Name: Sakuya Katahira

Age: 25

Height: 6'1"

Personality: As a teacher, he's stern. As a young man, he makes weird expressions when he's playing video games. He keeps saying that he wants to quit being a teacher, but after several years under his belt, he never does. In fact, he even adds his time by joining as the teacher for the night class.

Sakuya cleared his throat, demanding attention from the new batch of students from the night class in front of him.

Morijima school was a private school who also opened the gates to students who couldn't attend morning classes for various reasons. There were those in the neighborhood who dropped out earlier, who had to work in the morning, who was bedridden for months or years, or just plain delinquents who still attended to be able to get their high school diploma. Due to the troublesome students, the teachers who could handle them were few in between.

If not for his needs to help his parents pay back their house loans, he probably wouldn't do that. Nevertheless, he was still here.

"Good evening," he said, looking carefully to the faces in front of him. To his surprise, there were those who looked like normal students, only without their uniforms. He always thought a lot of these people would be blue-collar workers, trying to get better paying jobs. "My name is Sakuya Katahira, I'll be your homeroom and English teacher for the rest of the year. You may graduate sooner or later depending on your attendance. We will not kick you out if you don't fulfill the requirements, but you will have to repeat at least another semester before you can get your diploma. Everything clear so far?"

"Yes."

That answer only came from several students, a dispirited answer if any. At least this time, he had expected the low level of energy in the room.

"I'll start to call your names one by one, then. Akane Atari?" he started, wanting the session to be over already.

Name: Ryuu Nakamura

Age: 18

Height: 5'3"

Personality: Ryuu is a barely passing school student. He suffers from allergies that usually keep him out of school for a couple of months or even a few at max. He usually goes to school with a face mask. He spends his study halls in the Nurse's office so he can rest and take his medicine.

_________________________________________

"Ryuu, you have to go to your night class so you can catch up on your school work so you can graduate," Ryuu's sister calls out as she just looks at the big bump of blankets, listening to Ryuu sniff and cough, making his sister sigh and then she calls the nurse's office, "hey, this is Kari Nakamura, Ryuu Nakamura's sister. Um he won't be able to attend his night class tonight, he is currently in bad and enduring his allergies." Kari hangs up with a sigh and then leaves Ryuu's room so he can sleep.

Atari checks his phone, reading a text that he got from Ryuu:

Hey.. in bed with my stupid allergies, tell the teacher I am not coming in tonight.

Atari sighs and closes his phone as he stands up, "yup that's me. Uh.. my friend Ryuu should be on the list but apparently he is not coming. Currently suffering with his allergies," he sits back down.

Sakuya threw a sharp look to the very first student he called. Bad news from the get go. What a class.

"Tell your friend to get a doctor's slip, or else this would be marked as absence. No excuse. Keep doing this and he would stay as a student forever," he said. "Our school has made it easy for all of you. Those who were too old to join regular school could attend here, those who only want to add more marks for their attendance could also do so. Don't waste this chance."

He said all of those to Atari, who relayed them verbatim to his friend.

Then Sakuya continued calling all the students' names, all numbering only half of the regular classes. Coincidentally, the first class was also English. Thus he continued giving the lecture.

Late at night, at 9.30 PM, all the classes were over. Actually, those with status as regular students could choose the classes they had to join. Only the worker class had to join everything to be have a full attendance mark. As a homeroom teacher, however, he had to stay around until the end to check on everyone's situations. When he didn't teach, he prepared the materials for the regular classes in the morning.

Somehow, he had this premonition that he would have to go to the nurse's office so often to catch sleep...

Atari looks over at the English teacher and bites his bottom lip as he nods his head, "y..yes sir," he sits back down and quickly texts the information he got from the teacher to Ryuu before closing his phone to focus on the teacher.

