Pamela3000
Thank you so much! :leaf3: I wish someone could translate the volumes 4-8 of the manga, can´t find them anywhere in eng Do you know the titles of those volumes (such as Barefoot Waltz, Beginning of the End, etc.)? There's a site that has several volumes scanlated, but they don't seem to be listed in the correct order and there are duplicate scanlations, so I can only i.d. them by the actual titles. Pamela3000
Another random thought about the Takumi-kun films...why do the characters wear street shoes inside the dorm building? Wouldn't it be proper for them to take off their shoes and use slippers instead? This reminds me of something kind of ridiculous that happened to me when I was a young kid and living in Japan. My father was in the U.S. Air Force so my family lived overseas quite a bit when I was growing up. At one point, we were lucky enough to have been stationed in Japan for a few years. I was about 7 and my parents had volunteered me and my brother (around 9 at that time) for a cultural exchange program. Basically, it involved a bunch of us American kids being sent to various towns surrounding the Air Force base and staying with Japanese families for a few days (and our parents getting a break from us...lol!). While staying with the family I was sent to, I was also required to visit a Japanese elementary school...I guess so I could compare what it was like to my own school and so the students could experience a real live gaijin! Anyway, as I entered the building all the kids surrounded me and through the chaos (and language barrier) I somehow managed to grasp that I needed to take off my sneakers and replace them with a pair of the school's flipflops. For some reason, I did not want to remove my knee socks, so I attempted to turn them into makeshift tabi (of course that never really works) by pulling out the end of the socks and wedging it between my toes. The classroom that I was assigned to was located on the second floor (naturally), so there I am, a 7-year-old blonde haired, blue-eyed little foreign girl being pulled up the steps by a hoard of excited kids while those darned thongs kept slipping off my feet! I must have looked like an idiot to those children. They probably thought Americans just didn't know how to wear flipflops! Luckily, I finally reached the classroom and all the students settled into their seats. I had to stand at the back of the room with some adults...I think the principal of the school was there, some other teachers and an American woman from the exchange program. So I waited, nervous as hell (I was a pretty shy kid back then), not sure what was happening, listening to the teacher at the front of the class and the students chattering away, when suddenly the exchange program lady points to the front of the class and tells me I have to write an answer to a math problem on the blackboard. I remember blinking a few times and everyone encouraging me to go to the blackboard. So, shaking like a leaf and staring straight down at the floor, I trudged up to the teacher who handed me a piece of chalk. Thank goodness it was just some simple equation (something like "12 x 0 =")! Of course, I studied it carefully before writing '0' since I didn't want to make a bigger fool out of myself by answering incorrectly. I hurried back to my spot at the back of the room while the students applauded and cheered. Needless to say, I was completely embarrassed by the whole thing. I wonder if any of those kids (now adults) ever think about the day they met a crazy gaijin girl who couldn't wear slippers but was pretty good at math? Wouldn't it be proper for them to take off their shoes and use slippers instead? It totally depends on the school. Most, if not all, public schools do have you change shoes, but one private school I interviewed for a position at didn't. They're at a pretty (originally) ritzy private school, so i imagine they dont have to change their shoes in the dorm or school buildings. Nothing is mentioned, one way or another, in the first three novels, in any case. That said, I've never heard of a school using flip flops. Where were you in Japan? Was it Okinawa? I can see that being a possibility in one of the warmer places.

They were actually tatami zori. ( Please Register/ Sign In, in order to see the links. ) We lived in the Kanto Plains area, more specifically near Tachikawa, Fuchu and Choufu. I have no idea in which town the school was located. It wasn't too nearby since part of the trip involved a bus ride and the shinkansen! This is going back a few years, so maybe it was really common for elementary school kids to use the tatami zori. (Maybe they still do?) I think those rubber-soled slippers Japanese students now have in school are much cooler!
