Post’s Author Opinion:
Note: This is a personal opinion, it does not reflect YaoiOtaku’s official position towards the movie.

This being the first Bollywood gay rom-com, the film is already awesome to me. I remember when I was little, watching Indian movies, and how the main characters didn’t even do as much as touch, less alone kiss. And now we have an actual kiss? A gay kiss? Bollywood has come a long way and for that, well done!

Going a bit more objective, this is definitely not the best LGBTQ+ film out there. I didn’t particularly like the characters (I absolutely disliked Aman’s parents), but I like how it brought up discussion about how one doesn’t just choose to be gay, about how it’s really no one’s business who one is dating, and about how heterosexual relationships can be really fucked up and give birth (quite literally) to bigoted and selfish parents who instead of having their kid’s best interest in mind, force their offspring to live according to their own unhappy ideals. Luckily for the main characters there is some character growth so things aren’t so bleak.

In true Bollywood fashion, the movie is quite hyper. Unfortunately, unlike other Bollywood films I watched and liked, it didn’t all quite fall in place. While I appreciate having a fun and joyous approach to the film, maybe this wasn’t the best way for it. Still, I can see why the director and producers went this way, it’s a bit safer and it might reach more people. I have mixed feelings about the approach, but I can’t completely fault it.

The film is a little rushed too, the different issues are not dealt with properly (maybe if there would have been less singing and dancing which I usually like, but here it just didn’t hit right, the timing was off), but I appreciate bringing up and offering a conclusion to most of them. Here I might add I liked Aman’s uncle, he was pretty open and understood really quick in what way he was wrong. Sometimes a short chat goes a long way.

Having all that in mind, pretty good job and I’m actually looking forward to what Bollywood may come up with next.
