The water was cold and...in a way chemically different the mermaid unknown to himself couldn't understand where he was from. He was unsure how the fisherman had captured him with such weak nets. But, he knew he wasn’t in his home anymore sighing the merman swam around in circles wishing he could see outside of his tiny tank. After what seemed like hours he felt the room slowly brighten. Wincing from the bright lights Yukie hissed his fins puffing up as his voice hissed“Where am I?”.

 

The mermaid voice was quite muffled by the thick tank walls, but it didn’t stop him from searching suddenly in fear to see if he could get the top lid off. To be honest Yukie was scared to death and was desperate to get away from all the single humans peering eyes that where slowly driving him more into a panic. Unknowing to Yukie...He had just been sold to his new owner and unknown to his owner he had gotten more then he had bargained for with Yukie being more then just a mermaid.

Boring. Uneventful. Predictable. These were the words which most accurately described Sora's life. He was born into a very wealthy family and as a result has always had everything he's ever wanted. This left very little for him to look forward to in his daily life. As a way to stave off the boredom, he would go to various auctions in hopes of finding something that would peak his interests, though nothing ever did.

 

Walking through the doors of the auction house for what seemed like the thousandth time, he let out a long sigh. He was sure he wouldn't find anything again, but still there was some hope so he took a seat in the back. The first to be auctioned off was a painting, then a lion, and after that a rare Chinese vase dating back several hundred years. One after another, rare items and exotic animals were auctioned off, none of them even the slightest bit interesting to Sora.

 

Just as he was about to leave, a fish tank was wheeled out onto the stage and a veil was lifted. Several gasps could be heard throughout the room as people stared in awe. At first people thought it was a trick and that it was a man dressed up to look like a mermaid so no one bid, but the longer they waited, the more they came to realize he had no need to breath oxygen. As soon as people realized they were staring at the genuine article, the bidding shot up incredibly fast.

 

'I must have it.' He thought as he joined in the bidding war. He had never seen anything so mesmerizing. It made him feel as if he could watch the creature all day and still not grow tired of it. Surely he could not let such a creature slip through his grasp.

 

When the bidding finally stopped, Sora was pronounced the winner. He had spent a small fortune, but he didn't care. Quickly he went to pay for his prize. He wanted to bring the mermaid home as soon as possible so he could get a better look at it. "Don't worry," he said to the clearly scared creature. "I will take good care of you."

 

After arranging transportation, he finally brought his new pet home and had him placed in a large fish tank among many other ocean fish. "There now. That's a lot better than the tiny tank you were in before. Do you like it?" he spoke to the mermaid, not really expecting an answer though he did wonder if the creature could understand him.

Yukie glancing around the fish tank puffed up and hissed at the male. He instantly slipping into a small cave his bones easily retracting so he could fit in the tiny little den ment for other fish. Yukie could understand the male and despite his displeasure at being tossed into another strange environment. He had to admit that at least in this tank he could hide easier and the water temperature was warmer then the colder tank he quickly had to adapt to. With a small glare looking at his new captor.

 

Yukie's eyes despite glaring seemed to lightly glow in the darkness showing just a small trace that he hadn't completely camouflaged himself into the tank sand. Slowly calming himself after what seemed like half an hour Yukie slowly slipped out of the cave his body carefully swimming close to the tank floor as he adjusted to the temperature and the color of the smooth rocks his body slowly blending into his environment.

Much to his displeasure, Sora watched as Yukie hid in the cave. He really wanted to be able to see him better. Rather impatiently, he waited and watched for his new pet to emerge from his hiding place. Just when he was thinking about having it removed, the mermaid crept out of the cave.

 

His eyes lit up as he stared intensely into the fish tank. One hand reached up to touch the glass and then another as he pressed his face close. "No don't do that. I want to see you." A small whine escaped his lips as he watched the mermaid camouflage himself with the rocks.

 

Never had anything captured his attention like this had. "Come on, show yourself." He tapped on the glass. "I was nice enough to give you this big tank to swim in. The least you can do is let me see you." He tapped the glass again and again, becoming rather frustrated with his new pet.

