I stand here alone in the cold, decorated by the white glitter of snow in the centre of Birmingham. It’s the year 2004, embedded in the month of December. It’s the time of year where the Frankfurt Christmas Market opens to the public, and it’s a tradition of mine to visit the bratwurst hut nestled beside the River Rea. Because three years ago, at that exact hut in this specific event, right in the centre of this peculiar city… I met the love of my life.

The hut vendor, my very own ghost of Christmas past and present, is a cheerful lass from up North. Her eyes light up with recognition the moment she sees me saddle up to the stand,

“Ay up, duck! Ar remember you! Red sausage bap, innit?” She declares excitedly, already preparing exactly what I’d order, then looks at the empty space beside me with a cocked eyebrow, “Where’s the lad who’s normally with yer? Car’ forget a face like ‘is every time ‘e tries me currywurst. Mate, it’s proper entertainin’.”

I shuffle uncomfortably, eyes downcast as I answer, “He won’t be coming this year… he’s enlisted.”

“…is that right?” Her cheshire grin falls away. Though as she solemnly passes over the bap, she strains a smile for my sake, “I’ll put some currywurst aside for next time ‘e visits, aw’right? Car’ imagine they’ll be any on the menu in Iraq, innit?”

Her light-hearted humour rings like a familiar melody, taking me back to the day I’d met him. She laughed exactly like that when I’d clumsily bumped into him upon greeting, awkwardly knocking the order out of his hands. I’d never seen such a grief-stricken expression like that over spilt food before then… and when I had offered to buy him a new one, I’d immediately realise the accident of falling in love with the gracious smile he had returned to me.

Looking up at the colourful lights woven through the city, I’m reminded of how he’d bathe in them like spotlights, kissing him in every beautiful place. We’d walk around the streets enraptured by the smell of cooked meat and woodruff incense, carving this scent into my memory like a mark in my soul, claiming it as a treasure I shared with him. The faint harmony of carollers would sing from the church of Saint Martin, adding an almost religious significance to our growing romance – how intense it made me feel, as though he’d irreversibly alter my life in a catalytic cosmic sense.

I think of him every day, but today… the pain of his absence wins. I’d never truly known the depth of my love for him until this separation. The hour before he left in uniform, we cried over fear that our love might diminish over time, like how a wind would blow out a candle… but it turned out like a fan over a bonfire. I search for his likeness in the faces of strangers, craving his ghostly presence to emerge from these lights that shaped his form, and I know it’s all an impossibility…

But I just can’t help myself. Even now, within the blur of the crowds, I can feel him still with me. We’ve made a world of our own in this city, amongst the glittering lights and Christmas festivities. Time has stopped where he is here, stagnated in the moment he stole a shard of my heart.

And it always will be, until he returns from his war… and gives it back to me.

A DAY IN LIFE

The day started the same as always, Ethan got up, got ready and leaved his home. He took the same path he did every morning to get to work, all the while hearing the little birds chirp their melody, it never failed to bring him a feel of calm. He smiled a little smile, he so loved his routine, where everything was in the time and place he expected it to be, no surprises of any kind. The only deviations the ones he decided, like a trip to the library or the afternoon tea with his mom, a visit to the botanic gardens or a hike through the mountain on a weekend.

Today was his turn to open shop, so he hurried his step and looked at the sky, it seemed today might rain. He liked the rain, the smell of wet soil and heavy oxygen in the air, the so called petrichor. When looking out the window while sipping a warm tea, watching the raindrops hit the glass, it dispelled the melancholy he was feeling that sometimes made him space out. He decided to bake pecan pies for today special, he liked the freedom his boss provided to whimsically decide part of the menu and left the choice in his hands.

The air was filled with the aroma of freshly baked pies, he prepared a vanilla scented whipped cream to go with the pie and continue to prep the shop for costumers. In the distance he heard some carolers, this was their last stop on the street and they would surely want something hot to drink to warm up from their rounds. He put the final touches to his cinnamon coffee and took the pigs in a blanket out of the oven. As he placed them in a cooling rack he notice the store bell as it rang signaling the carolers stepping in, among them was his boo Carl who smiled brilliantly at him, coming over to greet him and kissed him sweetly on the lips.

He made his rounds around the tables, making sure everyone had what they needed and then went to sit by his boo as Sara minded the counter. While they sat Carl absentmindedly played with the hair at the back of Ethan’s head. They made plans to visit a friend who was having a party later that day. His shift would end in a couple of hours and Carl told him he would pick him up so they could go home and change then drive to the party and spend the evening together. When the group of carolers finished with their coffee break they all said goodbyes and Carl kissed him telling him his pecan pie was delicious, he murmured something in his ear and went out the door with a naughty smile on his face before Ethan had time to react and blush all over the place.
