Saga
You want to "affiliate" them,as in,to insert the subtitles on the film itself, or you just want to run the subtitle for you to watch the movie translated? I doubt it's the first one,so I guess,I will answer to the second. First, what program do you use to watch movies? And before anything make sure the subtitle has the same name as the movie.(Just in case) If you have to,rename the file.

Saga
Well, Windows Media Player doesn't support playing SRT. subtitles by default(there are some codecs that can make it possible though). I hope you have put the subtitles and the movie in the same folder. VLC appears to give errors when playing subs. Did you try file -> open file -> use a sub file? You might need to disable the autodetect option from settings. No idea why you have chosen these players, but you can put an end to this by downloading more easier to manage (and less nerve-wracking) programs for playing a movie with translation files. With so little given for information, I might even think that there is a problem in your VLC settings.. As for the other thing I mentioned is to make the subtitles in the movie itself, not to have them in two different files -> avi. & srt. (for example). As for hsplit -> Not sure, but you can't join them probably because the srt. file contains no video data, dear. I don't work with hsplit. And if this isn't helpful and you still need help, please tell me how do you put the files on VLC to run them. EDIT: Just in case,I will explain it: Did you try file -> open file -> use a sub file? Open VLC. Click "Media," "Open File," and then find and click the video. Click "Open." If VLC doesn't display the subtitles, click "Video," and point to "Subtitles Track." Click "Open File." Click the SRT file and click "Open." Return to the "Video" menu. Point to "Subtitles Track," and confirm that the correct track is selected. Click "Tools" if the subtitle still fails to display in VLC media player. Click "Preferences." Click the "All" radio button from beneath the "Show Settings" option. Open "Input/Codecs" and "Subtitles Codecs." Click "Subtitles." Confirm "Formatted Subtitles" and "UTF-8 Subtitles Autodetection" are checked. Click the appropriate subtitle language from the drop-down menu. Click "Save."
