Not only that but some of the books contained darker proceedings such as how they found more centaurs to adopt into the clans ways (killed the human parents) and how they kept the clan members from leaving the books being how their culture really was to its people.

My guess is they didn't want you to go around showing your family those books because then the'd risk getting exposed for more then just small crimes like drugs.
