I'm currently reading Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman for the challenge and it's ruining me emotionally which is why I wanted to take a break from reading it before it triggers me further. Question is, am I allowed to start on another title while on break from finishing CMBYN?

@Vanlatte

I don't have many answers myself however I did ask Saga earlier regarding the dark/psychological tags and they are considered the same. And to know whether they are dark/psychological we can refer to the official tags as well as the readers' and reviewers' tags on sites like goodreads etc.

As for the BU/NU & Chinese title recommendations, they stand for Baka-updates for Manga titles and Novel Updates for Novel titles. If you look at my list, the cn, kr, and jp titles I have there have links to NU.

Hope this helps :)

Can I use this manga, Ashita wa Docchi Da!, for task 35, a character with blond hair. Does it have to be naturally blond or can it also be dyed blond hair?

Hi, I have a few questions ('tho I'm sure there'll be more along the way...)

1. How many pages MAX so a novel is categorized as short novel? And the nunber of pages is different between mobi, epub, and pdf. Which one would be the standard?

The rule said it can't be short novel, right? But some novel I read are below 200 pages, more than 100 pages in epub. Are they count as short novel or regular novel?

2. For task #2 and #25, psychological category - dark/violent settings, is it based on my opinion if a novel is a psychological category - dark/violent settings?

3. Task #5. Can historical novel be part of this task?

4. Task #14 and #47. The word "manga" actually means "novel" right? [i just want to make sure...]

5. Task #15. Can Dirty Angel by Barbara Elsborg be part of this task? The main character is poor, but his poorness is not the main topic.

6. Task #22a - Read a title with the chara being straight at first. Is this need to be a fanfiction?

7. Task #24. Again, to make sure. First letter in this context means the first letter when the story start right? Or first letter in the title?

8. Task #37. What's BU/NU?

9. Task #41. How many words are count as a long title?

10. Can I put conversation in a novel as a quote?

11. Any Chinese novel recommendation?

[sorry, I'm not good in telling what I mean... Hope you understand n_n" and sorry there're so many questions. I'm sorry too if the question I asked had already been answered before. I read from page 1 to 10 but 95% is about manga's challenge...]

Hello there!! Glad to have you joining us!

Please, don't apologize for your questions. I am here to help you after all.

Re 1. The format you choose to read the book in, it does not matter. It can be mobi, epub, pdf etc. As long as your novel hits at least 20-30 pages [any format counts for that number] it categorizes for the 'short novel'.

What rule stated it can't be a short novel? If anything related to 'cannot be short', it can only be in regard of cheaters trying to fill all these 50 tasks with short novels and act smart on us. The challenge is created to explore, have fun, chat and comment on the hotness. Not only you will get to know more people and more titles, but also win some rewards on our boards. ' v ' Sounds good to me, eh.

Re 2. Task #2 only refers to something psychological - regardless of the topic. It can be a very heartfelt story of a loner, but nothing violent and dark there - right? While task #25 refers to something rather 'sinister' -coughs- so to say.

The teasing aside, 'dark/violent' is indeed psychological but there you can actually play with more sub-genres like rape, murder, gore, torture etc. '_'

Re 3. Yup, it totally fits the criteria.

Re 4. No, it actually literally means manga. Manga readers will have to read two novel titles and novel readers will have to read two manga titles. So, you gotta read two manga titles. Feel free to get suggestions from manga readers on this thread ;D

Re 5. Hmmm...No. I am not saying the topic gotta be it, but at least to be something rather major in the story plot. If it's mentioned only 'once' in between the lines and none of his 'poor' life is stressed out - no, it does not qualify.

Re 6. No. If it HAS to be a fiction/fanfiction, it will be noted in the task itself. ' v '

Re 7. First letter in the title.

Re 8. BU is Bakaupdates and NU is Novelupdates.

Re 9. Weeeeell. As many as you can fit there LMAO -soundedtotallywrong- More than 3 words would be nice.

Re 10. Of course, no one said how long or short the quote must be. As long as you quote something.

Re 11. Hmmmmm. I quite liked Love Late by Lan Lin, or Ti Shen by Bei Tang Mo. Or!! Or True Star [Ju Xing] by Wan Mie Zhi Shang! ' v '

Enjoy your novel hunt!

Re Question is, to be or not to be - huh? '_' Of course, you can read a few titles at once - no one said you can't. As long as you can manage it.

Re Nope, it doesn't matter if he is naturally blond or with dyed hair. ' v ' So, you are good to go with either! And yup, you can use that title for the task.

