The day had been a complete mess. That morning waking up to a completely wracked house, having your mother scream at you first thing in the morning and not to mention barely get any sleep due to disgusting sex sounds that filled the walls. Putting in headphones only blocked the sound but did not provide sleep.

Kazue's eyes were so tired he could barely see where he was walking and a times he'd have to slow down afraid he'd fall and break his nose.

The day went on like normal but it began to rain midway through the day making him far sleepier than he'd been before.

'I wish I could live in peace...peace...peace' it felt like he was going crazy repeating that word over and over again with no results, with no hope for change.

The sound of an alarm blaring pop music awoke Hotaka from his slumber. Quickly hopping out of bed and changing into his uniform. He noticed a note from his mother, asking him to pick up some groceries. He hummed some meringue he would hear his mother play on Sunday mornings as she cleaned the house. She said it was what his father loved to play and pull her in for a dance. He noticed people giving him strange looks. He'd assume that after living here for several years, the neighbors would stop their gawking. Judging it's a small town, they aren't used to seeing any immigrants. He shrugged it off and continued on his way.

It was during lunch that Kazue found a second to sleep, ignoring his own food, he placed his head in his hands and instantly feel asleep.

It felt good and refreshing for a second. In science class teachers said that lack of sleep lead to anxiety and depression.

'do I have that' he asked himself and brushed it off. His head was tapped lightly as the teacher entered the room, lunch was over.

The nap flipped a page to the teens mood but it did not take away the nasty lingering feeling from before.

"Sensei may I use the restroom?"he asked while his hand was in the air.

"Quickly" he answered.

The tapping of his shoes was heard on the old school floor as Kazue walked.

Hotaka sat quietly in his seat. Nobody bothered talking to him again. It did make him feel lonely, but like his mother would say 'it's better to be alone then to be in bad company'. Eating his lunch, he looked out the window, the weather has been getting warmer. Something he looked forward to every year. Winter was bothersome with the freezing weather and snow.

Another day passed without any altercations. Why did some students feel like they needed to pick a fight with him? He was a pacifist. As he collected his things he noticed a student pass by. He seemed out of it, causing him to worry for his well-being. But once he finished collecting his things, he was gone.

As for hope of change, it diminished more and more through the passing days. It was no use trying to call for anything because good things did not happen to people like him.

Good things happened to cheerful people, those that went out and accomplished things. Or people like the ones that gets top scores in the whole school.

Good things only happened to those people.

It was Wednesday when he walked into his house, and found him drunk. His step-father had been a complete different person when they had met, but now Kazue was a punching bag for stress.

"Oh that child is back" said the mother as she wrapped her hands around the older male. Trying to ignore the two he attempted to pass by but soon enough it went dark.

The next morning his body felt numb because of the beating he'd taken the night before, bruises filled his chest as he could've sworn something was broken.

Bandages and clothing were put on his body and he left home.

Hotaka arrived home without any problems. He carried the groceries into the kitchen. Putting them away, before starting on dinner. He felt a bit more nostalgic of his father and decided to cook something traditional. To keep his memory alive. His mother arrived from work. He tired body perked at the smell of moqueca.

"I'm home!" She greeted, removing her shoes as she entered. Setting her purse on the counter.

"Welcome home! I thought it'd be nice to have moqueca for dinner. Though...It's pretty simple."

"Well your father did say that some ingredients can't be found here."

He gave a nod. His mother sat down, rubbing her shoulders. A sadness apparent in her eyes, before she perked up again.

"Well I'm sure it'll be tasty! Let's eat."

He smiled serving her a bowl of the fish stew, before sitting across from her.

The next day, he dressed quickly. The alarm hadn't gone off, causing him to be late for school. Running out the door, he nearly bumped into passerby. Nearly making it in time, the last bell began to ring. With a sigh of defeat he slowed down, entering his classroom a few minutes too late.

Like usual he was quiet, did the required work and nothing else. Although Kazue was a complete wrecked emotionally and physically his grades did exceed. Not the top of the school but never bellow a B, at one point he'd told himself that if he did god he could move to a University far away. But that time seemed so far away.

Slightly he coughed, making a wave of pain to run down his spine. His hand came up to his forehead to reveal a fever, quite a bad one too.

'damn' he thought to himself imagining coming home to those two again.

His sensei gave him a sour look. "You're late, Basurto-kun. Please take your seat and next time be here on time."

Hotaka nodded, making his way towards his seat. Sitting down and taking out his supplies quietly. Not wanting to make more of a scene than he had already/

For the remainder of the day, it appeared like he had a cloud over his head. He nearly made it out of the shoe lockers, when the sound of snickering caught his attention.

