How long has it been since he made a contract with that fool? It was hard to tell after made to leave the surface world. That idiot had the power of a mid level demon at his finger tips he could have had anything his heart desired but he chose to make him leave him alone until the contract was over what a waste of a wish. Granted it was the easiest wish he ever fulfilled, but it was so embarrassing getting summoned and then returning like two seconds later he was made fun of by the other demons.

Heat yawned in his bed as he waited having nothing to do was boring so he made the most of his free time since he couldn't do any other jobs until this one was over which wouldn't be a problem if he was a high class demon. After his third ice sculpture was complete he heard a sort of bell sound before he was whisked up to the surface world it looked like that human's time was up.

“Give me the power of a demon. Let him bestow upon me what I desire.”

Mel thought nothing of it when he opened the book and read those words. All he said was a simple sentence. He really didn’t expect anything to come from it. Heck, he didn’t even think it was a real demon summoning book. He was aware of demons and how to summon them, but he was no expert, which was why, when he was told to flip open a page in the book and read the first line he saw, he did. It was supposed to be a dare.

He had been cleaning his attic and found the leather book buried under a pile of other books. This one stuck out to him, though, because it had an unusual symbol on its cover. He had taken a picture of the symbol and posted it online, curious as to what it could be. Many responders said it was a demon sigil, but it was something Mel had never seen. So, when one responder dared him to open it and read it, his curiosity had gotten the better of him and he did. However, he quickly wished he hadn’t.

Mel was not prepared to end his contract with the demon. Ever since he had summoned him three years ago, he could never forget the first time he saw him, argued with him, and was given a deadline. Now, his time was up. All he could do was pace around his living and watch the clock on his wall. He had crossed off the days on his calendar and was certain today was the day. There was no way he could have miscalculated such an important date.

He wished the demon would arrive a little early or a little late, but not on time. It would be better if he came unexpectedly. That way he wouldn’t know what hit him when his contract ended. Now, he didn’t exactly know how the demon would end his contract, but he could only assume it was by killing him. That was the only way out of the contract that he knew of.

Mel repeatedly glanced at the clock as the end got closer for him. What more could he do? Could he extend his time? Asking the demon to add on more years couldn't hurt. He was going to die, anyway. It's not like he could lose anything else or anything that mattered after he died.

Suddenly, Mel jumped when he heard the calico at his feet meow and the fat gray cat on his couch hiss. He had forgotten about them. Picking the calico cat up from the floor to hold in his arms, he got another surprise when the alarm on his phone rang. He hadn’t even set it. Instinctively, he threw what was in his arms at the horned figure in front of him. His calico cat bounced off the demon and rushed out of the room, along with the fat gray cat.

“Y-You have to give me more time,” Mel stuttered, facing away from the demon. “It’s only been three years,” as if three years were a short time, “Can’t you let me live a little longer?” Mel nervously laughed as though he was trying to make a joke, but he couldn't hide his nerves.

Heat gets to the surface world and the first thing he is greeted with is a cat to the face. He stood there as the cat bounced off him and scurried away with another cat. he watched them run away before looking back at the nervous wreak the human was being right now. Sighing Heat rolled his eyes as he was asked for more time the human was even laughing as if he couldn't cope with what was happening right now. folding his arms Heat stood there waiting for the human to calm down since a panicking human would not be able to listen to him closely.

"Look, Mel right? I told you when we first met that once you read those words out loud you were already bound to the contract and that there was no way out of it accident or not. You wished for me to leave I gave you a time limit for when I would come back to collect your soul. And here I am now we can do this the easy way or the hard way. The easy way is if you give it to me willingly, the hard way is you dying from something other than me, ether way I'm going to get your soul so you might as well give up now your wasting my time." Heat spoke in a low and calming voice as if he has dealt with this many times.

He sighed out a puff of cold air before glancing up a little at the male that was merely two inches taller than him if he didn't add his horns. His chilly blue eyes looked into light brown ones as if looking for an answer.

"So what is your answer?"

Mel didn’t want to admit that the demon was right. He could remember what he said to him as if it had happened yesterday, although he didn’t want to admit it. The most he could do was look defeated, knowing that there was nothing more he could do. He had already tried to ask for extra time, which, clearly, made the demon more impatient. Maybe, instead of begging for time, he could talk his way out of the contract, but, with the options he had, there was a slim chance that would work. Plus, as he was told, there was no way out of the contract. A deal was a deal, be it by agreement or by force. Still, whether he died by the hands of the man in front of him or by something else, it didn’t make much of a difference to the human. The real question was: would he rather be tortured or be killed quickly?

As Mel thought about how much pain he would like to have inflicted on him, he occasionally glanced back at the demon, expecting him to leave. No matter how many times he glanced back, though, his contractor was still there. What could he do to make him disappear? Mel nervously bit his bottom lip, running any and all possible solutions through his mind, and whatever he thought of ended in certain death if he wasn’t persuasive enough. Well, the least he could do was try. Finally, making a decision, the brunette turned to look at the demon.