Yukie glaring at the sudden tapping puffed up aggressively his spikes becoming almost larger then his body. With a small hiss he tried to scare off the human not wanting to be poked or prodded anymore then he already had. As Yukie continued to puff up and assert his dominance his spikes continued to tower over his body as he pushed the toxic spikes off to try and scare his young master.

Sora glared at the mermaid. Never before had anyone, human or animal, treated him with such arrogant disrespect. "You stop that right now or no supper for you." He demanded as he folded his arms one over the other. "I will not tolerate such insolence." He was clearly unafraid. And why should he be? After all the mermaid was trapped in a tank behind a thick wall of glass.

 

Again he tapped on the glass. He did not realized that the reason his pet was acting this way was because he had been tapping the glass. "I am the master of this house and you will do as I say. Do you understand me?" He stared at his pet, wondering if he really could understand him. The creature looked to be part human after all. Maybe he could understand and was just being stubborn by refusing to talk.

"...stop that fucking tapping...It annoying!" Yukie snapped his voice almost yelling at his new master. Yukie wasn't fond if being in the horrid tank that to him was quite noisy the second the glass was tapped since Yukie was wild and had never been in such an environment. "Please...It echos..." Yukie mumbled his fins slowly calming down while the male backed away from the front of the tank his body changing back to its normal color not feeling the desire to hide anymore since the tank wasn't safe for him to live in. "...humans know nothing of my kind...I would see no reason why you need to feed me when you've already provided food" Yukie mumbled the fish in the tank being more then enough to last him a few months. Yukie's breed was rather endangered being quite hard to find in the ocean since they where thought to be long extinct due to overfishing and hunting.

 

That being said not much was known about their living habits their homes or how they mated, and though it was true the only species documented was male it didn't make them repopulating any different since they mated for life.

It surprised Sora when Yukie suddenly snapped at him. He gasped and took a couple steps back, staring wide eyed at the mermaid for what seemed like the longest time when finally he found his words. "You... so you can talk." A wide grin spread across his face but then turned to a frown. "I'm sorry. I didn't realize the tapping would hurt you. I promise I won't do it anymore so just don't disappear again, ok? And another thing, don't you dare eat any of those fish. They are rare and very expensive. I will have some other fish brought to the house for you. Is there any kind you like in particular? How much do you eat a day? Oh! Can you breathe above water?" he started asking question after question.

 

He moved close once again, this time only pressing a hand against the glass, not tapping. There was so much to learn about his new pet. He had never seen a creature like him and it's not like he could just walk into a pet store asking questions. No one else had ever seen a mermaid either. In fact, most anyone would think he was crazy if he dared talk about his new pet with anyone.

"Decorative fish..." Yukie mumbled annoyed that his new master was keeping such things with a mermaid who was known as a deep water hunting species. Yukie unknowing to his new master had been somewhat human many years ago and because of this he had learned to speak and learned basic human culture until he was driven to the sea by the humans fearing what he was. Mulling over the rush of questions Yukie took his time to answer. "I like sardines...and any living fish...you try to feed me frozen fish and I will refuse it" Yukie added settling down on the sea floor the male resting happily finding his young master to be quite amusing. "I can survive off of three sardines a week. My kind can go without food for long periods of time since we desire dark caves and places where our food doesn't normally venture".

 

"As for breathing above water...well I am a creature of magic your simply seeing me in a form I chose. If needed I could mirror my body to look and smell just like you and live outside the tank like you do" Yukie whispered with a devilish smirk his head resting on his arms seeing as this foolish human posed him no danger.

[StarGazer]

"Sardines huh...." Sora got on the phone and was talking to someone for a minute. "Ok they will be delivered this evening so just wait until then." Tired of standing, he moved over to a chair and sat down, crossing one leg over the other. "Maybe if you are good and prove you can be trusted by not eating my other fish, I will give you some more freedom and allow you out of the tank."

 

"I'm Sora by the way. Do you have a name? I don't want to just keep calling you you all the time." He placed his hands behind his head as he leaned back in the chair and relaxed. He had never felt so content in all his life. Just watching this creature was enough to make forget his boredom. A smile slowly spread across his face as he looked at him.

