Being a rookie means you're at the receiving end of jokes and jabs that has been cultivated and inherited from cop to cop from the very first rookie joke and hazing. Gabriel understood the process of initiating a new member into a team, through a ritual that would endear him to the group and at the same time make sure he knew his place. He'd already been a rookie once, at the first unit, and now he was a rookie again.

Gabriel bore it well. He made sure to smile and take the jokes in stride, even give a little back when he was able. His partner was a woman about ten years older than he was, Jenna Abrams, a sturdy woman with a tom-boyish charm and warm brown eyes.

Today was a slow day, they had finished up their last two cases yesterday and there had been a lilt in crime. Good for the city but boring for the detectives. It meant catching up on paperwork and there was always paperwork.

Sitting behind his desk, surfing through the local newspaper, Gabriel felt like there were pixels of boredom in his eyes. Jenna was talking with the captain a few desks away, hand on her hip and grim expression. The captain looked grim as well. He focused back to the screen, skimming over headlines but not finding anything of interest.

“Picket.”

Now the Captain was at his desk, arms crossed over his chest in a defensive stance. This can't be good, Gabriel thought and turned toward his captain. “Yes?”

“Jenna had to go home, kid's ill, so that leaves you without a partner.” the captain informed, a slight smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “Can't have you working alone now, can we Rookie?”

“No, Sir?” he wasn't sure were this was going.

“So, there's this reporter, we're told to let him get a story. Something the brass has cooked up, relations with the public and what not.” and now Gabriel could already picture how the rest of the conversation would go, with resignation he nodded for the captain to continue. “You will let him tag along, go to robberies or missing persons and get a case from them. Should be enough for you to handle on your own.”

“Right, thank you for this opportunity, Sir.” Gabriel drawled.

“Can it, Rookie. Just keep that reporter out of trouble.”

The Captain patted him on the head, like a dog, and grinned before heading back towards his office. Someone snickered behind him. With a sigh Gabriel turned back to scroll down the newspaper again. A reporter, he smiled. This could be good, maybe he would be able to turn this around and in the end look like a good team member for taking the reporter and maybe even some positive light through an article. It could be a good thing for someone wanting to climb the political ladder inside the police, it could also turn out bad but he'd just have to wait and see what kind of character this reporter was.

For now all he could do was wait for the reporter to show up.

Anniversaries are usually associated with celebration. It is especially so in the working environment where celebrations are used as a form of stress relieving. However, such common working etiquette simply does not apply to Kelvin. One reason is his spawn of Hitler boss, Arthur, being a limping dick to him; another is kelvin himself not really wanting to. He tried, however, hinting his boss about this matter. He hoped that this demon in human clothing would at least have the heart to allow him to take a half-day work off.

"Mhmm.. so today marks your third year at work huh..." Arthur said nonchalantly, scanning through several documents piled on his desk.

"Yes, sir." monotonously, Kelvin said while he continued. "I plan take this afternoon schedule off."

"Sure, no problem. You can leave as soon as you..." Arthur paused, picking a thin folder atop his desk handing it over. ".. as soon as you finish this."

Kelvin knew that his boss wasn't going to let him go that easily. He expected that much. But as soon as he checked the folder's content, the 27 year old reporter's expression turned sour. He shot a glance towards his boss, who was watching him with amused eyes.

"Sir, I-" halfway through Kelvin's agitated response, he was quickly cut off by his boss

"Ahh! I should be leaving." Arthur stood up and picked his jacket, leaving not a second later. He chanced a smirked directed towards Kelvin, obviously doing so for Kelvin to see this.

Everything happened so fast. Kelvin couldn't respond quick enough and in the next few seconds, the door was slammed close and his boss was gone. This left a dismayed reporter, holding a single folder with one hand, the other free hand clenched into fist.

"Damn it. I should have known!" Kelvin cursed and slammed his hands over his own desk. His co-workers glanced at him and gossiped in the process. Not really caring and not wanting to involve themselves, they resumed what they were previously doing.

Kelvin scrutinized the document plastered inside the folder. He didn't even have to finish reading everything to understand what Arthur gave him. It was work usually given to newbie reporters - gathering sources. He himself was a newbie in the field once. He remembered running around the city, creeping around police stations, fire stations, hospitals, morgues and many other institutions where scoops are likely to appear. Sometimes he was lucky enough to be given information or be allowed to tag along whenever something occurs. But most of the times, he was turned away like how passersby would usually treat a beggar.

Kelvin packed the things he will be needing: ordinary recorder, hidden recorder, smartphone, extra battery, extra set of clothes, energy bars, laptop and many more. When he was done, Kelvin took his backpack and jacket before leaving for the police station he was sent to.

The day was supposed to be like any other. Yes, it was a day others may want to celebrate, but to Kelvin with no one to celebrate with and not being the type get sentimental over petty things, the day should have swiftly pass by and not be placed in this predicament.

After an hour cursing his boss in mind and likewise the traffic jam which lasted forever and the taxi driver who never stopped talking, Kelvin set foot inside the police station. He knew this wasn't going to be pleasing and he knew this will be tiresome as hell. The twenty-seven year old reporter sighed in resignation as he thought to himself, "If I'm gonna do this, I might as well do this right".

Kelvin trudged along the hallway and stopped in front of a familiar door. He knocked for the purpose of showing respect or for whatever etiquette it served before turning the knob, opening the door, and walking into the office.

"Hi. I'm Kelvin Keith. A reporter.", he said without much enthusiasm, his eyes looking like it belonged to a dead fish.

Gabriel looked up from his work station as the door to their bull pen opened and an unfamiliar face appeared. He rose up from his chair as the other started to introduce himself, already sure that this was the reporter he'd been told he would handle. The blank stare was a bit unnerving but Gabriel was used to faking it and didn't really care so he reached out a hand to greet the other with a firm hand shake. Making sure to grip the other firmly and warmly as he introduced himself.

“Hello, I'm Gabriel Picket, you'll be riding with me today.”he said before stepping back to the desk, sat down and swept his hand toward an empty chair beside the desk. It was a visitors chair, not the most comfortable but comfortable enough. “Please take a seat. I'd like to know if you have any requests or if there is something I should know? There is also the basic instructions of what you will be allowed to do and not do during our time together.”

Sliding a pamphlet over toward the other with the headline “Riding along, the 'do's and dont's'” Gabriel sent a charming smile toward the reporter, briefly flashing his white teeth, and waited so the other could get a chance to catch up. The pamphlet was a brief instruction as to what it meant to ride along with a detective or police officer but not having any jurisdiction, it all came down to that the other should, in case of something happening, stay out of harms way and not take any action.
