(This is a work of fiction. Not historical fact)

A long time ago when The Aztec’s still roamed their capital Tenochtitlan, Mexico what is now known as Mexico City they believed in deities. One of these ‘deities’ who to the Aztecs were known as a creator deities to them was the Quetzalcoatl. These beings were told have mysterious abilities, and helped the world come into existence. Though regarded highly by the Aztecs, the Quetzalcoatl's were not deities, not in the sense the Aztecs had come to believe. Though the Quetzalcoatl’s did possess powers and abilities unknown to man, they were protectors.

Throughout the centuries of Mesoamerica Quetzalcoatl's have been called upon by the gods and goddesses. They were called upon to protect animals and forests from becoming endangered, they held a connection with the rainforests, and jungles they inhabited. Though no one ever knew they were there, incredible speed made it difficult to even catch a glimpse of the creatures. Their name Quetzalcoatl in the Aztec tongue translates to ‘feathered serpent’. They are told to be a flying serpent, much like a dragon, though few people knew that they could take a human form. Normally only the priests who would care for the Quetzalcoatl who was awake at the time would know of the human form they possessed.

As the years went by, and centuries soon after, it was found that the Priests were coming less and less. Soon they stopped coming altogether, the Quetzalcoatl's did not understand the priests normally came daily just to bring food. What was worse, was they weren’t accustomed to leaving the forests where they lived. Not knowing what else to do, the Quetzalcoatl's put themselves into a deep sleep. A hibernative state, this state should have kept them safe, but one Quetzalcoatl questioned it. This particular one had just recently given birth to baby boy, and she did not want him out in the open if they were attacked if things didn’t go as planned. She carried the baby off, and hid him in a cave that was hidden behind a waterfall in one of the rainforests. Before she left, she put the boy in a deep slumber, hoping that next time he woke it would because he was called upon. The slumber hindered his metabolism, made his aging process slow and allowed his own energy to help sustain him until he woke.

As it were things didn’t quite go as planned, years passed and at first their slumber was not interrupted. It did not stay this way sadly, though with the spell they were helpless and could not defend themselves. They could not sense when the people came into the forest they inhabited, nor could they sense the harm they would inflict. The one who had stashed the child away she was glad she had flown her child to another forest. He was safe, and her paranoia had not been unfounded. Times were changing, and with the times all they had known as well, people cared little for the forests any more. Their race had long been forgotten with the times, because why wouldn’t it? No one would have thought a myth could be real, or even that a creature from such a long time ago could actually be real!

If it hadn’t been for that one Quetzalcoatl who had stopped for a second to think of her son, they wouldn’t be. He to would have perished with the rest of his race, and the Quetzalcoatl's existence would have been truly lost. Thanks to his mother's fast thinking of hiding him someplace different, he survived. Still to this day that lone Quetzalcoatl sleeps, but little did he know his long slumber had come to end.

Markings: Itzcoatl has a tattoo that goes across his right eye. He has various scars from wrestling with some of the creatures in the forest. The worst of which are claw marks going from his shoulders on both sides down his back to disappear under the Maxtl, or loincloth he wore. Though sometimes they would be hidden by the Tilma he wore. Across his right peck their is another set of claw marks, that spans to his upper abdomen. He also has some claw marks on his arms though not as bad, and a set of teeth marks on his his left side, and on his right bicep.

Personality: Unlike most of his species, Itzcoatl has a curiosity about things. He can sometimes tend to be reckless, taking on the larger creatures in the forest to prove himself. His increased strength and speed giving him an edge against all manner of beast. Even though his curiosity sometimes leads him astray, he is still quite timid at times, as most beasts of a forest are. Technology is beyond him, he knows not of computer devices, vehicles and flying apparatuses. Nor has he ever had contact with another besides the animals that reside with him in the forest. Itzcoatl even as curious as he maybe is cautious by nature of things he does not understand, and can also be easily startled. This can cause problems, as he reacts more like a frightened animal, than a reasonable person would.

Weapons carried (if any): Itzcoatl always carries blade he made himself. It’s an Arrowhead dagger, made out of a piece of black obsidian he woke with. He also has made spears but keeps them near the cave, as well as a bow and arrows.