As the lecture ends, Atari looks at Professor Sakuya and watches him prepare the morning material for his classes, "well have a good night sir," he watches the other students leave before he left the classroom last. He knew Ryuu didn't do this on purpose he just had really bad allergies. Atari perks his head up as he looks at his phone, seeing Ryuu reply with a simple thumbs up smile emoji, he smiled and then heads outside to go home.

Sakuya's premonition came true. Not because of the night class, but he insisted on playing some more until it was almost dawn. He barely got two hours of sleep before he had to go to the school again.

Thankfully, today he had no morning classes. After letting his face be seen in the teacher's lounge, he walked towards the school infirmary. Of course the school nurse was there.

ayako-hiiragi-54257.jpg?t=1381082360

"Oto-sensei," he greeted the woman, Eri Otoya. There was a wedding ring on her left ring finger. She was happily married and thus, Sakuya didn't have his defenses up towards the lady. "Let me use the corner bed," he said.

"Sure," she replied. "Starting some nightly duties, eh?"

"Don't make it sound so promiscuous." Sakuya's eyes narrowed.

Eri giggled. "You're lucky that the other night class teachers aren't coming so early," she said.

"Unlucky, to be exact. I'm still a junior compared to them, there's no way I can skip morning classes, even though I don't actually have one," he said.

"Bah, I know you, Sakucchi," Eri said, reverting to the name calling. They were childhood friends. Fate told them to have duties in the same school, to Sakuya's surprise. "You must have been playing games again. Don't give me that glare, it doesn't work on me," she said.

"Whatever, Eri. I just want to catch some sleep, okay?" he said.

Eri simply hummed.

Sakuya left her to the corner bed out of four beds separated by curtains in the large infirmary room. It was too bright as the morning sunlight still went through the thin curtain, but it still gave the privacy a teacher needed to sleep at school. Before long, he had fallen asleep.

Ryuu finally got out of bed and coughs softly as he reaches downstairs where is his sister was eating some dinner.

Kari perks her head up with a smile, "hey... look who's finally awake? How are you doing? Want something to eat?"

Ryuu sits down at the table and nods his head, "can.. you get a doctor's note for tomorrow before I go to school? I think.. I am ready to go back. Everyone is going to think I died or something.. other then Atari since I been texting him."

"Hmm? Alright I will get it before work," Kari stands up with a smile as she gets some food for Ryuu, "I am so glad your feeling better.. I always get worried when you have your allergy attacks like that," she sets down a plate in front of Ryuu and rubs her hand through his hair, "so soft.. as always," she giggles as she sits back down and continues eating.

Ryuu tilts his head as he starts eating, glad he was starting to finally taste his food.

Sakuya is one day ahead from Ryuu so I'll just make him sleep uneventfully! xD

Sakuya was too deep asleep that he didn't even hear the alarm. Rooster's cock-a-doodle-do resounded loudly in the infirmary. Eri, who just walked out of the room, immediately hurried back before going to the corner bed and smacked Sakuya right in the head.

"H-- wha?"

"Your alarm is annoying!" Eri said with almost screeching voice. She could turn into medusa when she snapped.

Sakuya yawned big time. "Okay, fine, let me sleep 5 minutes longer---"

"Don't be ridiculous. Is your class the one right before lunchtime? ou have exactly two minutes before your class started!" Eri took a wild guess.

From the widened eyes that Sakuya had, though, she assumed she guessed correctly. Sighing, she only saw the grown up childhood friend of hers tidying up his shirt then his tie, then worn the outer coat on top of them all. It hid wrinkles from being slept on really well.

"Hold on, you still have your bed hair, go to the bathroom before class," she said, helping him.

"Hm... Okay, thank you," he said. In front of her, he wasn't a stern teacher. He was just a young man who tried his best at work.

After he was done eating, Ryuu made his way back to his room and goes back to sleep, curled up on the bed.

As morning approached, Ryuu woke up and notices the doctor's note on his night stand. He sighs as he gets up and gathers his clothes, walking out of his bedroom and walks to the bathroom. Ryuu takes a quick shower and then gets out, drying off and then puts his clothes on.