“I would rather die at the hands of something else than by you,” he spat with a sudden change of attitude, “Even if I am in a contract with you, I don’t want to give you the pleasure of killing me since you won’t do me a favor and extend my time.” Of course, he didn’t forget that such a favor had already been done by the demon, which was why he had reappeared three years later. Mel was purposefully trying to get the demon angry, to actually have the demon want to personally kill him. However, he wouldn’t willingly let the demon kill him unless he was allowed to live longer. In short, he was choosing option two, to have his soul taken by something else, but he didn’t want the demon to let him simply choose that option. His strategy didn’t make much sense, but he hoped it worked.

“Don’t you think having something else kill me is a bit,” Mel paused, trying to think of the word, “Cowardly?” He was dangerously testing the demon. “Are you not powerful enough to kill me yourself? I won’t make it easy for you now, but, if you give me some time, I’ll willingly give myself up. That way you can save your energy and there won’t be an injury on you. If you try to take me at present, I’ll make sure to fight for my life and you’ll definitely come out with lots of scars. Won’t other demons make fun of you for being beaten by a human?” Mel didn’t know what rank this demon was, but he knew there was a hierarchy within the species, and, from the way the individual acted, he was certain he wasn't at the top. Again, he was hoping his strategy would work and his assumption wasn’t wrong.

"Before I die by whatever it is that isn;t you, mind telling me your name? I forget it because you didn't leave a big enough impression when I first summoned you." What Mel was saying was true, he didn't remember his name, but it wasn't because he didn't leave an impression. He was clearly adding fuel to the fire.

Heat stood there as the human was clearly panicking and spouting out nonsense to prolong his life. The demon didn't fall for it as it was a last resort for humans when they were on the verge of death. He stood there waiting for the other to finish his rant. His emotions were on ice as he stared when the other was done insulting him Heat waited a wile so let the human think he was in trouble which he was as the middle class demon froze the human up to his shoulder to hold him in place before opening his mouth to speak.

"You need to be calm and listen to what I am telling you. You need to give me your soul willingly, I can not kill you and take it its against the rules. Also when I said you can die I meant normal human deaths. I can not be involved in your death for example I can not poison you or push you into on coming traffic or curse you. It has to happen to you on its own and once it does your soul will be mine. But I don't feel like waiting that long, also you are a mere mortal you stand no chance against me and my name is Heat." Once he was done speaking he released the human from his icy prison.

Having himself frozen didn’t make Mel any less calm, but it did make him pay more attention to what the demon was saying. Now knowing that he couldn’t have his soul forcefully taken from him made him relax a little. Really, it was up to him to decide when his life would end and he didn’t want to give it up yet. Once he was released from the ice trapping him, his whole body shivered. He felt as though he had opened the door to his freezer and left it open. All he could do was stare at the icy blue eyes of the man parallel to him, which didn’t make him feel any warmer.

Mel stayed silent, wanting to choose his next words carefully before he spoke again. Heat had to think he was crazy, even he knew he was out of it. He had spouted nonsense trying to lengthen his time and he felt like an idiot. He, obviously, didn’t know much about demons. He thought they could do whatever with the human they made a contract with, but, as he was recently told, they had to go by certain guidelines. What those exact guidelines were he didn’t know, but it did help to know the important one.

"You'll have to wait," Mel firmly spoke, "There's no other way you'll be getting my soul unless you wait a little longer." Even though the demon had already waited for him, he dared to make him wait longer. It wasn't his life that was being taken away, after all. He turned away from Heat and stepped into the kitchen, no longer wanting to continue conversing with the demon. He had said what he wanted to say and that was it. Since his soul couldn't be stolen from him, he had less to worry about. "See you later," Mel shouted from the other room as he began to clean his granite countertop.

"Something told me you were going to say that, since I can't get your soul now I can't work so I'll just have to take a vacation till you die." Heat snapped his fingers and out of a cloud of white smoke seat cases appeared. He looked around the house the apartment wasn't super big like his home but it would have to do. Going inside the largest room in the apartment which was Mel's room.

"I will take this room then." The demon began redecorating replacing all of Mel's things with his own. All of the human's belongings we shoved out into the hallway. Taking off his shoes he laid on the bed and relaxed in it as if this place was owned by him.

  • 1 month later...

Mel found the demon to be absolutely useless and even more useless now that he couldn't work. Did he really have no other responsibility than to collect his soul? Hearing a lot of noise coming from his room, Mel stopped cleaning and sped down the hall. However, unaware that his belongings were now collected in the hallway, he tripped over a small wooden box and landed in a pile of clothes and knick-knacks. "Why?" Mel shouted, bewildered, lifting his head and seeing Heat in his room. "Get off my bed. You can't just move in where you don't belong."

It wasn't his problem that Heat couldn't do his job. Well, he may have caused the problem, but that didn't mean he was responsibility for the demon. As far as Mel was concerned, it was the demon's fault that he couln't forcibly take his soul. That would make things easier for the both of them, even if Mel would fight tooth and nail to keep his life. It was only human nature to do such things. Still laying in the pile in the hall, Mel took a deep breath and loudly exhaled. "You need to leave."