History: Itzcoatl does not remember anything before waking in the forest as young boy. He knows nothing of where he came from, nor does he know what he is. He knows nothing of his birth, or even how he got to where he is. He was like an amnesia victim, though he did know how to speak, but the languages he knew where dead languages. All of which were the languages that the Aztec’s used, though most commonly he speaks Nahuatl. He speaks it so fluent it’s as if it comes naturally, which it does. He also knows many other languages of the Aztecs. This was the only thing he recalled as he was woke from his slumber. All he remembered when he woke was being surrounded by animals, creatures of the forest and one kept nudging him as if to see if he was okay. He didn’t know what had happened, or anything else.

The creatures of the forest took Itzcoatl as their own, though he spent most of that time with the ocelots and the jaguars. The ocelots and jaguars took turns teaching him to hunt and fish, first stalking the prey silently, waiting for the right time, and than going in for the kill. Though he didn’t like it, he knew it was the way of life and it would always happen, but he did thank the gods for every life he took in the process. It seemed every creature helped him learn of the forest in someway. The monkeys helped learn of the use of the vines and how they could be used to go from tree to tree. He than also found out how well they worked to help make weapons and shelter should he ever find himself to far from his cave.

He grew fond of all the creatures in his forest, and the stronger his bond became with them, the stronger his bond became with the forest. Not only with the animals, but with everything that grew and survived in it as well. It wasn’t but a year after he woke that he began speaking telepathically with creatures he became so very fond of so quickly. It caught him quite by surprise though, a cub nudged him motioning for him to come play, but he heard the cub. It wasn’t only motioning for him, it was trying to also speak to him and to his surprise it worked!

He began expanding these newfound abilities, his telepathy grew stronger the more in harmony he became with the forest, and its creatures. The more he learned about the creatures and looked after them protecting all them as they did him. The more abilities began to show, first the telepathy, than the ability to speak back when the animals and creatures spoke to him. Next was the speed, racing with the young jaguars had been what brought that on. One minute he was running side by side with them, the jaguars taking it a bit easy on him, the next he was across an expanse of forest. His hearing, as well as his vision enhanced shortly after, and than the strength. He ended up throwing one of the older jag cubs a ways, and the older cub nearly hit a tree good ways away from where the two had been wrestling.

Though what he wasn’t aware of was just what this connection to the forest meant. He could feel every animal, tree, bird, snake, reptile, it didn’t matter. If it was in his forest and had lived there, he could feel it. It seemed to heighten his own awareness, make everything exciting and new when he heard a new voice and decided to Chase after the creature, even against his “Parents”, as it were, advice. Itzcoatl knew to be cautious, and most of the time he was, curious but cautious nonetheless. Even though he had gained all these abilities, he had also gained a very big weakness. The forest. As it were his connection to the forest, was also a weakness. Every creature, tree, no matter what it Maybe was connected to him and it caused for some problems. If a tree was dying he always seemed to know, if one died he tended to come down Ill. If an animal got hurt he always knew where to find it, and if the animal perished.. It felt like part of him left with departed, he would become depressed. A Day was the shortest period it took him to recover depending, and the longest had been four days. Though recovery may not be the right word for it as he still felt the loss of whatever had perished and guilt over not being able to have helped.

Things went on like this for quite a while, years passed and the young boy grew up. He never left the forest he had come to love so dearly, he could never even think about it. This was his home, his refuge, and he would protect those in the forest with his life. He needed this forest to survive, he didn’t know anything else, nor did he know that if the forest was harmed, as would he be. Itzcoatl spent most nights up in a high branch, humming with birds or playing “tag” with the cubs. It was peaceful, serene and perfect in Itzcoatl’s mind, he loved every second of it. Whether it be swinging from the trees with the monkeys, to running with the felines, or jumping off cliffs into deeper water to swim. It didn’t matter all he knew was he was happy, and couldn’t imagine another way to live. Though little did he know things were about to change for him.

