The young man's breath caught in his throat when he heard that Alexander's heart had stopped. He bit down hard on the inside of his lip, tasting a bit of coppery blood, and forced himself to look away, unsure if he would be able to control himself if he watched. He knew that he would only get in the way, and he didn't want to cause a scene and risk his boss' life. He'll be fine, Beckett tried to reassure himself, but like always, doing so didn't help at all. His leg started moving up and down subconsciously, and he pressed down on his knee with his hands to keep it still. His nervous ticks would only make things worse. Please don't die...I haven't had enough time to get to know you.

The paramedics had to continue CPR up until the ambulance stopped at the hospital. As Alexander was taken away, Beckett was told to follow one of the nurses. "Please, wait in the lobby. We'll update you as soon as we know his condition." The nurse spoke while a number of doctors worked around both Alex and the other driver. Beckett was left alone for the time being, as Alex had to be taken to surgery. His injuries weren't light in any way, after all. Especially with his heart having stopped, the risk of him dying was far too high for anyone's liking.

Beckett, who was somewhat in a panicked trance, stumbled out of the ambulance, his eyes once again locked on Alexander. He was brought back to reality by the sound of the woman's voice, and he nodded in response, this time not even bothering to fake a smile. With quick footsteps he made his way to the waiting room, but once there, it was hard for him to sit still. His anxiety was overwhelming, and his right leg kept jolting up and down. His hands were wringing together, and he was biting the inside of his lip, not even caring that he had already made a cut. He wished that he could call someone...His eyes widened as he remembered that Annabeth had given him her phone number. He stood up and went to the entrance, dialing her number and holding his breath as he waited for her to pick up.

Annabeth was this close to falling asleep when the goddamn phone rang. Her head fell back, a groan parting her lips as she struggled to sit up and find her phone. "Oh, jeez, chill out, I'm getting it..." She grumbled to the phone, finally pulling it out from under the pillow. She blinked when she saw the number, one eyebrow raising. "Hello? Beck?" She spoke, laying back down on the couch. Blindly searching for the remote, she turned off the TV, covering a yawn. What could he possibly want? Beckett didn't seem like the type who'd call for a chat.

The brunette almost melted with relief when he heard the blonde's voice. He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Even though the woman wasn't there, he blushed in embarrassment and quietly cleared his throat. "Um, A-Annabeth? I'm sorry for calling you this late, but..." He trailed off, struggling to say what he wanted without getting emotional. His efforts were in vain, however, as his voice cracked when he continued, "M-Mr. Black was in a car accident...I-I'm at the local hospital. He's in the middle of surgery...I-I don't know if he's okay..." By this point he was breathing heavily and fighting to hold in his tears. "Um, I didn't know who else to call...s-sorry..."

Annabeth let out a soft sigh as she waited for the other to finally say something. When he did, however, she honestly wished he hadn't. "Hey, hey, calm down. I'm gonna get there as soon as possible, you hear me?" She said firmly as she stood up and shruged on a jacket, then put on her shoes. "Now don't hang up, just talk to me. Did they say anything about his condition?" She asked as she ran outside, waving for a taxi to stop. With this kind of news, she was in no position to drive. Besides, driving while on the phone could be dangerous...

Beckett took a brief moment to inhale deeply, trying to calm himself, before replying. "They didn't say much, but I stayed with him until the ambulance came. His...his legs were stuck because the front of the car was crushed, and...and he stopped breathing and couldn't open his eyes." The young man had stepped outside so that his panicking wouldn't disturb the other people waiting for their own news. He paced outside of the building, unable to stand still.

Annabeth closed her eyes, rubbing her forehead while listening to Beckett. Crap... With a deep breath, she glanced up at the driver, nibbling on her bottom lip. "Listen, I'm sure he'll be fine. I'm gonna be there soon, too." She spoke, looking through the window. "He has to be fine..." The blonde muttered as she closed her eyes, with her free hand nervously tugging on her earlobe. Once she was at the hospital, the woman hurriedly gave the money to the driver and got out, looking around for Beckett.

