#1: The first two characters which make 'Shirotani' are 'castle' and 'valley'. Like these lonely and isolated castles of protagonists we have read like kids in stories. The interesting part is that the manga-ka chose "Shiro" (castle) which has the same reading as "Shiro" (white) in contrasts to the seme's name's character "Kuro" (black). The play of sounds, call it. The other two characters making 'Tadaomi' are 'loyalty; faithfulness', and one very interesting choice for the second part - 'omi'. This kanji can mean 'captive; servant; slave', however in its reading as 'omi' it holds an ancient heredity rank. You can read the short text about the powerful omi clan on Wikipedia,

#2: The characters that make 'Kurose' are 'black' and 'shallow; sand bar'. However the second character also has as a meaning 'chance; opportunity' and 'one's position'. The 'Riku' part is with meaning 'shore' but it has another meaning as well, 'satisfactory' and 'decent; worthy'. But another interesting thing is that 'Riku' can be used as the number '6' in documentations, read as 'Roku' for the reading comes from the Chinese 'Lok'. Numbers play important role for Asians. #3: It is an interesting name, for sure. The kanji that make 'Asami' are 'drug; opium' and 'see; view; chance; hope'. The funny part is that he's got 'mi' (to view) when he is from the series 'Viewfinder', lol. It was hard to come up with a decent combination but if we take it as 'opium' that is 'seen' (a.k.a. known) it would be 'infamous', we all know drugs are bad. However, the name can be also read as 'Omi'. Which has an historic meaning of rank, more you can read on Wikipedia,

. The 'Ryuuichi' part is made of 'one; the best' and 'noble'.

 

#4: 'Takaba' is made of two characters - 'high' and 'feathers; bird (though not completely literal term)'. The other part, of 'Akihito' is made of 'autumn' and 'humanity; compassion; man'. A well drawn contrast in Viewfinder series, while on is related to the arising crimes, the other is related to humanity. As well, the fun part is, if we take only the sound of 'asa' from 'Asami' it can mean 'morning; early' while 'aki' from' Akihito' is 'autumn; late'. Correct me if wrong but Asami is always one step ahead from Akihito, lol. Poor dude is always late to catch up.

#5: The characters that make 'Shindou' are 'new' and 'hall; shrine; origin'. Coming to the second name which holds the meaning of 'nostalgia; distress; anxiety' made of the named such and the character for 'one'. I guess it suggest a character who is very timid but at the same time has what it brings 'the new' in our times.

 

#6: The two characters from 'Yuki' holds the meaning of 'reason; cause' and 'precious; honor'. The second part is made of another two characters which mean 'sparkle of gems' and 'village; mile'. The interesting contrast between them is that Yuki holds kanji combinations of a path related to wealth, diamonds and so on (besides the part with 'aristocrat') while Shuuichi is with 'anxiety' which can suggest the struggles of bringing 'the sense of something new' to times. Or who knows, may be Shuuichi is the sparkling diamond on Yuki's path. ;D

 

#7: It is a beautiful name made of four characters; the first two hold the meaning of 'high' and 'bridge'. The other two are made of 'beauty' and 'blossom'. Blossom in Japan is a symbol of hope, especially the Sakura blossom. The funny part here is that the last character which means 'blossom' has one rather late meaning, 'erotic prints'. I guess Misaki is the material of Usami's erotic novels, for real and literally, XD.

 

#8: It is a rather hard name. The 'Usami' part is made of three characters - 'roof; heavens' , 'adviser; help' and 'to see; hope; chance'. If we take that roof is under the meaning of 'someone above rest' and 'help' going along with whether 'hope' or 'to see' - I guess most suited is related to 'god'. Besides the last character from' Akihito' means 'boy; old suffix for Shinto gods'. The contrast is drawn from 'aki' ('autumn') while 'Misaki' is 'beautiful blossom'. I guess Spring and Autumn are good picks for one who seeks hope on top of the world and one who brings hope through spring.

 

#9: The first two characters in 'Sumizome' mean 'black ink' and 'stain; dye'. In Japan ink is strictly related to calligraphy, which is believed to be one of the most traditional beautiful arts in Asia. In the past many swordmen practiced calligraphy to train their swordskills. To use the ink and create beauty requires a lot of patience, and patience always leads to wisdom. The name 'Kaede' is made of one single character which means 'Maple tree'. It is a symbolic tree for Japan and it is the most famous one during Autumn with its dark red maple leaves. It symbolizes 'elegance'.

 

#10: A hard name once again 'Noe' is made of two characters - 'rough; and wild chrysanthemum' and 'bay; and Edo (old Tokyo) character). The chrysanthemum itself is related to the Imperial Family. The second part is made of three characters, 'companion; ethic', 'big; thick' and 'son'. The latest one takes part in the combination for the old word for 'prostitute' (just saying...XD). On the whole, his name gave me hard time.

#11: 'Kumo' is made of one single character which holds the meaning of 'clouds; shadow'. As for the second part, 'Tenka' is made of two strong and very symbolic characters in Asia 'heavens' and 'fire'. Fire is strictly related to the sun as well to the Imperial Family.

 

#12: 'Abeno' is made of the characters - 'peaceful; quiet' and 'department; club' which makes me think if it is not the reason of being named such way because he taught Tenka's brother the way of the sword. Besides the character from 'Sousei' is 'blue' (which can also mean 'youth; unripe) and the other is 'generation', hm. I guess we can interpret it as well 'The Master of the Young Generation'.

The characters of Motoki Fumihiro are rather aristocrat-like. We have neat combination of 'origin', 'tree', 'literature/art' and 'Dr.' (alternative 'to win grand-like' nuance). Correct me if wrong, but Fumi actually 'gambled' with his idea to win/test Shunpei. And he won it with grace, lol. Rather serious name though, suits his image.

On other hand Shunpei's characters are beautiful despite the 'thug'-image he tries to pull off. 'Spring','Peace/Clear', 'Mountain', 'Name/Reputation'. Now, this is rather amusing. I mean, look at the idea of a grand mountain that stands above all, even the skies can't escape it. But then comes the beauty of Spring, its purity and clarity. So our boy acts tough and grand, but is actually such a softie inside. Or so I see the name. Lovely, nevertheless.