Wasn't really in the mood to make breakfast so he just grabs his bag, putting the note in his bag and walks out the door.

"Hey, how are you feeling," Atari waits by Ryuu's gate with a smile.

"..tired but I am okay," Ryuu puts on his face mask as he walks with Atari to school.

Once there, Ryuu and Atari go their separate ways with Atari walking to his first class and Ryuu making his way to the nurse's office.

Seeing a teacher was in here, he walks over to the nurse, "Nurse Eri, I brought in a doctor's note."

The nurse looked at the doctor's note that the student brought in and nodded. "Thank you, Nakamura-kun. You should pass this to your homeroom teacher, though. I remember you're in 3-4 class, right? That should be Katahira-sensei's class," she said, mentioning Sakuya's name.

Eri didn't have to guess, the boy had visited this place several times, and she had heard that he went to the hospital so often and it took long most of the times. "I'll let him know, you should go to your class now as it is about to start," she said. Worried about the frail boy, she didn't forget to add, "Whenever you feel under the weather, come here and let me know, all right?"

"Oh, right, Sakucchi, hold up," the nurse said, holding her childhood friend's arm. "A student came and gave me this," she said.

Sakuya frowned as he wore his non-prescriptioned glasses, then nodded. He noticed the name. "If I'm not mistaken, this is the boy who didn't go to the afterschool class yesterday," he said. "Thank you, Otoya-sensei."

"You're welcome, Katahira-sensei," Eri replied with a flat smile. They had gone back to their professional mode.

Without lingering around, Sakuya went on the strides to the nearest bathroom, dampening his hair before combing it down by stolen brush from Eri's desk. The bell rang just before he stepped into the classroom.

"Good morning, everyone," he said in English. It was an hour before lunch, after all. The sun was already high, but it should still constitute as a morning.

"Good morning, Sensei," several students replied in unison.

"No, in my class, call me "teacher". We will get used to speaking in English sooner if we eliminate the necessity to speak in Japanese," he ordered them all. In Japanese, though. Sakuya made a mental note to stop ordering in Japanese after this. "Respond with 'yes, teacher', please," he ordered in English.

"Yes, teacher, please."

Several student giggled when some added the "please" at the end of the sentence.

Sakuya only made a stern look. After all, it was his fault for not being clear enough. "All right, open your book, we will start in---"

Ryuu watches the nurse look after the note. He nods his head as he rubs the back of his head as he coughs a little with a soft sigh. "Alright I will go on my way to the Mr. Katahira's class," he turns around and heads for the door. Ryuu looks over his shoulder and nods his head, "alright I will keep that in mind," he walks out of the nurse's office and heads to the classroom.

He had to go talk to the people at the main office first, letting them know he was back at school and he looks at the clock, seeing class was starting. He walks out of the main office and rushes as fast as he could to the classroom.

Just as class was about to start, Ryuu opens the door and sighs a little, glad he made it before the lesson was being taught. His bag was full of school work he had to do while he was sick. He quickly sits at his desk and takes out his book from his bag as well as all the work he owed Mr. Katahira while he was sick so he knew he wasn't behind in his studies.

Since it was early in the semester, Sakuya didn't recognize half of the class, so he paid no mind to individual students besides those whose name he called from attendance list.

Throughout the class, he managed not to revert back to Japanese. He wondered how much of his words were actually understood by the students, though. He taught in a private school, but it wasn't those upper scale private schools. Instead, it was an average leveled school, and save for several stars who the school supported and some scholarship students, he didn't expect much from the rest of the students, actually. As long as they could pass the midterm and finals, he was just glad for them.

"All right, the class is over. Do your homework from page 12-13," he said, walking back to the teacher's desk as he saw a white envelope that Eri gave to him. "The lunch bell will ring soon, but I must ask Nakamura to follow me to the teacher's lounge," he said in Japanese.