Beckett's doe brown eyes, which were wide with fear, searched frantically for any sign of Annabeth. He was desperate at this point; he wasn't sure if he would be able to stay calm if he was alone. Of course, there were people around him, but he didn't know any of them, and that only made him more nervous. He needed a familiar face. Please hurry... He straightened when he saw a taxi pull up, and he could have cried in relief when he spotted Annabeth. He quickly made his way over to the smaller woman, his whole being radiating anxiety. "T-there haven't been any updates," he informed her, his voice shaking just as his body was.

Annabeth didn't notice Beckett until he was close enough to inform her there was no further information. Placing her hands on the other's shoulders, she squeezed them slightly and managed a smile. "Calm down, okay? It's... It's good that there haven't been updates, means he's still alive." She breathed out, pulling the man into a hug. The woman couldn't bear the thought of Alexander dying, he'd become an important part of her life by now. The blonde let out a deep breath before pulling away, biting down on her lip. "Let's just go inside and wait. Everything's going to be fine."

Beckett sound himself nodding along with everything Annabeth said, too focused on absorbing her comforting presence to really consider what she was saying. "O-okay. Um, I think there are a few seats left." His hand twitched, as if he was about to take her hand, but then he shoved both hands into his coat pockets and led the way towards the entrance, holding the door open for the blonde woman before following her inside. Some of the other patients had left, so they had some room to themselves.

Annabeth herself felt close to crying, unable to take in the fact that Alexander was in surgery even if she tried reassuring Beckett. The woman grabbed onto the other's arm, trying to hide her shaking hands as well. She took in a deep breath as she sat down on one of the chairs, still holding onto the man, her hair in a messy bun, the make-up she hadn't washed off now smudged on her face. "He's so stupid... I always tell him to drive carefully, and now... Now he..." The blonde bit down on her lip, too close to tears to keep talking.

Beckett's panic spiked when he realized that Annabeth's eyes were watery. He flustered about for a moment, trying to think of something to say or something to do. In the end, tears gathered in his own eyes, and he wrapped his arms around her, bringing her in for a gentle but firm hug. "I-I'm sorry," he whispered, sniffling softly. "I-I wish I could have done something..." Somehow, despite the little time they had spent together, the young man viewed Annabeth as an older sister figure, and he had become quite attached to her. His thoughts were still unclear when it came to Alexander, but he knew that he would be just as devastated as the others if he died.

Annabeth nearly sobbed when she was pulled into a hug, gripping onto Beckett as if he was saving her life. "I don't know what... What I would do if.. If he..." The blonde choked up on her words, burying her face into the other's shoulder, unable to hold her tears back. When it came to things like this, she just couldn't handle them. Anything else, she was perfectly capable of behaving like a sane person, however in hospitals... Hospitals scared the hell out of her, and when a person this close was involved, she just got so, so scared.

The young man held her close, seeking comfort just as much as she was. He couldn't find his voice, so he simply clung to her, his own tears silently rolling down his cheeks. His brown eyes were squeezed shut, and his breathing was uneven. Though he was agnostic, he found himself praying. Please, please let him be okay... They stayed like that for several minutes, saying nothing. Once his eyes were dry, he pulled away and wiped his cheeks with his sleeves, giving Annabeth a shaky smile. However, his smile faded when he saw someone approaching them.

Annabeth couldn't find the strength inside her to calm herself down, she just couldn't. The blonde just clung onto the other while she could, the tears not stopping even when Beckett pulled away. The woman didn't manage to smile back, even. She just broke down again, hiding her face into her hands as her whole body shook.

The doctor approached them both with a serious expression on her face. "We got him to surgery just in time. Although he sustained severe injuries, we're doing all we can to save his life. Now, do you know if he has any allergies we should be aware of? Any diseases?" She questioned, glancing to Beckett, then to Annabeth. Gently placing a hand on the blonde's shoulder, she let out a small smile. "I know this is scary and hard, but we need all the information we can get."

