Saga
Hello, dear users. I don't watch news, actually, I don't watch TV. Some people might think it's...a kind of ignorance? I mean, 'not knowing what the world is to' yet speaking of opinions. But I tell you one thing, I don't need a TV to know what to world came to. Also, I don't need a TV just that someone tells me about the misery, the crimes, the greed, the society that evolves around money. But what the TV would never tell you is, about humanity. I am not sure that movies/TV shows would convey that, too. In fact, I am not sure whether that is part of the Matrix we live in or just a way for us to break free. But when you think about it, projected things by the Matrix wouldn't help you break free from it. A few days ago Key told me about a huge earthquake in Japan. I thought, 'It is going to be alright. I mean...it's Japan! If anything, they know the best how to survive.' Yet, last night I felt a bit ...distressed. Because I, indeed, am a part of the Matrix. I guess all of us think that way, probably. "If it's Japan, it's going to be alright! Because of the many disasters that had happened, they had proved how strong the nation is." Yes. That's not wrong though. But I saw a message, pure feelings poured into a text - speaking of the power of words, huh. So I thought, "Am I so..ignorant and brain-washed?" People suffer and yet we go, "It's gonna be okay." And then we brush it off. Of course, I don't say that everyone does it. I am speaking of myself. Therefore I recalled one time in my life when I folded the famous 'Senbazuru', or known more as, 'Thousand Origami Cranes'. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the Gods. And back then I folded them with the wish that Japan would rise once again, high above the horizon just like the sun. I thought, since I give the themes for the contests, we should actually do something for Japan. Even if it doesn't reach each next civilian, the thoughts of praying, love and wishing for the best are something enormous when united. Or so do I believe. Thus, the upcoming month, dear users, would be a pure dedication, a series of things we'll do, for Japan. And as an ending to my 'opening speech', I'd like you to read what I read last night. original poster: kumako365jp text in English: It’s been five days already since we had that mega quake in Kumamoto. The quake has not yet been blown over, we still can’t see what’s coming next and when. This time, unlike the terrible earthquakes in Tohoku in 2011 or Kobe in 1995, big quakes keep coming repeatedly for days. This is what we have never experienced in the past. Most Japanese buildings can endure large earthquakes, if it’s hit once, or twice. But this time, you know, they have been damaged many times already in such a short while, and in the consequence many houses and buildings have been torn down. If it wasn’t in Japan, I think totally everything has been torn down to pieces already. Fortunately, there hasn’t been big tsunami so far, because the hypocenter is relatively shallow. Without tsunami(and that flooded power plant things), the news doesn’t look as sensational and appealing as it was in 2011, but in fact, I think, this earthquake in Kumamoto is more serious than it looks now. Our earthquake experts are real experts of earthquakes in the world, and we are probably more prepared for future earthquakes than any other countries. But now, even our earthquakes experts declare that they really can’t tell how this Kumamoto earthquake may stimulate other places and when and where the next big quake can happen in Japan. (while I’m writing this, my iPhone told me there was another big earthquake in Kumamoto…) Well, actually, there is nothing much we can do at the moment except just keeping an eye carefully. I think it is more important that people who are living far enough from damaged area keep ordinary life and keep economy rolling rather than stop and keep quiet. I have a very complicated feeling when I post some happy-looking photos on tumblr while I actually watch terrible news on tv and feel so nervous about it. What I wanted to say is that please do not underestimate this natural disaster that’s happening in Japan right now. I will keep posting what I see everyday, and many of them look peaceful as ever, and I think it’s ok because that’s what I’m seeing. But please, keep praying for Japan, because we have been really badly damaged now.

addyLicious
I share the same feeling, that while I am up to date with the news, those are only reminders of what's happening and not what is REALLY happening there in Japan. Yes we have been offered the situation but what the news doesn't really implant on us is the fear of what's to come. That distressful feeling of helplessness in a way that no one can predict what will happen yet everyone knows bad things are coming. In my mind, I always say, this is Japan; a first-world country, one of the leading in most aspects of living yet they are also like any of us who experiences the hardships, the disasters of nature and while we know the nation is strong, repeatedly being shaken by earthquakes and such is life-changing. I fear earthquakes the most because it is so very unpredictable and you cannot estimate the damage it may bring. My cousin is working in Japan and while I know he is safe, the unsettling feeling of knowing that tragedy may strike again is enough to shake me up. I am praying for Japan. In my heart I feel like I am a citizen of the country even if I am not residing there. Japan has been really close to my heart and everyone's safety over there is what I'm hoping for. Guest Robuta
An earthquake or any natural disaster is truly very scary, as it is... Natural. It is something beyond our power and when it strikes, only the people who are actually living it can understand the real fear of being the "lucky" or unlucky one that day... When I went to volunteer in Nepal last year after that big earthquake had happend, it was not over. There was still earthquakes going on each day, but was just not reported on the news. But I remember everything, people coming to me to tell their story, the newly wedded wife who got crushed by his own apartment right in front of his eyes, the hard aftermath, when no one could go home for days and slept on the street all together, them yelling an pulling me out when the ground shook "a little" to go outside right away ... Of course, we can't truly understand what they went through... But you are right @Saga to say that just because we don't fully understand, doesn't mean that we have to think it's going to be alright... Don't get me wrong, I might be one of them, but I guess this is how "selfish" us human being are

412Chie
Disasters happened in almost every corner of this world. They came with different kind of shape. They could come in the shape of earthquakes, floods, typhoons, volcanoes, tsunami or war. The point is, they caused grief wherever, whenever they come. We know for sure, earthquake and tsunami could be said, a regular thing that's happened in Japan, it was so often, that's a kindergartener knows what to do if an earthquake come to happen. Don't get me wrong! I'm not taking this lightly, heck! Half of my friends are working there, and one of my cousin also in Japan. It just that most Japanese already aware of this, they've come prepared. They teach their youngster what to do when it's happen, so that they could reduce the casualties, eliminating it if possible. Sure, I'm grieving over it. I'm still can't forget tsunami that's wrecking havoc around pacific coast of Japan. My heart couldn't rest easy, because most of my friend was situated in that same coast. I could breathe easier when I got news, none of them come to harm. Yeah, they missing a lot of peoples. Can I remind you about tsunami 2004 that's killed 200k, 169k happened in Sumatra, Indonesia? I'm still grieving over that. Not long ago, I saw a news about one of the city in Europe was caught in floods, one of the biggest floods in years. I'm forgot which city is it, because now I'm grieving about a heavy floods that happened in Purworejo, Indonesia. So, yeah. Let's pray for Japan! May Japan keep strong and kicking. While you're at it, I'm humbly asked for you to also pray for my hometown, Indonesia. May us be given a strength to face this world and all of its difficulties. Thank you, Ayu