! :D Wasn't sure if it was allowed and I didn't want to be doubted with my progress with one title while starting with another ^^"

I guess I'll start with Strike Up the Band now since many readers said that it's light. It may help ease the hurt reading Captive and CMBYN has caused me.

Thanks for the clarifications. Like Vanlatte I too presumed that you actually meant novel instead of manga. Guess I'll have to start digging through my mangas, too.

The main char was totally broke, like he didn't have anything because he was dead and was given a second chance. But given that he had 9 life and there were interferences between angel and demon... :cuteonion41:

Re 6. No. If it HAS to be a fiction/fanfiction, it will be noted in the task itself. ' v '

I thought so at first glance, but the #22a made me wonder if it was a part of #22 or not.

Your recommendations really help me! Of all the novels I've read, I somehow never touch Chinese's n_n"

For a few days I've been thinking about something regarding the poll about the game ("Do you think the challenge should be limited to BL only?") but have been wondering whether it still matters, whether it's not too late to say it and whether I should do it here. I'm still not sure of the 'answers' to those but will just leave it here...

I voted for the first option - "Yes, I think, since we are a BL community, we should keep the challenge with BL titles only." It turns out most of us who voted picked this one. But what I've been thinking about is that I'm no longer sure about that. Yes, we're a BL community, so let's have BL-themed challenges/games but... won't it get quite boring if it's only that? And after some time the staff may even run out of ideas for such games. So maybe adding non-BL titles would be good. Of course, not games with only non-BL ones (we're a BL community, after all, so I think at least one of the tasks for the games/challenges must be BL ;D) but adding some different ones would be interesting.

The second option is: "Yes, I only read BL titles to begin with." So what? In this challenge there are some kinds/genres of manga/novels to read that we wouldn't usually pick ourselves but that's what makes it challenging. So you'd need to read (or watch? who knows what game there may be someday) some non-BL titles but who knows, you may even like it!

Well, at least that's my opnion. '_'

I need to rant. I am in absolute need to f*ucking rant.

Normally, when I read novels and the story starts getting crappy, I just drop it and avoid it like the plague until I feel up to trying again. HOWEVER, since this is a challenge, I have to go through this... thing and finish it. And I express this with gritted teeth. This book... This book by Kiki Burrelli titled Waking up (The Omega of His Dreams) is just so... It's giving me headaches. I can't... I don't want to but I have to and it's driving me crazy.

Please tell me how to cope. *cries

I thought it's okay to change the book titles if you can't finished the first book originally chose for that challenge. You just have have to change the start date of reading that book, right?

Just pick another one. For some tasks I even have a few that I found, so I read all of them and then choose the best one to use for the challenge.

is it really okay? I mean it makes sense to just change the title for another and just adjust the date accordingly but isn't the challenge reading something you don't normally get to read or finish reading?

I feel bad for my progress, I'm halfway done with it but I would like to change if it's fine. This book is just frustrating and all over the place. I don't wanna be too harsh on it but it just won't do for me. :(

yes it is, I think its mean to widen your horizon, to discover other kind of novels then what you normaly read. but not all novels in one category is worth reading, I think we are allowed to dig through that pile in that category to fine the one we like.

its mean for you to like other kind of flavor, not to choke on it

Yeah. You're right. I think it is more to explore rather than force. I'll just change to another title then. Thank you

Wonderful participants, does anybody have any suggestions for the "Read a novel that has a very low rating on BU/NU"? Mm.. I understand that this task is supposed to hurt & make me cry, but still maybe someone has suggestions that would not be too terrible? Some underrated treasures, for example?

I have one more question

, tho. is there any reason for 22 & 22a to be numbered that way? Are they supposed to be connected in some way? I'm not sure what it means & why it's numbered like this, so now I'm confused:D

oh I have two questions!!! Sorry if they were asked before^^

for the "read a novel with a long title", would "Come Unto These Yellow Sands" suffice? I'm reading it now & was thinking of placing it there^^'

and for the "read a novel which has less than 2000 views on YO", is it possible to see the number of views in the actual thread? How could one do it? I search for most novels in "Complete BL Novels" search & there you can't see the views. I know you can see them in your newsfeed if you post a comment or you can see them in the thread list, but with the amount of novels on the website or no possibility to search for these threads, it might be a bit difficult, so I was wondering if there was an easier way? I'm still not 100 per cent familiar with all of forums' functions;)