"Ho-baka! Where are you going in such a hurry? Don't you wanna hang out with us?"

He turned to see a group of boys, he gave them a huge grin.

"Hello, fellas! Well, I'd love to hang out, but I need to go. Have some errands to run. Maybe next time!"

The leader gave a snort. "It doesn't matter. Come with us."

He grabbed Hotaka's arm. Hotaka tried to pull away. His grin never faltering.

"Fine, since you asked so nicely, I'll go along with you."

After lunch Kazue's breath came heavy and his back was cold and sweaty. The fever really was taking the best of him, but he couldn't ask for anything else since he simply bandaged the wounds, they were probably infected now. Without failing he acted out normal, wrote notes, payed attention, and remained alive.

That afternoon though, when the bell rung Kazue decided to never return home. There wasn't much for him to get back in the house, because his clothes where school uniform and small garments that did nothing for him.

'I'll stay here until I get better' he told himself shaking slightly as he walked to the rooftop.

The door opened slightly and Kazue stepped out into the afternoon light.

The boys led Hotaka to a private area on campus. They surrounded him, inching closer to him. His smile never wavering as they gave menacing glares. One of the boys grew angry and uncomfortable of his smile and threw a punch. Making his head snap to the left. Blood spilling from his broken lip.

"Get rid of that smile! It's annoying!"

Hotaka wiped the blood with his sleeve. He turned to the guy, giving a small smile.

"I apologize. Is this one any better?"

This just caused them to ambush him. He took each punch and kick without a sound.

After a while, they grew tired and left. Leaving him a bloody mess. Standing up, he headed to the nurse's office to get bandaged up. His body ached and it was painful to breathe, but he didn't mind. As long as they didn't cause problems to anyone else, he was happy to take their beatings.

It was late afternoon that Kazue finally gave up, his vision was so blurry and his head hurt so much that he could barely manage to walk.

Slowly he left his empty classroom and headed down to the nurses room where he could find something to reduce the fever and correctly clean the wounds.

The school should've been empty besides the clubs that remained late.

Slowly Kazue walked down the hallway breath coming in heavy, the door to the nurses room was basically thrown open and he stepped in. Everything was empty, or at least it seemed that way from the little he could see, so Kazue made way to the emergency kits that laid out across the counters.

His shirt was removed to reveal a back full of bruises and cuts. His chest was no better but he could easily spot the cut that had most likely given him the fever.

It had been when the old man lost his cool the previous night and threw a broke glass at him, it could've cut worse but it still did the damage.

Taking a gauze he filled it up with alcohol and began to rub against the disgusting cut

"Ahh..mmmh" he moaned in pain but refused to scream holding in everything, keeping the pain at the back of his throat.

Blood came out of the wound and he continued to clean it removing all the puss and infected sections. Finally it was covered with ointment and a large bandage that would provide enough protection until the next cleaning.

Sighing he closed his eyes and places his head against the counter, composing himself from the terrible experience.

Hotaka entered the nurse's office, the nurse had left to attend to some matters elsewhere. Giving him a chance to clean his wounds, before she arrived. He was covered in bruises and the only cuts appeared to be on his cheek, hands and bottom lip. He wasn't a fighter, unless someone had intentionally hurt a defenseless, innocent person. He couldn't just sit there and watch. His mother had worried of the fights he had gotten into in the past, but he would shrug it off. Feeling a bit guilty, since his mother hates seeing him so beaten up.

As he held an icepack on his swollen cheek, he heard someone enter. He assumed it was the nurse or another student. He jumped at hearing a groan of pain. Peaking from where he sat, he saw the badly bruised back of a boy. He stood up and walked over to the boy.

"Do you need help? Those are some nasty bruises."

The sound of someone else surprised him since initially Kazue had not seen anyone.

"Don't worry about it" he says weakly not bothering to look up knowing that the slightest move would send him crashing to the floor from the pain and headache.

His breathing had gotten better now and not as agitated yet he hated that someone was standing over him seeing his bare back and probably everything else that was on display to show.

Hotaka furrowed his brows. He was rather worried of the boy. He looked to be in need of help, but he didn't appear to want any assistance from anyone. Biting his lip, he stayed put.

"I could apply some ointment for your bruises. They look rather nasty and painful."

He took a step over to the boy.

"If you don't want my help, then here."

He set the ointment besides the bruised boy.

"Well...Bye."

HE walked out of the room. Not giving the boy a glance as he left.

He didn't get to see a face, just the small bottle of ointment that stood a few centimeters away from Kazue.