Deep within a rain-forest, where old new Mexico had been, laid an underground cave, within the cave was things that none could imagine. Treasures, jewels that shone like no other, Pearl's, diamonds, anything that one could wish for, laid within the confines of the caves depths. Few had been brave enough to enter, as it was ruins of what was left the Aztecs domain, of old Tenochtitlan, the aztec capital. Some spoke a of curse that the Aztec priests had laid upon the ruins, that kept something, or someone asleep. Some said that disturbing the grounds would wake what laid sleeping, what had been sleeping for centuries, or even longer. Something old, something that should no longer exist in this day in age, though there were others that would just tell those who were curious that it was a tall tale, and it was just that the ruins were dangerous. Far to dangerous for those whom were weak of constitution, and had no sensibilities, about them.

Though, it wasn't a tall tale to keep adventures at bay, as some of those tales were true, even if not many had the mindset to saunter far into the cavern depths, to prove it. All it would take was one brave adventurer to set the story straight, and prove the stories true. However, not one of the storytellers believed the tale about a being that laid asleep, held by a curse, or a spell, of the Aztecs making. Though, it wasn't exactly that the being was being held to his slumber by a spell, more like he was protecting something that laid deep within the confines of the cavern. Albeit, if the object he was protecting was disturbed, other beings would awaken, beings unlike him, ones that would hunt down whomever held the object,in their possession. It wasn’t that the mystical object was cursed, but it held immense power, a magically enhanced gem, that tended to attract all kinds unwanted attention, from those that would misuse its magical properties, and it was not only guarded by the creatures that inhabited the cavern, but an ancient being, that could take many forms if it wished. Though, that wasn’t all that kept guard over the powerful artifact, however they weren’t only there for the protection of the artifact itself, but also the protector that laid in a magically induced slumber. Enormous wolves, that were told be an urban legend laid deep within the depths of the cavern, as well, these wolves were larger than any horse, even the largest warhorse could not compare. They came out when a spelled trap near the mystical Quetzalcoatl's resting place was triggered, the trap being triggered would free the beasts of their den, allowing them to be free of their captivity, to attack those they saw as a threat. Albeit, none had ever ventured so deep as to set off the trap, as most got lost as they ventured deeper, losing their way in the caverns winding tunnels.

Still to this day the mystical artifact sat waiting, safe from those that would abuse its magical properties, as did the protector of the artifact. The quetzalcoatl would lay asleep until he needed to awaken, set free from its confines, the same moment that trap itself was to be triggered, or the artifact was taken from its pedestal. No One honestly knew how deep the cavern actually went, as most spoke of winding tunnels that seemed to have no end, none as of yet, had ever made it to where the mystical Quetzalcoatl laid still sleeping a magical sleep, that had yet to undisturbed. Even if one was to come across the cavern that laid so deep within the confines of the cavern, they wouldn’t see the mythical being who laid there, as his own magic covered him with a mystical veil, that hid him from view, he would only been seen if he wished to be seen. Though, if he was to be awakened, in this new day, and age, no one would even understand the language that he spoke, a dead language that none used any more. It had been so very long ago since he had last been awake, he had been left in this magically induced slumber, when the last of the aztecs had ceased to be, and left to him the artifact, that many had wanted to take possession of, for their own purposes.

It had been, and always would be his purpose to protect the artifact, and so long that it remained safe, he would remain sleeping, as of yet his resting place, that remained covered by a mystically enhanced waterfall. Though, all it was a extremely well made illusion, that kept his cavern, and the artifact that sat upon its pedestal, hidden from view. Many saw what appeared behind as a rocky ending, a deadend, a wall of the cavern, that looked as solid as it appeared, assuming the water that cascaded down was a from some sort of naturally occurring spring, then would turn looking no further into it. However, in truth it was an illusion, though so far it had fooled all that wandered that deep into the caverns depths, and that was how it was supposed to be. It looked real enough, even felt real enough if one were to touch the illusioned wall gently, and look no further into it, though if one were to press, the illusion would fall away, revealing the cavern behind, as well as the artifact, and the treasures that also lay in the cavern. Still to this day none had ever made it past the illusioned wall, the slumbering Quetzalcoatl's magic had conjured, even as he lay in his magically enhanced slumber. Still waiting for the day that he would once again be awakened, to protect what laid in the cavern, to keep the one who managed to awaken the artifact’s powers safe, and to keep the artifacts magic from being used for a wrongful purpose.

