Post Author’s Opinion:
Note: This is a personal opinion, it does not reflect YaoiOtaku’s official position towards the manga.
Right off the bat, don’t let the title fool you. Mother’s Spirit doesn’t have anything to do with mothers! Rather it’s a cute, sweet, fun manga about a man, Qaltaqa, from an exotic tribe tribe trying to make it in Japan. A teacher, Ryouichirou, winds up housing him and that’s where the silly antics and sweet love begin. What’s particularly special about this story is that Qaltaqa doesn’t speak Japanese. Seeing the two men attempt to communicate through this large language barrier is more than just adorable. This little problem does wonders for the development of their love. Since words don’t necessarily work with them they have to think of other ways to communicate and show that they care. You don’t often see this type of development in a manga, and I think it’s what makes this story stand out. On top of that it ends in a way that isn’t really typical of yaoi manga either. Even though it’s a simple story I find the overall experience of Mother’s Spirit to be fun, sweet, and unique.