The students whispered among them. Would that Nakamura have any problem with the teacher, so early in the semester?

However, they couldn't gossip too long because the bell was ringing. Sakuya walked ahead of them, but standing beside the door. Several students greeted him as they went to the school cafeteria, trying to get the best menu before they were all taken away. Sakuya just stood there, waiting for a student who would introduce himself as "Nakamura Ryuu" to finally greet him.

Ryuu was trying to really focus on his school work but he was still recovering over being sick so long from school. It was hard to stay focus but Ryuu did his best as he holds onto his head, writing down notes as the lesson was in session.

As class was finally over, he writes down the homework and lowers his head as he lets out a soft cough. He slowly perks his head up as he heard his last name being called, clearly was expecting that it was probably going to be passing the class or something related to school.

He could hear the students whisper, lower his head a bit as he bites his bottom lip, unsure how to react.

Hearing the bell ring as he looks up at Atari, who just simply pat his back with a smile and then leaves the classroom. Ryuu stands up and grabs his bag, putting the notes in his bag once more as he walked towards the teacher, Mr. Katahira, "h..hi sensei," he rubs the back of his head slowly.

Sakuya looked at the student who greeted him. It was a perfectly normal high school student. If not for the subtle wheeze from his throat, Sakuya would find him perfectly healthy, as compared to his thought about a frail, sick student.

"Why did you bring your bag?" he asked, looking at Ryuu questioningly. "It won't talk too long, I merely want to talk about your schedule and studies," he said sharply, before sighing. "Nevermind. Did you have your lunch there? We could talk while you have your lunch, then. Follow me."

Not bothering to be certain if Ryuu really had his lunch in the bag, Sakuya already turned around.

Unlike science teachers, there were no specific lab for his exclusive usage. However, Sakuya was also a night class homeroom teacher, so he had keys even to the empty labs that was currently not being used. Knowing that the nearby lab room wasn't being used, he unlocked the door and went to the front desk.

The desk was long and lined up neatly, unlike the individual tables in regular classrooms. He put down a chair for Ryuu, then walked around the table and put down another chair across it.

"Sit down. I'd like to ask what do you want to do about your studies," he said. After Atari said that Ryuu couldn't go in yesterday, he could only look at the track record of Ryuu. To his surprise, it was one of those who were really in danger of not graduating this year just based on the attendance. Ryuu's condition could no longer be negotiable because he had gone over the allocated leave in his first two years Morijima high school.

"I saw that you didn't come to the night class. With your condition, do you still wish to graduate this year, or do you want to add an extra semester?" he asked.

Ryuu was expecting this kind of treatment by the other students since he wasn't in school for a good number of months. It's not like he didn't want to but his allergies were a royal pain.

Looking at the teacher as he looks at the bag, "oh.. there was a lot of homework I had to do and I couldn't carry it all in so I put it in a bag.. as well as my lunch for today since I don't do the school lunches." Slowly nodding his head as he followed Mr. Katahira.

He followed him inside the lab and covers his mouth with a cough, sighs and takes his water bottle out of the pocket on his bag and drinks some water.

Watching Mr. Katahira place the chair down and looks at him, slowly nodding his head he sits down on the chair. He lowers his head a little, gripping onto his thigh and slowly glances up at the teacher.

Nodding his head, "I.. do want to graduate. What can I do with my allergies though? I don't want to get people sick or get worst in this kind of environment when my allergies are triggered. That's why I wear a face mask .. everywhere I go."

Sakuya watched as Ryuu drank from his pet bottle. He sounded suffocated, poor guy. Sakuya didn't make a move to cover his own face or anything like that, for fear of alienating the student from himself.

That fear wasn't unfounded, it seemed. Seeing Ryuu gripping his own thigh nervously, even Sakuya wondered if he was that scary for the student. He always preferred being respected in a distant way from the students, but seeing that he was now a homeroom teacher, that was no longer something he could afford to.

