Spotlight: Jaryuu Dokuro

first of all I wanna say, this post is not originaly mine.

Jaryuu Dokuro. I hold her to similar standards as Aniya Yuiji, as they are equally weird, equally dirty and equally fucking brilliant. All you really need to do to know if you’ll like Jaryuu Dokuro or not is go to her pixiv account and ogle the toxically bright colors and pouty lips and insane body postures she has a tendency to post. But for everyone who wants my pointless words instead of pictures, this post is for you.❤

Currently Jaryuu Dokuro has only released those two tankoubon, both under Marble and the last of which was published in 2008, but it’s not rare to see her name on the cover of anthologies and magazines. She currently has a story running in drap, a story running in RuTiLe, a story running in BE x BOY, as well as two unfinished stories under the Marble line’s publisher Tokyo Mangasha. Her first published tankoubon, Sugar Milk, has been licensed in English under DMP’s ‘June’line. The scanlation group Vices and Devices are doing a good job of picking up Jaryuu Dokuro’s unlicensed stories: they’ve done one chapter of Foxy Foxy, one chapter of Butterfly Baby,

I want to say Jaryuu Dokuro’s art style is weird, but at the same time it doesn’t feel odd-looking at all to me. She tends to go the realistic route—men with strong, lean bodies and women with hips that actually have fat on them. Her noses aren’t just a tiny angle down near the mouth, and the way she draws lips is voluptuous and pouty. She doesn’t draw her eyes big and sparkly and moe, but they’re nonetheless incredibly expressive and sometimes even beautiful. Faces and bodies are detailed, as are clothing and backgrounds and pretty much everything else. Her boys’styles are often yankee-ish and fashionable without leaning too much toward the ‘pretty boy’part of the clothing spectrum.

One thing is for-sure: she knows how to draw bodies. Her woman are beautiful as well, but whenever I’m doing a read-through of Endless World I’m always struck by how absolutely stunning her drawings make the male body seem. Especially from the back. Broad, strong shoulders tapering down to slim hips. It’s really wonderful, seriously. I almost wish she’d do another series that would require her to draw naked men so often.

Sex isn’t too detailed but it’s far from vague. Sex scenes don’t last too long and aren’t overly-gratuitous, but Jaryuu Dokuro isn’t a cock-block (no pun intended)—far from it, really. She probably draws the most detailed penises I’ve seen in most BL manga, especially BL manga with a deep and fascinating plot. She draws blow-jobs and riding and pretty much everything else you see during a good H scene. (Though, a warning for all you anti-het bros out there, Jaryuu Dokuro is not afraid of the vag and does sometimes include heterosexual sex.)

Her plots are what really make her great, though, as if her stunning and oddly erotic art wasn’t already enough. She can do cute and sweet (see most of the stories in Sugar Milk) but she can also do stories that are a bit dark and heartbreaking (see Endless World). But she also has an absolutely wonderful sense of humor. Slap-stick isn’t lost on her, but she doesn’t over-do it. She balances sad scenes and happy scenes and stupidly silly scenes with great precision.

Even her most masculine men can cry without it seeming out of character. She knows how to make even the most outrageous of scenes painfully realistic with the ways her characters react and feel. She’s one of the few mangaka who I’d have to say create men who seems mostly masculine, but in a way that I don’t find to be a huge turn-off. They aren’t one-dimensional; like her plots, her characters can be silly and stupid and happy and still know how to cry. She also writes some of the best fucked-up characters I’ve seen in any BL manga. Everyone has their share of personal anguish and baggage.

Of course, that’s not to say all of her stories are incredibly deep and heavy. She can also do soft tasty fluff, and does plenty of it.

As stated before, I recommend Jaryuu Dokuro in the same way I recommend Aniya Yuiji: strong, interesting stories that are sometimes happy and cute, sometimes fucking insane but always, always the best.

(cuz I'm suck at writting, and exprising .. I'll share with u the things that I see on other places!