"Thank you" he murmured reaching for the bottle and applying it throughout.

Some time later, after taking pills, Kazue passed by his locker and took out the gym clothing he kept there. Quickly he returned to the nurses room and took shelter in a far away bed.

The curtains around the bed where closed and if the alarmed run correctly he would wake up in time for the next time.

It wasn't long until sleep took Kazue, a much needed one at that.

Hotaka headed home after grabbing his bag from his locker. His thoughts would drift to the bruised boy. His heart ached for him. Was that boy being bullied?

He arrived home, heading to his room to start on his homework until it was time to begin on homework. He was still present in his thoughts. He finally came to a decision, he was going to find a way to help that boy. Nobody deserved to go through such horrendous bullying.

The next morning everything seemed to be much clearer and better, his head did not hurt and the wound seemed to stop aching. Quickly he washed his face and hands, and changed everything like he'd done the day before, just in time for class and to leave the nurses' room.

The class was still fairly empty when he arrived but after going to buy some bread most of the students showed up.

The day proceeded as normal

Hotaka woke up rather sore from the beating he took yesterday, but didn't mind it much. He changed into a clean uniform and left for school. He had forgotten about the boy, until he approached the school. He didn't get a chance to see his face and wondered who he was. He doubted he has him in any class. He'd have noticed.

Sitting in his sit, he gazed out the window. It was a rather warm day today, but it was so bright out. He enjoyed these days.

Despite the activities, and the sunny day Kazue remained numb. It seemed that the beating from two days ago had triggered a complete depressive state in him, not only that but he still had no intention of returning home.

'Honestly does it even matter' he told himself

The surroundings, for him, were always dark almost like living a monotone hell, nothing chancing, nothing growing better.

It was then and there that it hit him.

'I can free myself' and happily almost like a crazy person he began to conclude that 'I can be free from this hell. I'll die'

There were many forms for him to do it but a quick and easy one would surely be most effective. A quick conclusion, that pills and cutting would not do the trick in fact it would be like childs play. His eye landed on the outside window as he was deep in though until he noticed the busy street across from the school. And then his decision was made.

Hotaka returned his attention to his teacher as she spoke. Taking careful notes, going about his day like always. Today is a brand new day! He thought to himself with a smile on his features. Whenever things go bad it's best to just take a deep breathe and slow down. Take things in and make the best of a bad situation. He lived by these words. When his father was on his deathbed, he would pat his head, telling him not to shed tears over him. Live and be happy. These were his father's last words to him. He never remembered shedding tears for him. Just a tightness in his chest that made it difficult to breathe.

It was concluded, by no one, that Kazue had gone crazy. His excitement could almost not be contained by the wanting to...disappear or so he'd been calling it.

Without a second thought the second the bell run he stood from his chair and packed his stuff. Smiling down on his phone he turned it off ad walked towards the roof top there he remained watching the sun for a long time. He could have sworn he also feel asleep, but awoke some time later. Quickly he checked the road and saw it was as busy as ever.

Kazue exited the roof, walked down the stairs, and changed his shoes before steeping through the schools exit.

No one seem to be around but from some distance one could hear the baseball team practicing, the bat hit the ball and a few laughs were heard.

Slowly he took one step at a time screaming 'freedom, freedom' in his head as he approach a busy street.

Centimeters away he watch and waited until a large bus came into view and he took a step closer while the next was slowly stepping on the road where the large machine would hit him.

Cleaning duty was assigned to Hotaka and another fellow known as Akihiko.

"Hey, mind taking over my part of the cleaning today? I need to go pick up my girlfriend. See ya!"

He left before getting a chance to give his answer. He sighed and did both their parts of their cleaning duty.

This caused him to take longer than usual, he returned the cleaning products in the custodial closet. Walking casually to his locker and changed shoes. He stepped out of the building, shielding his eyes from the midday sun. As he walked out of the school building, he noticed someone standing awfully close to the busiest road in the area. He saw at the corner of his eye a bus speeding close by. His eyes widened in shock as he watched the boy step off the sidewalk and directly in front of the bus. Without thinking, Hotaka ran towards him. Grabbing his arm and pulling him out of the way. Causing him to fall backwards.

Kazue's back hit hard against the ground but his head fell softly. His eyes closed and heart beating fast: up until then he had not been thinking correctly.

His eyes were closed for sometime while his hand held to something for his dear life.

Breaths came hard and tears came in large drops over his flushed face. Without a care he began to cry against a persons chest.

It didn't take long to register that someone had saved him, and now Kazue's hand held tightly to the back of the boy's shirt and while his face dug deeper into his broad chest.
