YLove
What is the most important thing for you in a yaoi manga? I mean, what makes you like a yaoi manga that is not brilliant from other points of view? The art, the plot, the way the characters are built, the sex scenes...? For me it's the art, the story, the plot and the characters' behaviour. There are mangas that are pretty strange drawn, but if I like the characters and the plot is interseting, I would surely like it. On the other side, there are mangas that are brilliantly drawn, but they lack plot, action. Well, those mangas are a punishment for me... :hamtaro-005 (5):
yaoifangirl
For me it's the characters. If I like the characters, everything would go :hamtaro-005 (6):
Rei
I think I need a bit of everything in order to really like a manga/anime, but the most important is the way the characters are built. I remember reading a yaoi manga some time ago (can't remember the title exactly) and the art really sucked, the plot wasn't a big deal either, but I liked the characters. They were so sweet and I just couldn't abandon that manga cause I wanted to see those characters more...
Justme
For me it's the sex scenes... if they are hot (and many) any bad drawn manga would be ok :hamtaro-005 (5):
Nena21
I would love any manga if it has many hot hot sex scenes. I don't really care about the story and the way it is drawn, as long as the sex scenes are well drawn :hamtaro-005 (6):
Phong Y
well, .... the art & the character's personality & the story & the ending (sad eding or happy ending) i don't want to finish reading with a bad mood ....although i can't prevent this sometimes ...:msn_red_fox 18 and... to me, sex scene is necessary but not the most importan thing
yaoi-fangirl01
For me it is the plot, the art and the characters, all three are important to me not to say I don't read mangas that don't have one of these three points but normally it is a manga that has all three that makes me fall in love with it.:msn_red_fox
JenovaVII
In my opinion every factor has a certain degree of important that contributes to the manga as a whole. While some have more influence than other, each one matters individualy. For me, what's more important is the plot line, the art and the character development. While I may not like the particular art style on its own, if it fits the story, and portrays its depth and can convey it's atmosphere to the reader, I will certainly love it infinitely more than a manga whose art is drop dead beautiful but, like a piece of certain puzzle does not fit in other that not its original, it doesn't complement the story and instead just looks like it does not belong there, giving the manga an akwardness while reading that simply should not exist. This factor is so crytical for me that if it is not, at least minimaly, satisfied, it's reason enough for me to drop that manga.:msn_red_fox 16 I say this because for me yaoi is not just gay porn, that I read simply because I want to see hot bishonen having hot butt sex. Of course there is that too, there's not use in denying it. But I love to death yaoi that has great art, great art whose fits the plot, plot that is exciting and interesting, with characters that make you laugh until your throat is sore, and cry until you can't take the headache, and smirk as you think you've seen the hotest guy in creation. :msn_red_fox 9 The plot is essential. It needs to be interesting, captivating and unpredictable. As long as my interest is satisfied, and I enjoy it enough to be chained by it and forced to sit and read as if my life is dependent on it, I won't mind the (extreme) predictability that much. A~ah it does feel nice to be surprised with some plot twists :Red_fox11: At last, the dreaded topic (!) of character evolution throughout the story... Most of the times there is none, and I almost despair. :Red_fox12: Sometimes there is some here and there, and it brings a smile to my face. Rarely there is a good amount, and I thank the master mind behind it for existing. I find a nice feeling of completion in a yaoi manga when the characters grow with their experiences and/or journeys, either psychologicaly or physicaly. I do not really mind the pshysical part per see, what matters the most is indeed the psychological. A great yaoi manga forces you to tear up at the angst, and tear up once again because you cannot stop laughing, and blush at the smexy guys and equally smexy sex scenes, and gasp in surprise at the climax of the story. :Red_fox: It's extremely rare to find a yaoi like that, unfortunaly. But when you have a taste of one of them, yaoi with only porn as a proposit won't satisfy you anymore.
Rei
@ JenovaVII OK, so this is the best post I've read in a while... You're perfectly right, I totally agree! Really enjoyed reading your post!
Macys
JenovaVII's post was really interesting and well, you said pretty much everything what I had in mind... Indeed each of these must be present even in a small degree to make a manga brilliant.
Morinaga's Girl
For me its the characters. If I like the characters, everything's fine! And also, I tend to prefer mangas that are funny, the sad ones kinda make me depressed ... :cuteonion51:

Leslie_LC
I totally agree with JenovaVII All those components make a whole and if one of them is missing, you would certainly feel it at some point while reading the manga. I'm not saying that I only like mangas that take all these elements to perfection... I even read lots of mangas that were having only one of those and even liked them. But, for a manga to be on the edge of perfection, it does need all those features.

animegirl
The most important thing for me is the plot and the characters. Like in Haru wo Daite Ita... which is my favorite manga. The plot is so sweet, the characters are so cute and sweet and the relatioship between them is so beautiful and well presented :7yoyo10:
yojichan
For me, the story is a key factor for me to get hooked in a manga. Whether it blows my mind or leave me wanting for more despite its cheesy predictability, the story has to be really good. A manga may not have the most beautiful artwork, some can still be quite raw and crude but it's the story that will propel it all the way till the end. I've read manga where the artwork is just gorgeous but falls flat story wise. Some have lots of sex enough to titillate an entire stadium full of fan girls but running on a tedious story. I would walk out of the stadium. Easy. I won't even look back. I like a manga that has redemption in the end and a conflict. I'm not too picky but these two things have to be present. I don't like having to read the manga and feel cheated in the end. I also super hate disjointed scenes. Like the mangaka is running around confused as to how to end the story. And what exactly is being accomplished here. I like cheese but too much of that makes me lose interest. Another essential factor for me is characterization. It has to be consistent and engaging yet has a good balance of unpredictability. I like the element of surprise. I like angsty characters. I like drama. I like comedy. I want romance. I want passion and desperation and devotion. I don't care whether it's a oneshot or several volumes. None of these matter for as long as all of the above mentioned qualities are satisfied. I have found all that in my top 3 - Kizuna, Love Mode and Haru wo Daiteta. Great story. Amazing characterizations. Terrific artwork. Really hot intimate scenes. Consistency. Balanced predictability and element of surprise. Engaging. It has conflict and redemption.

Nana22
All i can say is that I absolutely agree with all of you. I think everything is just as important! If one thing is missing everything's messed up, and it would lose the effect of being a perfect yaoi :hamtaro-005 (6):

lilredphoenix
I have to say there has to be some really good sex scenes of course bec that's what I am going for here. Then the characters need to be drawn well, story line needs to flow and connect and there has to be some type of plot lastly.

dr.dinysios
JenovaVII really said it all. :hamtaro-005 (5): Personally, I like a good plot, good character development and smexy sex scenes. I'm not too picky about my heart work, though the huge-ass hands in JJR sometimes scare me. :cuteonion55:Don't get me wrong, I like big hands, my boyfriend has big hands, but the hands in JJR are almost disproportionate..... 'cept for Nowaki's..... Nowaki's just gigantic compared to Hiro-san. onion4
<3Gaara
Personally I like the storyline, but the art also has to be good, if I don't like the art I usually don't read very much Not really sex scenes, expecially if they are in every second chapter -_-