At least, for students with special cases like Ryuu, Sakuya realized he couldn't put up a stern, distanced front.

"Don't be nervous," he said, adjusting his sitting position to be more open. Leaning forward, he made sure that Ryuu would feel he was being listened. "I can say on the behalf of our school that we won't pressure you into graduating this year. Actually that's the reason we have the night class, Nakamura. I read the doctor's letter, it said that your condition could only be improved in a long term, so I suppose we could still expect the same amount of absence from you."

Sakuya opened his glasses. It was non prescription glass anyway. "If you still want to graduate with your friends this year, I will personally watch over you and add extra classes when you cannot attend the regular nor the night class. But if you want to take it easy, that's fine by me as well. What do you think?"

Ryuu looks at the teacher and tilts his head, wondering why he wasn't making any move to cover his face. He wasn't one to spread his germs, always coughed in his arm or had his mouth covered with a face mask.

Looking towards the teacher, nervous not about the teacher but more about being able to past. Once allergy season was done, Ryuu was golden to continue the school year but of course the first couple of months were the worst. His allergies only really happen in the Spring time when everything was in bloom but the Summer, Autumn and Winter he didn't have to worry about his allergies much then.

Nodding his head as he starts to loosen up his muscles, looking up at Mr. Katahira. He looks to the side and rubs the back of his head, "so.. even if I have done all the school work, I still won't graduate?" Slowly lowering his head, "uh.. well my allergies only seem to come in the Spring time so once Summer comes, I think it will be better. Also, they don't seem to be as bad at night time."

As he listens to the teacher, he slowly nods his head, "yeah that sounds good Mr. Katahira. Do you think that will really help me graduate as well," he tilts his head to the side.

Sakuya nodded. "...Your school work is the same amount of anyone else's in the school with regular attendance," he said. "It won't replace your absence exceeding the limit. The headmaster hasn't given any exception before this, and he probably won't start giving them now." He sighed.

It wasn't that the headmaster was too strict. This was a private school and the headmaster's family was the founder, funder, and owner of this school. They had their ideals, and discipline in the most accountable standard was one of them.

"Let me tell you what. If you can get the same results as scholarship students this semester, I think the headmaster will be convinced to let you pass," he said. "I assume with the amount of homework you're working on, you're not far behind your classmates, especially since we're still early in the spring, right?"

Ryuu slowly nodding his head, wasn't expecting any special treatments since there were probably plenty of students with allergies but even they fight to come to school. He didn't know what to do at this point, it was a new semester and he had already had so many days off already.

Perking his head up as he looks at Mr. Katahira and nods his head, "so what do I have to do to become a scholarship student so I can pass?" He looks at his bag, "yeah I am not really that far. Atari has been coming to my house weekly to give me notes that I missed while my sister has been getting my homework. I think the only.. think that I wasn't able to do was any quizzes."

Going into his bag and takes out all the homework he owed Mr. Katahira, placing it all on the table. He takes his water bottle again and drinks some water. He wondered what he had to do so he would be able to show up more at school. All he wanted to do was pass, like all the other students.

Sakuya obviously only cared for the students of his own class. He could care less about the students from other class, and the only one who had it so bad that they missed some classes was Ryuu.

"What are these?" he asked as Ryuu took out those books. He could notice that a book was labeled English notebook, but he couldn't figure out why Ryuu pulled them out. "Look, it's lunch time," he said, suddenly moving the subject. "Before anything else, you should eat your lunch, then we'll talk again about your difficulties in quizzes."

Even though Sakuya's main subject was English, he had been working part time as home tutors for graduating high schoolers when he was a university student. High school lessons were still fresh in his mind. After all, even though he was just a simple English teacher in a private school, he had entered and graduated from a highly revered university in the country. Tutoring this one student didn't seem like a hardwork, but did he really want to do that?

