Kisaru
Pissed off doesn't even begin to cover how freaking infuriated I am right now. My mother, the lovely woman she is, said that Anime "ruined the world and that people are only so obsessed with it because they know it's inferior". Seriously? The fuck does that mean? We share a desktop. Old computer, for SOME reason, she had it in her mind that sharing a desktop would cut down on the number of computer related problems we've been having. (Such as a random physical memory dump that sometimes fixes itself by restarting the computer.) SO. I have to SHARE my bookmarked sites and such. She noticed YO on the sidebar and called me "sad" for spending my time online at night in a place like this at my age. Apparently a straight woman has no business liking/reading/looking at things dealing with 'gay cartoons'. This. INFURIATES me. Why the hell should I get bitched at for talking about something I love? Same shit happens with anything else I'm interested in, it seems like. Ugh. Does anyone else have a problem with their parents/friends putting anime/yaoi down because they're not interested in it? Please tell me I'm not the only one. :Red_fox5:
RicoTyrell
I can't say the same about my mother, however my father has, more then once called both anime and yaoi stupid, and then went on to insult hentai calling it "not real porn" Although he's never seen the stuff I happen to like
<3Gaara
My mother hates anime, says I waste my time on it and I should be focusing on more important things, and she does not know I like yaoi, I'm to scared of what she'll say about that. Dad doesn't really like anime, but thats cuz most of the ones I have only have subtitles, and he thinks that them having no noses is dodgy, but he's ok with me watching it, I also haven't told him about yaoi, because I don't think he would approve. chiakaiyuki
-sighs- my mother doen't mind manga or anime. She does hate on yaoi, esp real life yaoi. I recently stoped hiding my things, and I still get some annoying comments. Mostly she says that it is 'inappropriate' and 'wrong to be watching'. Whats so wrong with guys liking guys? She doesn't say that about the straight stuff I have. >. The Irish side of my family (that I don't get to speak to often) are generally more open minded and don't give a fuck what I do I wish I could live with them. ^^
bluesakura
I wasn't allowed to watch any type of anime at all when I was a teenager, I used to sneak manga and anime when no one was home or I'd go to the library and watch/read it online there. It sucks, once I went to college, I had an overload of it. Now I like to rub it in my mother's face that I still choose to do it. XD

Kisaru
What pisses me off the most is that my sister, who is a great artist, started out drawing anime and she STILL reads manga. But she's 'grown up' and gotten away from drawing anime-like styles. Ugh. I hate closed minded people.

WindyRain
You're not the only one!! My sister, step-brother, and my very own mother is like that! They say, "anime sucks, anime is dumb", blah, blah, blah. My mom is saying "Those Japanese people only teach you dumb stuff." She said it a very mean way. But haters gonna hate. I completely understand you. People these days
Junjou
I really feel for you guys/gals My mother has never had a problem with me liking Anime, she knows it's something I love and it's harmless. in fact she's even buying me a few anime DVDs for Christmas I'm not into hardcore yaoi but do like watching BL movies, depending on the movie I don't think she'd have a problem with it, but I'd need to come out of the closet before that happens haha xD My dad on the other hand, has never really shown any interest in anime or expressed any positive opinion towards my liking of it. he usually just refers to them as Japanese cartoons, if he ever tries to say any of the names of anime or other Japanese things I watch he will always mispronounce them and then tell me that his pronunciation is right because that's how it's spelled eg "Kamen" pronounced "kah" "men" he to this day pronounces it "Kay" "man" no matter how many times I tell him otherwise. I was once at his house and wanted to watch an anime and he sat with me and watched it because he had nothing better to do, he picked apart every little thing about what we were watching, pointing out how ridiculous or stupid certain things were. needless to say I'm never watching anime with him again. as for Yaoi, well he's a rude unenlightened homophobe so he'd probably disown me for being gay and probably try and take my computer away from me if he found out about my interest in BL
hedge3321
my mum just stays out of it as i tried to explain fullmetal alchemist to her once and it was like showing a dog a card trick my dad is really homophobic not like derogatory it just makes him really uncomfortable but i don't live with him \o/ my sister is seven so her conversion shall soon begin she will succumb to our ways or else
Iwaaant
I don't get too much slack about reading yaoi from my parents though I do get a lot of "How many hours have you been on the computer? Can your eyes even see straight anymore?" I don't expect them to see the value of my entertainment choices, just as their parents probably gave them some slack for whatever they liked when they were younger. I think it's a generational thing. - - - Updated - - - I don't get too much slack about reading yaoi from my parents though I do get a lot of "How many hours have you been on the computer? Gatichan
I understand where you're coming from @ Kisaru and @ Iwaaant. My parents don't pay much attention to what I do, but once when my dad saw me reading a yaoi manga - it wasn't even that bad - he was all akward and uncomfortable- I can only imagine what my mom would say. She'd probably try to understand why the hell I think I need to read such stuff when I'm grown up and actually like guys (I'm a girl). My mom thought some of the manga I read were really cute, but they were all shoujo back then. If she saw me reading this stuff at night or understood what this forum were about, she'd also get on my back that I ought to hang out with real friends more. The problem is that my friends don't like manga! So this forumis a blessing, know what I mean?