Some of the tension vanished when Beckett heard that Alexander was still alive, but he knew that could change at any given moment. He squeezed Annabeth's hand reassuringly before turning towards the doctor. "Um, w-we're not family," he stuttered, blushing slightly, as he was afraid of upsetting the woman. "A-Annabeth is his friend, b-but I'm..." He paused. What was he to Alexander? "...I'm just a co-worker," he supplied, briefly averting eye contact. "I-I'm not sure about his allergies."

Annabeth tried to stop crying for long enough to say something, but it took some time to gather herself. While Beckett talked, the doctor pursed her lips slightly and nodded. "Are you sure there's no family to call? Wife? Sister?" At the mention of Alex's wife, the blonde's body tensed up, tears coming back to her eyes. "I... He's divorcing his wife... And there's no one else... Alex... He's allergic t-to penicillin..." She managed to say without breaking down to tears again, although she was squeezing Beckett's hand really, really tightly. The doctor let out a smile and nodded, thanking for the information before leaving again.

Beckett couldn't help but feel relieved when the doctor left. It was hard for him to talk to people he didn't know, especially in these types of situations. I wish I could have been more helpful. He squeezed Annabeth's hand in return, however he was much gentler. He didn't want to hurt her, and he could take the pain. In fact, when he was younger, he used to seek it out when he was suffering emotionally. The two sat in silence, waiting for another update with bated breath.

Annabeth only realized she was squeezing Beckett's hand tightly after a while and let go instantly after realizing that. She apologized, her face puffy and red from the crying. During their wait for another update, she managed to doze off on the other's shoulder, hugging his arm to herself. As the doctor came again, it didn't seem like she was bringing good news. "There were a few complications. There's a risk of his spine having been injured in the crash... We're doing all we can to restore his ability to walk, but there's no certainty he will regain full control." She spoke quietly, so she wouldn't wake the blonde. "Would you like me to wait until she's awake or will you tell her yourself?"

Beckett gave Annabeth a small smile, wordlessly reassuring her that there was no need for her to be sorry. He allowed her to hold onto his arm, and once she was asleep he gently tilted her head so that his shoulder was serving as a pillow. He spent his time staring up at the ceiling, trying not to think or feel anything. The doctor's footsteps caused him to stiffen, an he looked at her with wide brown eyes. His heart plummeted after she had finished speaking, and for a moment he couldn't breathe. He was frozen, and then he inhaled sharply through his nose and looked away. "...I'll tell her," he murmured, his voice tight.

The woman let out a soft sigh as she crouched down, gently placing a hand on Beckett's thigh. "Are you sure? They don't need me right now, I could wait with you." She said with a small smile, looking into the man's eyes. "This must be hard, waiting like this... You should try and get some rest too. We don't know yet how long it will take." She spoke quietly, gently squeezing his thigh. The doctor seemed to understand what the other was going through, even if she couldn't feel his pain.

Beckett instinctively flinched when she touched him, and he gave her an embarrassed, apologetic glance. Carefully, he adjusted Annabeth's head on his shoulder, as it had started to slip off. He held her steady as he turned back to the doctor. "I...you don't have to," he said quietly, looking off to the side. "I'll be okay. I'm more worried about Annabeth and Mr. Black." He was tired, but he would stay awake until the blonde woman woke up.

The doctor pulled her hand away immediately after noticing Beckett's discomfort, but said nothing. "Well, just make sure to not stress over it too much. I still suggest you try and sleep, but I can't make you." The woman smiled sadly as she stood up, lightly tugging her earlobe. "I'll come back to you as soon as there's another update." She spoke softly, turning around to walk away.

Beckett opened his mouth to say something, but hesitated. It was only after she had turned around did he nervously call after her. "Um, th-thank you." His voice was soft, and he was unsure if she had heard him. He sighed and leaned back, making sure that Annabeth was comfortable. He returned to staring up at the ceiling, and he debated on whether or not he should try to sleep. He didn't want to have Annabeth wake up without him to support her, but he was worried that he would be too exhausted to deal with what was to come. In the end, he closed his eyes, but his sleep was mcuh more fitful than Annabeth's, and he woke frequently.