"My name is Yukie..." Yukie replied amused by the cute bake his master had. "Arent you bored watching me? I mean humans don't have such long attention spans to begin with" Yukie teased slightly wanting to see how much he could poke and bother his master. "But then again...you must be different since you had so much money to burn last night" Yukie added his eyes watching the male in a hunter prey way.

Sora shook his head quickly. "It's not boring watching you at all. I think you're very interesting. I mean, I've never seen anything like you at all. And as for the money, I think you are worth it. Besides, that was just pennies." He waved his hand nonchalantly, not realizing that he was being teased.

 

"But enough about me. Tell me more about yourself. Is there more creatures like you? Do you have a family? How do you reproduce?" He leaned forward in his chair as he awaited a response eagerly, his eyes sparkling. "I want to know everything there is to know about you."

"...I stopped producing others of this species long ago, there was no chance of them surviving" Yukie admitted with a sad smile the male settling down and moving the rocks to make a beautiful nest. "I've never had a family I was created and then lived on my own" Yukie explained having been the result of a cult experiment from back in the day. "As for reproducing...well I can have children and bare others offspring. I can also create my own if desired" Yukie explained settling down in his nest his body rubbing happily against the smooth rocks. "I can change my body to be male and female so having children of a certain species isn't difficult" Yukie added before laying comfortably on his nest looking up lazily at his young master. "I like your choice of rocks...they feel nice against my body" Yukie mumbled his body all soft and slightly pink due to the excess blood flow circulating since he had been massaging his muscles to relax and soften them.

"I'm glad you like it. If there is anything else you would like for the tank, I would be happy to get it for you. Nothing is too expensive for me so feel free to ask for anything." Sora stared as Yukie rubbed against the rocks. He thought the mermaid looked beautiful and was quite envious of him being able to swim freely through the water like that. Try as he might, he was never able to get the hang of swimming. To that day he still needed to use a life jacket if he wished to swim or else he would sink like a rock. "You said you can breath out of water, right? If I go to the top of the tank and open it, would you come up and let me touch your scales? They look so pretty and smooth... I really want to touch them."

"I want a small wade pool area where I can rest against thethe rocks like they have at beaches" Yukie added slightly excited to be able to design his home. " and a cave...I like sleeping in caves" Yukie finished still rolling around a little on the smooth stones as if polishing his scales more. Hearing that his master desired to touch his scales made Yukie hesitate slightly since no human had ever touched him before. "I've never been touched before" Yukie admitted his tail flickering as he laid deep in thought. "Okay, I can do that" Yukie replied gently swimming and waiting at the edge of the water his fins gently grazing the surface. Yukie wondered if his master truly would unlock his tank and touch him the thought of a small sliver of escape being amazing to him.

Sora almost squealed with delight, but managed to to contain his excitement. He went up a staircase to get to the top of the large tank and opened it. "Ok I can get you all those things, but it may take a little while... I will probably have to move you to my large indoor pool." He looked down at Yukie's tail and smiled. "Your tail is so pretty." He leaned over the edge and reached down to touch his tail. For a moment he hesitated with his hand just above the surface of the water. He looked into yukies eyes before finally reaching down to touch it, grinning widely as he did. "This is so amazing. I'm glad you aren't scared of me anymore."

"I could easily drown you if I wanted to" Yukie replied his eyes watching the young master before moving closer almost to the point of being able to drag Sora in. With a small flip of his tail Yukie was suddenly beside the other male his body slightly towering over his prey. "It would be easy to just throw you in...but, where is the fun in that?" Yukie asked more to himself. Studying the human in front of him Yukie was rather surprised by how beautiful his master was up close. Taking a webbed hand Yukie fixed a small piece of hair back to its original place.

 

"You wanted to see and pet me right?" Yukie asked moving his body so he was laying somewhat comfortable outside of the tank.