While thinking, Sakuya got up and went to open the window's curtain. It was a bright spring day outside. He yawned due to the sleepiness catching up to him, and just being idle, wanting to give Ryuu time to eat his lunch. "You know, I understand your case, but I haven't heard anything about Atari. Did he go to night class only to cover for your studies?" he asked. If yes, he got to applaud the boy. Even Sakuya never had someone as close to him to do something like that.

Ryuu looks at Mr. Katahira and rubs his hand through his hair, as he looks at his teacher, glad he was so understanding. He did have to wonder how is other teachers would react.

Looking down at the books and all the homework, "well... it's what I did while I was out sick. I figured you would want them so show you I've been doing the work." He tilts his head and then looks at the clock, nodding his head, "alright, sounds good."

While Mr. Katahira was in silence, he took out his lunch from his bag and starts eating, resting his chin on his palm as he ate. He ate in silence as he looked over at Mr. Katahira, taking a break from eating so he could drink some of his water.

After eating his lunch and puts the trash into his brown bag he had his lunch in. He looks at Mr. Katahira and tilts his head before slowly nodding his head, "well.. that was half of his reason but his another reason is to caught up on some class work that he missed that he had to make up.

"That boy told you that?" Sakuya asked about Atari to Ryuu again.

There was never a rule in the school about going to night school to catch up some class work. Some teachers might have instructed a student to do so as a punishment, but they never did so involuntarily---especially since Sakuya never remembered a student who missed an assignment save from those who were absent.

He sighed. The redhead, Atari, he might have really done so to help Ryuu, but never told his friend.

As it was none of his business, Sakuya didn't linger on the topic. He already took Ryuu's English book with him and had been flipping around the pages. The writing inside was tidy, but Sakuya could see several mistakes even just from a glance.

"Right, so, about the quiz," he said, walking towards the student's desk again. "To be frank with you, I think it's going to be difficult. I couldn't give you more assignments for extra credits either, as it might overwhelm you instead. Do you hate or love studying? Just be honest."

Ryuu tilts his head and slowly shakes his head, "that is what he said," he rubs the back of his neck.

He wondered if Atari really wanted to just be there at the night class or if he really was there just for him. Whatever the case may be, he was just glad to have a friend like Atari when a lot of people would be happy to have a friend like Atari.

Perking his head up as he watches the teacher look through the text book and even the homework, wondering how good he did. He wasn't expecting it all to be perfect because he was delirious off of medicine at certain points while he was working on his homework.

Watching the teacher walk over to him and rests his chin on his palm, shaking his head, "if ... it will help me pass, I will do anything." He tilts his head and laughs a little, "well.. no one truly likes studying. I guess... it just depends on what subject it is."

Sakuya sighed. Well, Ryuu's answer was supposedly normal. "So what subjects do you hate studying on?" the teacher asked. "If there's not too many, we could arrange an extra studying session. It'll be better if you have a home tutor, though. I recall having them actually helped some students for the university entrance exams," Sakuya said, fixing his glasses.

Ryuu looks at the teacher and rubs his chin a bit as he tried to think what he hate to study. "Hm... oh Math. I don't really.. like math. I am not really good at it." He tilts his head, "a.. home tutor? Hm.. well I am willing to do anything so I can graduate," he scratches the back of his head as he gets up, throwing his garbage into the trash can and walks back over to the desk, sitting down once again.

  • 2 weeks later...

"If it's only math, then I could teach you after your night class," Sakuya said.

Even he couldn't believe that he offered that, what was wrong with him? However, it was true that he was this student's homeroom teacher who would work with Ryuu to get the student to graduate. "Then again, I will keep watch on your improvement in other studies. If they're deemed lacking, I suggest we need to arrange a home tutor for you." Sakuya looked at the student, trying to find a sign of discomfort before saying, "Lunch break is halfway over, see you tonight, Nakamura."
