Summary: Jory Keyes leads a normal life as an architect’s assistant until he is witness to a brutal murder. Though initially saved by police Detective Sam Kage, Jory refuses protective custody—he has a life he loves that he won’t give up no matter who is after him. But Jory’s life is in real jeopardy, especially after he agrees to testify about what he saw.
While dealing with attempts on his life, well-meaning friends who want to see him happy, an overly protective boss, and a slowly unfolding mystery that is much more sinister than he could ever imagine, the young gay man finds himself getting involved with Sam, the conflicted and closeted detective. And though Jory may survive the danger, he may not survive a broken heart.
Post’s Author Opinion:
Note: This is a personal opinion, it does not reflect YaoiOtaku’s official position towards the novel.
I have to admit, a summary to a novel plays a big part in whether I would read the book or not. And based from the summary alone, I had abandoned this series. But without knowing, I stumbled across the final installment of this series and had to come back to start from the beginning because I liked it so much.
The book introduces two main characters that are very opposite in many ways. Jory Keyes is a mass of energy that despite his vulnerabilities and people’s lack of faith in him, has a positive view on life and lives it to the capacity that fulfills him. Then we have Detective Sam Kage, an arrogant, “virile” male who has a black and white view in almost everything. While they are in the chaotic mess that Jory has landed himself in, these two opposites attract but their budding love is put to a test.
What I like about this book is that every situation or reaction comes with a story behind them. Since it is told in Jory’s p.o.v, it helps me understand his character better. You can feel his emotions, reluctance and insecurities throughout the book at the same time see how his character grows little by little. It is the beginning of a long love story yet you can’t help but to want the best for the MCs because crappy things kept being thrown their way. I also love the supporting characters which I normally hate in most books I’ve read.
What stops me from giving it a solid five stars is because I have read almost all of Mary Calmes’ books so I have come to realize that there are some scenes that are similar as the ones in her other books although only slightly. There are also a few “coincidences” too many for a city as big as Chicago where the book is set.
Overall, this is the type of M/M book that I really like. There is romance, suspense, a crime plot that is not too heavy and of course, hot men engaging in meaningful intimacy. It is one of my favorite books, I highly recommend it.