The complexion on Sora's face paled until he was white as a sheet. The thought of drowning really frightened him because he almost drowned as a child. He was no longer thinking about petting Yukie, but instead his thoughts were filled with the thought of drowning. That suffocating burning feeling as the water entering his lungs, he never wanted to feel that again. He trembled as he sat there completely frozen in fear, too scared to move.

"My guess is you don't like water" Yukie whispered gently touching his master's pale cheek as he sighed. "I won't drown you...I'm not that heartless." Yukie added with a small sad smile. "Come on...either you can float with me in my tank or pet me, I can't stay out to long or it becomes painful in this form" Yukie added poking his master's cheek playfully his tail moving to flick some water on his scared master as if Yukie was trying to get some response from him.

Sora blinked and shook his head when the water was splashed on him. "Y-yeah of course you wouldn't. It's just... I almost drowned once before and it was one of the most painful experiences I've ever had. What you said triggered that memory but I'm fine now." When he said he was fine, it was almost as if he was trying to convince himself more than yukie.

 

To distract himself and change the subject, he began petting Yukie's tail. "Your scales are so smooth and shiny... Do you ever shed them?"

" yes, we shed them once a month since they need to be smooth and clean. When I shed my scales are much smoother and usually very white like sand" Yukie added stretching out on Sora's lap the male liking the attention and petting. "Do you stay in your room all day?" Yukie asked curiously wanting to know a little more about his master since he unknowing to himself was growing a little fond of Sora. "With all your wealth I wouldn't think you would lock yourself away from the world" Yukie mumbled his face burying down into Sora's lap with a soft nuzzle. "Humans are so warm" Yukie softly moaned enjoying any tiny bit of warmth he could steal from the human.

 

"We only travel to warmer waters to give birth and raise our young so warm sand and water is something I haven't been near in a long time" Yukie admitted as his body snuggled and wrapped around Sora more.

Sora was becoming a little cold and his cloths were soaked from the mermaid laying on him, but he didn't care. He was enjoying his company so much that he hardly even noticed. "Well, I go to lots of parties and social gatherings. My father is in politics so he wants me with him at those things. He says it's good for people to see him as a family man, but I don't like them very much. All the people there are very superficial." He sighed. "My father is even trying to marry me off the daughter to one of his benefactors."

 

He hated the idea of an arranged marriage. There was nothing wrong with the girl. She was very pretty and smart, but he just didn't like her in that way and didn't like being forced into anything, especially not marriage.

 

"Other than that I am able to do what I wish with my spare time so I usually go to auctions and such. My family is quite wealthy as you have pointed out. I don't need to get a job. I may some day but right now I've just been looking for something to interest me in this dull life" he tilted his head slightly as he looked down at Yukie. "What about you? What do you like to do all day?"

"I'm sorry he's trying to marry you off." Yukie replied not liking the thought of his master leaving his side for someone else. Puffing up a little Yukie snuggled more into Sora's body. "I don't do much other then survive. Sometimes if I can I like to read and draw" Yukie added with a cute huff finding the question silly for him. "Dont humans get cold being wet like this?" Yukie asked not wanting to head back to the cold water but...It's not like he wanted Sora to freeze to death.

"Well... I might be a little cold, but it's fine. I want to stay like this longer." Instead of the light hint of pink on his fingernails, they had now paled becoming almost white as the blood left his extremities to keep the rest of his body warmer. He knew that he should probably stop petting him, but he enjoyed it so much that he just couldn't bring himself to stop yet.

 

"Are you actually worried about me? Earlier it seemed like you hated me." A shiver came over his whole body. He was feeling quite chilled, but tried not to let Yukie know just how cold he was thinking that he might go back into the tank if he found out.

"...I'm not entirely heartless...I may have been a little aggressive earlier but it's common for my type." Yukie explained stretching out more before laying back down. Yukie could feel his body start to itch from drying out and despite thethe uncomfortableness he didn't want to jump back. "My species is quite aggressive....they like to fight and assert dominance with their partners" Yukie admitted his hand touching down into the cold water. "We are also all male, so adding that into the mix we can be quite deadly" Yukie finished before slowly rolling off of his master's lap and into the water his scales seeming to twitch and realign now that they had moisture making his body shimmer under the water.
