled as he listened to the other. "You sure love getting excited about such little things. Its very cute so don't stop yourself. I want to see you all happy about the things I say." he said softly. His gaze moved towards the other as he silently thinks about things. It wasn't rare for mer-folk to bring mortals undersea. It was just many things to watch out for.

 

As he glanced at the ocean he smiled at Nate. "Alright then until we met again." he said as he felt the touch of the other's hand upon him. His cheeks flush as he watched Nate swim away. He sighs softly before diving into the depth of the sea. ((sure))

Even a day later, Nate was still thinking about Nanai calling him 'cute.' He had been restless all night, and he had barely gotten any sleep just thinking about all of it. However, in the morning, he was strangely refreshed. He had walked out onto the beach excitedly, jittering his knee.

 

When it came to lunch break, he forgot all about his food and swam out cautiously, making sure that no one was paying attention to him. He reached the rocks and found a comfortable position, swishing his feet through the water. "Hey, Nanai?" he called softly. "Are you here yet?"

Nanai was home laying in his giant clam shell of a bed. He was thinking about Nate the entire time. His older brothers watched him clearly noticing their sibling in love. He sat up deciding to ask them for advice. "Have you two ever fallen for someone from dry land? Also another boy to be exact?" he asked. His brothers looked at him. The eldest smiled. "Love does not worry about gender or age or origin. As long as both hearts are insync with one another." he said. Nanai was really glad to hear that. It meant he might have a chance.

 

The next day he swam out from home wanting to be sure he wouldn't miss his chance to meet with Nate. He arrived only moments before the other. He swam about in the water staying close but out of sight. He moved close upon hearing splashing sounds. He then heard his name and swam up to the rocks. "Hello Nate. I missed you." he said

Nate's eyes lit up upon seeing Nanai, and all he could do was drink in the other's appearance. They were so elegant and pretty....prettier than any of the girls on the beach. Heck, prettier than any girl that he'd seen at school, too. And his tail-it was almost blinding. Natr found himself a little breathless, to his surprise, and he splashed some water on his cheeks to cool the redness

"H-hey, Nanai," he smiled, thrilled that the merman had even shown up, let alone remembered his name. "I missed you too. I was worried the heat had made me go crazy or something...heh heh..." He pushed a hand through his hair. "It's weird, really. I've only just met you, but I like you a lot."

Nanai looked at Nate with a smile. "I am glad to hear you missed me as well. I mean it was only a couple of hours but it felt like forever." he said as he glanced at the water. "Don't go saying things like that. I don't want to take your version of like the wrong way." he said frowning a little. It was nice to hear Nate say such things but he was worried. He had fallen for the other in an instant. Nanai had to be sure he wouldn't end up heartbroken

Nate was smiling eagerly-until he heard what Nanai said about 'like.' Surely the boy didn't mean what he thought he meant. Though, now that Nate thought about it, 'liking' the merman wasn't exactly the worst thing ever at all. His cheeks flushed a little and he touched Nanai's hand softly.

 

"Nanai?" he said gently, blinking a bit. "Are you ok? Did I say something to upset you?" He swallowed and clenched his fists. "What do you mean...?"

Nanai shook his head. "I am alright Nate. No need to worry. You didn't do anything at all. Its just..." he started but stopped half way. He looked at the water and his tail. "I will be honest. I fell for you within just our first meeting together. It might have only lasted a short time but it meant the world to me. So if you say you like me I will get really happy about it. Though it'll hurt me more knowing your like is only just as friends. So its best to try and make it clear so I won't misunderstand." he said

Nate frowned worriedly as Nanai spoke, terrified that he'd upset him. He would never forgive himself if he did-it made Nate's heart pound just to think about it. But as soon as he heard what Nanai had to say, he paled and his mouth went dry. He had no idea what to say.

 

"Uh-um...N-nanai?" he stuttered, his cheeks flooding even pinker. "I...I..." He was at a loss for words. He didn't want to say no-in fact, the fact that the merman liked him 'like that' was completely amazing, and Nate even felt a bit dizzy. "I..I think you could do much better than me, i-if you wanted..." He laughed nervously. "B-but...I..." He took a deep breath. "I'm not saying no..."

Nanai glanced over to Nate noticing the other seemed to be flustered and at a loss for words. He felt upset with himself for saying so much so soon. "Nate please don't reply to this. Its just a little fish dream I know will never come true. I do thank you for being this sweet about it." he said as he moved closer to the water.

 

His gaze moves away as he was silent for a while. "I think I will head back early today. Lets meet again soon Nate." he said as he slips into the water. He glanced back and waves at the other before making his way to swim off into the ocean

Nate began to panic, and his stomach became a maze of knots. It hurt badly, and it hurt even more to know that he'd upset Nanai. "N-Nanai, no! Wait!" he cried, but the merman had already vanished into the shimmering waves of the ocean. Nate only had to pause for a few seconds before he plunged himself into the water, blinking few times.

He wanted to call out for Nanai, but that wouldn't work. He was deep underwater, and he was losing air fast.

Nanai hadnt swam that far off when he noticed that Nate jumped in after him. He swam back towards the other and started to think quickly. Then without a moment hesitation, he gently placed his lips to the other's. He was breathing air into him so he could catch his breath and hold it before returning to the surface. The only issue was with this Nate would be able to talk underwater. Though it would only be for an hour.

Nate felt like his lungs were about to burst open, and he could feel tears begin to cloud his eyes along with the salt water. That was, until Nanai 'kissed' him. His hands clenched into fists, and he would've gasped if he could. Instead, he just stared at him, wide-eyed.

 

It took him a second to realise that his lungs were full of air, and he thrashed back up to the surface, gasping and spluttering. He sat back on the rock, shoulders trembling. He felt as if he were about to cry. Again. "Nanai?" he gasped. "Nanai, are you there?! Thank you!"

Nanai let go of Nate as the other made his way back to the rocks. He followed after him and glanced up slowly. "I'm here. No need to thank me. I would have done that a million time over. Anyway I should be on my way. Please don't do anything dangerous like that again. I want to be able to come and visit you again." he said

 

He wasn't sure what to do or say. After all Nate followed after him for a reason. He just didn't know why. He waited a moment to see if the other would explain why he had jumped into the water like that

Nate flushed scarlet, keeping his mouth shut and looking into his lap. "W-wait..." he begged softly. "Don't go yet, Nanai...I..." He took a deep breath and gently put his hand on the merman's forearm. "I...I'm sorry. I guess this is a little fast..." He giggled weakly.

 

Nate slowly leaned in and gave Nanai a kiss on the cheek. "I don't usually like boys, you know. It's kinda...uh..." He squirmed a little, trying to find tactful words. "Whatever. But maybe now I could make an exception?"