As for whomever ended up awakening the sleeping Quetzalcoatl would have his protection, from whatever would come after him. In away they would have control over the Quetzalcoatl, merely by possessing the artifact in question, as it wasn't merely wanted for the mystical properties that it possessed, but what possessing the artifact could bring with it, allow one control over. Truth be told, the Quetzalcoatl had not actually been put into the mystically enhanced rest by the aztecs, but his mother herself. She had placed the artifact on a pedestal within the ruins, laying her son there in his slumber, knowing what he was to do would come to him, naturally. He would wake with the knowledge, and powers to do what was needed, to protect the artifact that could bring about destruction. The artifact that he was bound to protect, by his blood alone, and that was what he would do, if the artifact was ever disturbed.

He had no name. If he did, he wasn't aware of it himself. He had spent many years of his childhood in the slums of cities, running in an odd ratpack of children and thieving his way through life. Or so, he had started off with. As his friends grew older and the services they provided, their specialties started to vary. Some of them remained thieves, some of them became body guards for the others. Some of them conducted favors of the sexual nature while some specialized in something so much more sinister.

Corvo was one of the latter. A man of many vices, but still of a few honors. One thing he had been absolutely terrible at controlling were his sticky fingers. He had a way of stealing (or at least THINKING of stealing) anything that was not bolted down. His kleptomania eventually brought some unwanted attention and hence, he'd ended up here, keeping his head low. Or so you'd assume.

He laid down in a tanning chair and sipped a cocktail he had no idea how to pronounce. It was the life. He gathered looks, for once not because he had heavily offended someone or because he was handsome, but rather for the sharp ears that made him look like an elf, his lanky figure and the few scars and wounds he carried on himself as memories. The tattoos on his body were even less telling, but no less intriguing to some. He didn't care for the given attention, for he was here for something completely different.

The archaeology exhibit. He saw the brochure and decided it worth a look, dressing himself nearly to his nines, if the dark light grey striped suit jacket and trousers could be seen as such. It was less artifacts and more about people blabbing about POSSIBLE treasures. He strolled in with a group of people, only to find himself terribly intrigued when they spoke of an artifact that the Aztecs spoke of, yet it has never been seen. According to the archaeologists, they should be able to get a granted permission to search further into the ruins, "much deeper than ever before!" as the announcer put it. At this, Corvo grinned. He knew he was going to snatch that treasure from in front of these idiots, over two years in advance before these idiots would even get their permit.

And so it all began.

He gathered his equipment, a dictionary of Aztec scripts and did some basic research before he finally settled out to go to the Aztec temple. He hid out in the woods and settled himself comfortable, far away from the actual tourist area. He found some comfort in the form of a stone formation which allowed him a good entry point into a small cave like formation as well as some room to settle a fire in case if he needed one. He spent his day time napping and reading the scripts, getting a grasp of some of the language. During night time, he made progress inside of the temple, little by little, going beyond what the archaeologists so far had been capable of managing.

It took him a few weeks, but by then he already had a very good idea of the layout and he had managed to disband some traps and avoid some more deadly ones. He had found dead ends, swiveled his way out of them and returned before making his way deeper in. It was both boring and exhilarating at the same time. Or it had been, until he started to find beings that seemed to be rather... alive. He used his daggers to slice the flesh and bandages to cover himself whenever necessary. He only took care of his body properly as he waited outside for the next chance to go in. He used iron and the heat of a flame to cauterize his wounds and his blades he kept very sharp. His guns... he hoped he wouldn't have to resort down to using, as they were unnecessarily loud and his ammunition were limited.

And it didn't take him too long until he seemed to finally reach the "core" of this said temple. Or a treasure horde. Or whatever they called it. And on the pedestal he found a... sad old gem. Corvo caressed his hair back, some blood shimmering in his hair. "This is hardly what I was hoping for...", he signed but none the less, pocketed the precious jewel without truly realizing it's potential. Still, just to make sure, he decided to have a peek around the room to make sure he hadn't missed the real treasure this place held.
