Americandragon
I read somewhere it's only exclusive to japan. The reason why I ask is because if you have not guessed by my username already lol I am American and I'm writing a fantasy yaoi novel. I also don't know if it would be considered young adult or adult but the main characters that are part of the yaoi are legal aged teenagers. One is 18, one is 20, one is 19. It has some intense sex scenes but it's also a plot so it's more than just sex
Kujaku
From what I know, yes, yaoi is a term exclusively to Japan. Your novel would most likely fall into the M/M novel genre. Also, in novels, young adults are usually characters between 15 and 20yo, so that makes your novel YA.
Narumiya
if your book has intense sex scenes, i don't think it'll fall into the young adult category. maybe this other genre called new adult? i think new adult books can have explicit sex scenes. as for the term yaoi... yeah, i tend to use that term exclusively for japanese media, given that it's a japanese term. for stuff that isn't from japan, i use "m/m" or "boys' love" or any other similar term. :

Kujaku
Please Register/ Sign In, in order to see the links. is a developing genre of fiction with protagonists in the 18–30 age bracket and Please Register/ Sign In, in order to see the links. often define the category as literature traditionally written for ages ranging from 15 to early 20s [according to wiki], so your novel should be YA. Yea you are right. I really don't see why it shouldn't be YA. YA books can have sex scenes too. The homosexuality shouldn't change it to adult to me, the characters are just like any other young adult characters
Americandragon
I forgot to mention there is a 15 year old guy but he is not doing any sexual stuff he is just frieėnds with the 18 year old and the 15 year old has a 14 year old female love interest but of course none of my underage characters participate in sex and there is only boy and boy sex scenes in my book The 14 year old girl and the 15 year old are not major characters though
Narumiya
i've honestly never seen a young adult book with explicit and intense sex scenes tho, but that's just my two cents. i didn't mean to imply that the homosexuality wouldn't make it young adult. keep in mind that young adult readers are still largely underage which means that even if most of them know about the birds and the bees anyway, it's still illegal to sell them something that has explicit sexual content in it. even if you say that the characters in the book aren't underage, that doesn't have much bearing in the fact that young adult books, by definition, target an underage market whose parents might still monitor their reading habits and disapprove of anything with explicit stuff in it. shrugs. that's just my two cents tho. i mean you still have people who started reading stuff while underage (like me, all those years ago) but i got into so much trouble when my parents found out i read the intense stuff while still a minor. I really wanted it to be young adult but I need the intense sex scenes because my plot requires it. My intention at first was to make a light hearted fantasy BL young adult novel but it is definitely an adult BL novel now lol. It feels different writing these scenes versus me reading them in novels I feel like a whole new level of pervert after writing it
Americandragon
Thanks, now I know what age category of literary agents to send it to once I'm done writing and editing it.
